Ch. 21A deal, awakening Nen, and mental power

Joey struck a deal with Kite for a safe escape from NGL, money, and Nen training, then learned to control his aura. Kite began explaining Ten and told Joey to focus next on using Nen to run faster and longer.

  • Joey agreed to Kite’s terms in exchange for ten million Jenny instead of a new identity, and Gon and Killua decided to leave with them.
  • Ponzu sent a bee to Joey’s bag while the group headed back toward the village.
  • Kite explained Nen and forced Joey’s aura nodes open, instructing him to sense and control his aura.
  • Joey used the sensation of Wallet injecting aura to bring it under control and envelop himself in Ten.
  • Kite explained Ten’s basic benefits and told Joey to train to run faster and longer with Nen.

Ch. 22Mental strength and life energy

Kite explained which Nen fundamentals Joey needed for the escape and arranged for him to practice Zetsu on horseback while the group rode toward the border. Joey discovered that his exceptional mental strength helped him control his life energy, and he began drawing aura back into his body.

  • Kite explained Ten, Zetsu, and Ren, and told Joey to master Zetsu before relying on Nen while running.
  • Kite assigned Joey to ride with Ponzu and practice Zetsu as the group escorted the translators toward the border.
  • Joey struggled to close his Aura Nodes but found that his aura control was improving rapidly.
  • Joey connected his control to his unusual mental strength and noticed the life energy contained in the aura supplied by Wallet.
  • Joey drew the life energy in his hand back into his body, and Kite noticed that no aura was escaping from his palm.

Ch. 23Zetsu, deduction, danger

Joey completed his first full-body Zetsu training while trying to work out why Kite and Pokkle had become suspicious of him. He suspected Yoshikage Kira’s ability had been exposed and realized he would need to find a way to survive and escape NGL on his own.

  • Joey learned to close his Aura Nodes across his whole body and entered a full state of Zetsu for the first time.
  • Joey reasoned that Kite and Pokkle had recognized his Stand’s destructive ability, possibly because Yoshikage Kira had exposed it outside NGL.
  • Ponzu touched Joey’s injured shoulder, and Joey checked the wound before resuming his Nen training.
  • Kite advised Joey to practice sustaining Zetsu and using Ten on only part of his body.
  • Joey worried that Kite might not let him leave NGL and that Kite could encounter Neferpitou if he ventured deeper.
  • Joey considered searching Yoshikage Kira’s Wallet and Map for information Kite wanted, but could think of no promising clues beyond the identity card.

Ch. 24I have a doctor's note

Joey joked with Ponzu and the others on the ride to the NGL border, then joined Kite, Gon, and Killua in a sprint back toward the villages to investigate. Deena stayed with the monitors to return to the checkpoint and report the crisis inside NGL to the Hunter Association.

  • Joey insisted he was normal while Killua and Ponzu teased him, until Kite warned him to maintain Zetsu and stop talking.
  • The group reached the border after dark, where Joey saw two enormous trees and took blurry photos of them and his companions.
  • Joey reflected on his progress learning Zetsu and used it to conserve stamina while keeping Ten around his legs.
  • Kite, Gon, Killua, and Joey raced back faster than the horses to continue investigating.
  • Deena told the monitors that she would return to the checkpoint and report the major events inside NGL to the Hunter Association.

Ch. 25Pokkle and Ponzu

Pokkle revealed that he suspected Joey had a stamina-restoring treasure and planned to stay in NGL to grow stronger and intercept Joey if he fled, while Ponzu refused to remain. Unaware of their discussion, Joey continued traveling with Kite, Gon, and Killua and struggled to use Nen efficiently as he ran.

  • Pokkle explained that Joey's wanted status, quick recovery, and a glimpse of чужая aura inside his cloth bundle led him to suspect Joey possessed a treasure.
  • Pokkle said he would stay in NGL to train and build credit, and would only attack Joey if he abandoned Kite's task and ran away.
  • Ponzu refused to stay with Pokkle, saying she was too weak for the danger and wanted them both to leave NGL.
  • Joey thought Pokkle posed little threat and continued sensing his aura while running with Kite, Gon, and Killua.
  • Joey asked Gon how to stop wasting Nen, and Gon advised him to incorporate Ten into daily life before questioning whether Joey needed Nen to run at all.

Ch. 26Quantification, Arrival, Map

Joey trained his Nen control while Kite explained aura capacity and recovery, then the group returned to the Organization Base. As they prepared to enter the underground kingdom, Kite discovered a detailed map hidden inside Joey’s bloodstained Map.

