Background / History
Childhood and Search for a Master
Sanosuke's father died in war while he was very young, and human traffickers subsequently abducted his mother. The villagers blamed him for the misfortune affecting their home and wanted him expelled. An elderly ninja who had taught his father took him in and became his teacher 5.
His teacher told him of a disaster-bringing man whose misfortune had supposedly been suppressed through service to a wise king. Sanosuke consequently sought a master capable of overcoming his own bad luck. Over twenty years, he served eight masters who all died, with Redbeard being the eighth 5.
Entering Norton's Service
During Redbeard's attack on a pleasure ship, Sanosuke attempted to stab Norton from behind. His kunai failed to pierce Norton's body, and his sensitivity to danger left him unable to attack again. Recognizing the threat, he warned Redbeard to flee 1 2.
After Redbeard's defeat, Norton offered Sanosuke a place as his subordinate. Sanosuke accepted with a ninja's rite of allegiance, making Norton his ninth master. Norton later welcomed the challenge of suppressing his misfortune; following the Sea King ordeal, Sanosuke accepted him wholeheartedly and began addressing him as his lord 3 5 7.
At the duke's castle, Sanosuke killed a former Redbeard pirate for harassing the maids. When Norton ordered resentful pirates delivered to a Marine Base, Sanosuke secretly intercepted their escort, knocked the guards unconscious, and killed every prisoner. He considered eliminating even weak potential enemies part of his duty to Norton, then concealed his absence with a claim of constipation 10.
East Blue Battles and Rivalry with Zoro
While hunting meat for Norton, Sanosuke tried to claim a giant tiger Zoro had killed. Their dispute became a prolonged duel. Sanosuke controlled much of the fight through stealth, but a breaking branch exposed him to an Oni Giri that wounded his chest. Norton intervened before either fighter won and subsequently recruited Zoro 17 18.
Sanosuke later fought Arlong alongside Zoro, intercepted Kuro aboard the White Pearl, and overcame Don Krieg by secretly laying a steel-wire trap across the deck. Norton ultimately killed the restrained Krieg 21 25 35.
Zoro's subsequent growth left Sanosuke behind, and Zoro defeated him swiftly when Sanosuke tried to prevent another challenge to Norton. Sanosuke then accepted Norton's Devil Fruit. In their rematch, his Ink Crow transformation allowed him to fight Zoro to a standstill, briefly gaining leverage before Norton stopped them 46 47.
Grand Line Service
Sanosuke's flight made him useful for carrying orders between ships and locating potential intelligence specialists. He also enforced Norton's rules ashore, overseeing patrols that prohibited looting, civilian harassment, and conflict with locals 49 66.
His combat assignments included defeating and capturing Dalton, guarding Norton's cabin against Mr. 1, and ambushing “Big Saw” Atmos during the takeover of Mock Town. Against Borsalino, however, his fastest response failed: a light beam warped his weapons, tore open his arms, and hurled him into a collapsing wall 58 61 68 72.
During the later monster-island expedition, thousands of bloodsucking creatures forced Sanosuke's squad to retreat. After the officers began operating alone, he scattered a bloodsucking insect colony by killing its queen 108 109.
War and New World Expansion
On the frozen battlefield against the Marines, Sanosuke flew overhead to assess the fighting and rescue endangered pirates. He confronted Vice Admiral “Iron Fist” Howard to protect three defeated captains, using his greater speed against Howard's heavy Armament Haki-coated punches. The exchanges repeatedly numbed and injured his hands, but he refused to withdraw 122.
During the Norton Kingdom's expansion, Sanosuke encountered Katakuri and returned seriously injured. When Big Mom proposed a marriage alliance with Norton, Norton's reply instead put Sanosuke forward as the prospective groom 129 130.
Big Mom later brought Pudding to Demon King Island and proposed that she and Sanosuke meet, with marriage conditional on their getting along. No completed marriage is established. During the subsequent fighting at Big Mom's gathering, Sanosuke wounded a Charlotte son who attempted to ambush Norton and watched Katakuri closely for an opening 133 135.
Appearance
- Ninja clothing: A black stealth outfit, silver forehead protector, and face covering that initially leaves only his eyes exposed 1 4 17.
- Unmasked expression: Reveals a largely expressionless face when lowering his mask to meet Big Mom and Pudding 133.
- Scar: Has an old, pale kunai scar on the back of one hand 85.
- Ink Crow transformation: Develops black feathers, wings, claws, and crimson eyes with slit pupils. His feathers can show a deep-blue gleam in sunlight 47 64.
