"You're the Devil Hunter named Asaba Kotone, aren't you? What brings you to our school so suddenly?"
The principal sounded both surprised and puzzled.
Asaba Kotone was a little taken aback. His reputation had grown so much that even the principal before him recognized him.
"I'd like to experience school life. I can take the entrance exam like anyone else, but I might not stay here for very long. While I'm here, I'll handle security on campus. If a devil appears, I'll deal with it right away."
Asaba Kotone stated his intentions plainly.
The principal looked momentarily bewildered. He hadn't expected this young prodigy to have come here to attend school.
He guessed that Asaba Kotone might have skipped high school to become a Devil Hunter and now wanted to experience high school life.
"Then let's arrange an assessment for you first."
The principal stood up and rummaged through the cabinets behind him.
Before long, he found a test paper. It didn't look like a dedicated entrance exam, but rather an ordinary comprehensive test covering only Japanese, mathematics, and English.
He was really just a little curious about Asaba Kotone's academic ability, so he had chosen a fairly easy paper. Even if Asaba Kotone's final score wasn't ideal, he would still let him enroll.
Although that would go against the regulations, rules were rigid, while people could be flexible. The boy's status as a Devil Hunter and his outstanding achievements were reason enough.
Besides, he would protect the students on campus from devils. That was undoubtedly a tremendous benefit.
Asaba Kotone took the paper and gave it a quick glance, immediately noticing how easy it was. He said nothing about that and began answering the questions.
He finished the test with ease, then checked it over once more. It wasn't really necessary, but he wanted to take it seriously.
Only after confirming that everything was in order did he hand the paper to the principal.
"You finished already?"
That rather surprised the principal. Normally, this test allowed an hour and a half, but Asaba Kotone had finished it in just over half an hour.
He immediately put on his reading glasses and began marking the paper against the answer key with a serious expression.
The further he got, the more astonished he looked.
He couldn't find a single wrong answer, right through to the final question. It was a perfect score...
The principal's eyes widened in shock, disbelief flickering in them.
He had assumed Asaba Kotone wouldn't have much of an academic background, but the result far exceeded his expectations.
How could such a powerful Devil Hunter also have such strong academic skills?!
Although he didn't know much about Devil Hunters, he understood that such a dangerous profession made it difficult to settle down and focus on anything, especially studying.
That made Asaba Kotone's case seem utterly incredible to him.
The principal slowly set down his marking pen and looked at Asaba Kotone with admiration. "A perfect score! Excellent! However, the school term has already been underway for a while, so you'll need to join a class as either a midterm entrant or a transfer student. Would you like to learn about the different classes first?"
"Then could you please show me the class lists? Sorry for the trouble."
The principal promptly handed Asaba Kotone the lists for every class.
Asaba Kotone skimmed them all and found Kobeni Higashiyama in Second-Year Class 1. "This one, then. Second-Year Class 1."
"Second-Year Class 1, is it? Class 1 is our advanced class. I'll have a word with its teachers."
The principal explained.
"All right."
Asaba Kotone more or less understood what the principal meant.
The advanced class was essentially the equivalent of the elite classes in the high schools back in his home country in his previous life.
The regular, college-preparatory, and advanced classes corresponded to the regular, experimental, and elite classes back home in his previous life. Only the names were different.
An advanced class was bound to move at a fast pace and demand a lot from its students. The principal was probably worried he might struggle to keep up and get lectured by the teachers, so he wanted to explain things to them beforehand.
His learning ability would certainly let him manage an advanced class without any trouble, but he didn't say anything more to the principal.
Come to think of it, if Class 1, where Kobeni Higashiyama studied, was an advanced class, that meant she had very good grades.
Yet Kobeni's family wouldn't let her go on to university, wasting all that academic potential.
"As for your status, either a midterm entrant or a transfer student will do. You can choose whichever you like."
"A transfer student, then."
Perhaps because he had watched so much Japanese anime in his previous life, Asaba Kotone preferred being a transfer student to being a midterm entrant.
"All right. I'll get your textbooks, uniform, and so on ready today. You can officially start school tomorrow morning. Wait here for now."
With that, the principal went to make a phone call.
The process was considerably simpler than Asaba Kotone had imagined. The principal hadn't asked for his ID or his school records and had readily agreed to everything.
Of course, he did have an ID. Both his name and his ID had come with him when he crossed into this world. It hadn't been just his soul, either; his entire body had come over.
After that, Asaba Kotone sat in the principal's office and had tea with him.
"Have you attended high school before?"
The principal brewed the tea himself and poured Asaba Kotone a cup. He seemed less like he was dealing with a student and more like he was entertaining a guest.
"Yes. You could say I temporarily dropped out to become a Devil Hunter."
There wasn't really anything wrong with Asaba Kotone's answer. He had been a high school student before crossing over, then had become a Devil Hunter afterward. He probably wouldn't be able to return to his original world to continue school, which was much the same as dropping out.
"No wonder your academic foundation is so solid. But why do you only plan to study here for a while? Do you intend to focus on being a Devil Hunter afterward?"
"Yeah..."
Asaba Kotone gave a casual answer. After all, he couldn't reveal the truth.
"That's good, too. It's a noble ambition."
Asaba Kotone now counted as one of his students. As principal, he actually hoped that Asaba Kotone would lead a normal life at school and hunt devils only occasionally, rather than face such danger every day.
But that was only his own hope. He would certainly respect Asaba Kotone's wishes.
Asaba Kotone and the principal chatted over tea for quite a while, until someone brought over the textbooks, uniform, and other supplies.
The principal still had other arrangements to make, while Asaba Kotone took those things home.