  • Joey struggled to maintain Nen while running, and Kite advised him to use Zetsu to recover as he continued moving.
  • Kite estimated Joey’s total aura at around 4,500 and explained how training and Zetsu affected aura release and recovery.
  • Joey warned that something terrible awaited deeper in NGL, and Kite decided the others should leave after reaching the base while he searched farther ahead.
  • The group found human and Chimera Ant corpses near the Organization Base, and Killua gave Joey guns for protection.
  • Joey showed Kite his Identity Card and Map, and Kite tore open the Map to reveal a detailed map of the base hidden inside.

Ch. 27Base Encounter and Assignment

Joey, Kite, Gon, and Killua entered the base and encountered Chimera Ants, prompting Gon and Killua to fight while Kite rescued Gon from a surprise attack. After Joey fired into a cave and more ants emerged, Kite assigned each of them a tunnel to clear, leaving Joey bewildered as the others rushed off.

  • Joey followed Kite and the others into the bloodstained base, where they found evidence of the Chimera Ants’ attack.
  • Kite detected Chimera Ants approaching, and the group saw an ant kill a captive human.
  • Gon charged at the ants, and Kite shot the nurse Chimera Ant before it could stab him; Gon then killed it while Killua attacked the multi-armed ant.
  • Joey fired into a cave, revealing more Chimera Ants, while Kite killed the centaur-like ant and warned Gon and Killua to stay alert.
  • Kite assigned each of them a tunnel to clear, but Gon, Killua, and Kite rushed off before Joey could object.

Ch. 28Cleanup, Gon, and Tracking

Joey and the others cleared the Chimera Ants from the cave, while Joey discovered that Killer Queen could carry his aura as Ten. As they searched the base for documents, Kite realized the group had been detected, and Joey suspected a dragonfly-like Chimera Ant was tracking them.

  • Joey used the Skeleton Chariot and Killer Queen to defeat the Chimera Ants in the cave, then noticed that Killer Queen could hold a layer of his aura as Ten.
  • Gon and Killua returned to the main chamber, and Joey warned them that stronger Chimera Ants might awaken Nen.
  • Kite said the Chimera Ants could become a regional threat if they were not eliminated before their strength grew.
  • Kite noticed that their movements had been exposed, and Gon suggested testing how precisely the Chimera Ants could detect them.
  • Joey suspected a dragonfly-like Chimera Ant was tracking the group, but Kite opened a concealed door leading to the documents he sought.

Ch. 29His First One-on-One Melee Fight

Joey joined Gon and Killua as they confronted the Chimera Ants pursuing them through the base, then asked to fight one at close range to train. He faced a fast horse-headed Chimera Ant, but the chapter ended before their first exchange.

  • Kite told Killua, Gon, and Joey to handle the approaching Chimera Ants while he gathered important documents from the Archive.
  • Killua killed a shrimp-shaped Chimera Ant, and Joey shot its body to make sure it was dead.
  • Joey decided to test his close-combat skills against the approaching ants while Killer Queen supported him.
  • Killua and Gon agreed to let Joey take on the first opponent and discussed his awkward fighting stance and Nen ability.
  • A horse-headed Chimera Ant charged Joey, who watched its movements and prepared to respond.

Ch. 30Who Are You, Really?

Joey, Gon, Killua, and Kite defeated the Chimera Ants in the cave and escaped before the powder magazine could become a danger. On the way out, Kite questioned Joey about details that suggested he knew about Joey’s unusual power and identity, leaving Joey stunned.

  • Joey used Killer Queen and First Bomb to destroy a Horse-Head Chimera Ant and a Bird-Type Chimera Ant.
  • Gon subdued a Pangolin Chimera Ant, while Killua killed two others attempting to flee.
  • Kite warned the group about the powder magazine, and the four escaped the base with the information case and Kite’s strange longsword.
  • Kite explained the group’s Nen abilities and categories as they headed away from the cave.
  • Kite asked Joey about a special piece of leather, its soul, and an insect, then asked whether he was Yoshikage Kira, Joey, or someone else.

Ch. 31Questions and Concealment

Joey concealed parts of his past while answering Kite’s questions about Yoshikage Kira, the strange bug, and the Wallet. Kite returned the Wallet and began explaining his conclusions and the inconsistencies he had noticed.

