Background / History

Arrival and the Ackerman Household

Arthur came from another world under the name Gu Shun. Kane rescued him from wolves and took him into his household, where he became an older-brother figure to Mikasa. When registering his residency, he chose the name Arthur because his original name felt out of place and adopted the family surname Ackerman 3 7.

Wanting to contribute rather than depend entirely on the family, Arthur asked Kane to teach him hunting. He quickly surpassed Kane in archery, tracking, and endurance, and their increased catches provided additional income. For Mikasa’s eighth birthday, Arthur bought her a bracelet and a custom-made red scarf 4 5.

Through Grisha Yeager, Arthur befriended Eren, who later introduced him and Mikasa to Armin. Arthur also borrowed medical books from Grisha after noticing signs that Yumiko was ill 6 8.

Murder of Kane and Yumiko

In spring 844, attackers entered the Ackerman home and killed Kane. Arthur killed two assailants and fought the others despite being shot, while Yumiko died after intervening to save him. Mikasa awakened extraordinary strength and killed the man strangling Arthur 8 9 10.

Arthur briefly appeared to have neither breath nor a heartbeat before recovering. Blaming himself for failing to save Kane and Yumiko, he promised to protect Mikasa for the rest of his life. He then helped dispose of the attackers’ bodies and prepared to bury the couple 10 11 12.

Refugee Life and Enlistment

Arthur is affectionate and protective toward those he considers family. He supports the Ackermans through hunting, studies medicine in hopes of helping Yumiko, and assumes responsibility for feeding his companions after Wall Maria falls. His guilt over Kane and Yumiko’s deaths reinforces his determination not to lose another family member 5 8 11 20.

His patience has a sharp boundary. He advocates restraint until someone crosses a personal limit, then decisive retaliation. This can become excessive: after dislocating Annie’s arm during a training match, he admits that he may have gone too far 19 27.

As a leader, Arthur combines confidence with practical judgment. He credits his fellow recruits for Christa’s rescue and understands that a successful plan depends on cooperation. In government, he favors gradual reform and securing resources that will prevent Historia from becoming a powerless figurehead 32 116.

His supernatural abilities increasingly threaten his self-control. Arthur fears becoming a remorseless killer and conceals some symptoms to avoid worrying Mikasa.