Personality
Sanosuke treats loyalty as a professional obligation. His teacher's ideal of a ninja as his lord's hidden blade shapes his willingness to kill possible threats without being ordered. Norton's overwhelming strength sometimes makes him feel unnecessary, but he still insists on guarding him and those close to him 10 18 25 68.
In combat, he is patient, controlled, and difficult to provoke. He favors ambushes, feints, and mission completion over direct contests of strength, dismissing the idea that a ninja should fight head-on 17 18 35.
He trains daily and initially wants to preserve his position as the strongest person aboard after Norton—not second in command. Zoro's rapid improvement intensifies this drive, pushing him toward both the Devil Fruit and further training under Steel Hand 16 46 47 85.
Despite his severity, he can be quietly considerate. When Chopper timidly complimented his wings, Sanosuke reassured him and gave him a feather 64.
Abilities & Skills
Stealth and Assassination
Sanosuke uses darkness, silent movement, and precise attacks to control the pace of a fight 17 18.
- Can disappear into forest shadows and attack from unexpected directions, including above an opponent 17.
- Combines thrown kunai with close-range blade work aimed at vital points, joints, and ligaments 17 58.
- Possesses a keen sense of danger, recognizing Norton's threat before most people understood his strength 2 3.
- His concealment is less effective in well-lit surroundings; Norton attributed his initial edge over Zoro partly to the dark forest 18.
Movement Techniques
Sanosuke's agility supports evasive fighting, pursuit, and rapid repositioning 21 35.
- Flash Step: Changes direction abruptly while moving off a surface, allowing him to evade Arlong's sweeping attacks and close in again 21.
- Ninja Art: Body Flicker Technique: Blurs his figure and shifts him five meters during Don Krieg's shotgun attack; the spread still grazes him 35.
- Can climb and maneuver along walls, trunks, rooftops, and ship rigging 7 17 21 35.
Ninja Arts and Traps
His techniques rely on tools, timing, and deception rather than straightforward force 35.
- Shadow Fang Triple Flash: Holds a kunai in each hand and his ninja sword between his teeth, striking from three directions in imitation of Zoro's stance 18.
- Ninja Art: Smoke Screen Technique: Uses a smoke bomb to conceal his movement and reposition 35.
- Ninja Art: Earth Spider: Activates concealed steel wires beneath the deck to bind an opponent. Against Krieg, the wires caught gaps in his armor and tightened as he struggled 35.
- Heavy armor and powerful weapons can frustrate his direct attacks, forcing him to rely on traps or openings 21 34 35 68.
Bird-Bird Fruit, Ink Crow Form
The Zoan transformation increases Sanosuke's strength, speed, and defensive ability while adding aerial movement and feather-based attacks 47.
- Flight: Travels rapidly between ships, attacks from above, and surveys battlefields from the air 49 122.
- Wing defense: Uses dense feathers and wing bones to catch or block sword strikes, though Zoro's blades can cut into them 47.
- Ink Feathers: Scatter: Fires razor-edged feathers at close range 47.
- Ink Crow Secret Technique: Feather Blade Storm: Forms two intersecting feather whirlwinds covering almost half the deck 47.
- Crow Feather: Chaos: Directs feathers toward an enemy's joints; against Mr. 1, lodged feathers briefly stalled his transformations 68.
- Ninja Kill: Crow Beak: Spins downward with twin blades in a drilling attack 68.
- Limitations: Eating the fruit removes his ability to swim. Its physical boost does not prevent stronger opponents such as Borsalino and Katakuri from seriously injuring him 47 61 129.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kunai: Used for thrown attacks, close combat, parrying, and precision strikes 17 25 122.
- Ninja Sword: His principal blade, combined with kunai and later his Zoan abilities 18 47 68.
- Shuriken: Thrown weapons that failed to penetrate Don Krieg's armor 34.
- Smoke bombs: Conceal attacks and repositioning 21 35.
- Steel wires: Fine, durable wires used in the Earth Spider trap 35.
- Ninja tool pouch: Carries his sword and kunai during his first transformed duel with Zoro 47.

- Steel Hand — Instructor responsible for training the officers in Armament Haki's Ryuo 84 85.
- Chopper — Crewmate whom Sanosuke reassures and befriends, giving him a black feather after he admires his wings 64.

- Charlotte Katakuri — Powerful opponent who seriously injures Sanosuke during territorial expansion. Sanosuke remains wary of him during the later free-for-all 129 135.