  • Joey told Kite his name and claimed he had awakened with Yoshikage Kira’s identity, while hiding what he knew about Kira.
  • Kite asked to inspect the Wallet and hear Joey’s description of the ugly bug, and Joey handed it over and described it.
  • Gon and Killua examined the Wallet with Nen and sensed that its creator had imbued it with vitality.
  • Joey told Kite he had been asleep at home in East Gorteau before the bug’s cry woke him in his new body.
  • Kite returned the Wallet and began explaining his conclusions and the inconsistencies in Joey’s account.

Ch. 32[Ming] Vows and Limitations

Kite explained that Ming was a soul-feeding insect from the New Continent Travelogue, and that its death left life-filled Nen on the wallet Joey had absorbed. He also described vows and limitations and revealed that he had tested Joey after suspecting he was no longer Yoshikage Kira.

  • Kite identified Ming as a Dark Continent insect that dragged Joey's soul into Yoshikage Kira's body when threatened.
  • Kite explained that Ming's lingering resentment could be tied to its ability's vows and limitations, though the wallet's effects remained unknown.
  • Kite described vows and limitations as rules that trade restrictions for greater power, and said Joey would need to learn more about his Nen Beast himself.
  • Kite said no human was known to have survived Ming's attack and that other affected species had been quarantined.
  • Kite explained that Joey's behavior, weak combat skills, powerful soul, and unfamiliarity with NGL led him to suspect Joey was not Yoshikage Kira.
  • Kite revealed that he had begun testing Joey after Joey showed his ability, leaving Gon and Killua bewildered.

Ch. 33Two choices × Death Waltz

Joey chose to become Kite’s student in exchange for protection and a chance to build a peaceful life, while Kite prepared to get him out of NGL. When Chimera Ants surrounded them, Kite unleashed his scythe’s sole move, Death Waltz, and cut down the enemies around them.

  • Kite offered Joey a choice between staying under his guidance to earn a Hunter License and returning to East Gorteau, and Joey chose to become his student.
  • Kite told Joey to return toward the checkpoint with Gon and Killua, gave Gon a briefcase for Deena, and said his companions would arrange Joey’s escape and a new identity.
  • Kite spotted a Chimera Ant watching from above as a large group of ants blocked their route and challenged them to choose how they would die.
  • Kite ordered Joey, Gon, and Killua to jump in three seconds, then vanished in a flash and severed the Chimera Ants and trees across a wide area with Death Waltz.

Ch. 34A Terrifying, Evil Aura

Kite, Gon, Killua, and Joey encountered a monstrous crocodile Chimera Ant wrapped in a terrifying aura, which had apparently returned despite being killed. Their attacks failed to stop it, and it continued pursuing Joey as Kite searched for a way to strike without hitting him.

  • Kite warned Gon that sympathizing with Chimera Ants could make future battles difficult, and Joey asked whether Gon could kill ants that valued life and their companions.
  • Kite sensed a powerful evil aura and ordered the others to run as a giant crocodile Chimera Ant charged at Joey.
  • Kite was knocked aside, while Joey's bullet and Killer Queen's explosion diverted the crocodile's charge and helped Joey escape.
  • Killua struck the crocodile with lightning, and Gon attacked its head before its tail sent him flying.
  • Killer Queen's Skeleton Chariot exploded twice, while Kite shot a hole through the crocodile's head, but the creature kept moving toward Joey.
  • Kite changed Crazy Slots into a hand cannon, but he could not fire because Joey was too close to the crocodile.

Ch. 35A severed arm and a severed hand

Kite fought Neferpitou while Killua and Joey fled with Gon, and Joey severed his own hand to stop damage from spreading through the Skeleton Chariot. After a massive explosion at the base, Killua reached the checkpoint for help while Joey waited nearby, uncertain whether he could recover his hand.

  • Killua rescued Joey from the crocodile's explosion, and Kite attacked as the Skeleton Chariot charged into the blast.
  • Neferpitou appeared, Kite lost his left arm, and Killua knocked Gon unconscious before carrying him away.
  • When the Skeleton Chariot's damage caused blood to burst from Joey's hand, Joey used Killer Queen to sever his wrist and bandage the wound.
  • Joey and Killua fled toward the checkpoint as explosions continued behind them, then saw the sky turn red after Kite apparently detonated the base's ammunition depot.
  • Killua continued to the checkpoint to bring help while Joey stopped near a rocky hill and resolved to regain control of his severed hand.

Ch. 36Joey's Request

Joey slept while Killua met Netero, Morel, and Knov and told them about the Chimera Ant threat, Kite’s records, and Joey’s identity. The Hunters set off to confront the enemy, leaving Killua and Gon to prove themselves, while Morel promised Joey he would bring Kite back if he was alive.

