Chapter 38: Juzo Megure was ready to apologize (4/4)
In the corridors of the Metropolitan Police Department, Wataru Takagi felt as though every colleague they passed was looking at him with a hint of pity.
So why did this end with us having to report in person...? Takagi swallowed and, feeling rather uneasy, spoke to Miwako Sato, his secret crush, who was walking just ahead of him:
"Inspector Sato, I'm a little worried. What exactly is this SdS?"
"I don't know."
Walking ahead of him, Miwako Sato glanced at the anxious Takagi, then said without turning back:
"I don't know the details either. Apparently, only personnel ranked inspector and above are notified about that department."
"Inspector and above?" Takagi, a sergeant, immediately felt a little envious.
Since he had not joined the Metropolitan Police Department through Japan's Category I examination, it would take him at least five or six years to become an inspector, and he would have to pass both the assistant inspector and inspector examinations along the way.
He was already twenty-six. By the time he became an inspector, he would be at least thirty-two.
Miwako Sato, who was also on the non-career track, was twenty-eight this year. She had only become an assistant inspector less than two years ago and would have to wait another three before she was eligible to sit the inspector examination.
While Takagi was lamenting how difficult promotion was, Juzo Megure's ears twitched up ahead, and he said calmly:
"Sato, give Takagi a little background. Given what's coming, it'll actually be troublesome if he knows nothing."
"Huh?" Takagi froze for a moment.
Ahead of him, Sato looked embarrassed. "Inspector Megure, I..."