  • Joey hid among the rocks, exhausted and in pain, as Nen from the Wallet soothed him into a restless sleep.
  • Killua met Netero, Morel, and Knov and warned them that Neferpitou’s aura and strength surpassed any opponent he had faced.
  • Killua handed Netero the case of records Kite had taken from the Narcotics Organization and explained Joey’s past and whereabouts.
  • Netero returned the case for Kite’s companions and told Killua to bring Joey back, while challenging Killua and Gon to defeat two assassins if they wanted to follow the Hunters.
  • Joey woke to find the Hunters beside him, pleaded with them to rescue Kite, and received Morel’s promise to bring Kite back if he was alive.

Ch. 37[Prisoner's Single Room]

Joey was rescued from NGL by Andrei and brought to Kite’s companions, where Banana began treating his missing hand. He learned that the hand could not be reattached and listened as Andrei prepared to explain the situation.

  • Joey reflected that he needed Kite’s guidance to earn credit and survive the coming Chimera Ant crisis.
  • A day later, Andrei, Ditte, and Lapoy found Joey in NGL, and Andrei used Prisoner's Single Room to transport him outside the country.
  • Joey emerged from the room hours later and met Kite’s companions, including Shiping, Stick, Bondo, Vantine, Rin, and Banana.
  • Bondo examined Joey’s severed hand and judged it too damaged to reattach, while Joey asked him to cremate it.
  • Banana stepped forward to treat Joey, and Andrei began explaining the current situation.

Ch. 38Exposure, Disguise, and Contact

After Pokkle leaked Joey’s identity as the Murderer, Andrei helped Joey disguise himself while Killua and Gon prepared to return to NGL and search for Kite. At the train station, they met their contact, Palm Siberia, who invited them to tea to explain the conditions for returning.

  • Andrei told Joey that Pokkle had revealed his identity as the Murderer and his suspected stamina-restoring treasure, putting him at risk from Bounty Hunters and Crime Hunters.
  • Andrei offered Joey a hiding place, and Killua suggested Joey stay with Gon and him; Gon proposed disguising Joey.
  • Joey cleaned up, cut his hair, and dressed as a refined professional, openly displaying his missing left hand as a distinguishing feature.
  • Andrei gave Joey directions to the [Prisoner's Single Room] and left, while Joey went with Gon and Killua toward the train station.
  • At the station, Killua and Gon found their contact's mark erased and met Palm Siberia, who invited them to tea to explain how they could return to NGL.

Ch. 39Palm, Water Divination, and Emission

Joey, Gon, and Killua met Palm, who explained that she had to defeat Knuckle and Shoot to join their mission. Killua helped Joey test his Nen category, and the chapter ended with Joey preparing to investigate whether his Nen could help restore his severed hand.

  • Joey, Gon, and Killua met Palm at a café, where Palm revealed that she was Knov’s student and had insisted on joining the mission.
  • Palm said the condition for her participation was that she defeat Knuckle and Shoot, then released aura that caused the tea in her cup to overflow.
  • Killua used Water Divination to test Joey’s Nen, and the water turned blue, identifying Joey as an emitter.
  • Gon and Killua discussed how Joey’s category fit a personality-based Nen theory, while Joey defended himself and Kite.
  • Joey returned to the mission’s purpose and kept the glass out, intending to test whether his Nen could restore his severed hand.

Ch. 40Specialization and Gold Experience

Joey discovered that the Wallet’s aura could make a leaf grow roots and considered developing a life-giving Specialization ability like Gold Experience to replace his missing hand. After absorbing the Wallet’s Nen in private, he depleted it, and the Wallet bit his hand with a newly appeared mouth.

  • Palm told Joey, Gon, and Killua that Knuckle and Shoot were Morel’s students and that the one-month deadline would send either them or the boys to NGL.
  • Joey tested the Wallet’s aura on a leaf, saw it grow roots, and considered using its life force to develop Gold Experience and create a replacement hand.
  • Joey, Palm, Gon, and Killua went to Knov’s villa, where Gon and Killua settled in before leaving to gather information about Knuckle and Shoot.
  • Joey returned to his room and absorbed the Wallet’s Nen alone, steadily thinning its aura over two days.
  • Joey absorbed the Wallet’s remaining Nen, and the Wallet stuck to his hand as a black mouth full of sharp teeth appeared and bit him.
