Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Incomplete Sequence 9 — “Half a Marauder” 1 Awakens in a body whose previous owner died after drinking a potion. Gains Stealing, Agile Hands, Exceptional Observation, physical enhancement, and short-weapon proficiency. Estimates their strength at roughly 60–70% of a complete potion’s effects.
Complete Sequence 9 — Marauder 36 37 38 Negotiates for a complete Marauder potion from Baron Percival and survives a dangerous advancement involving whispers, severe pain, and abnormal growths. Existing abilities strengthen rather than increase in number; Exceptional Observation reaches nearly twenty meters, exceeding the usual range of roughly ten meters.

Background

Lorry grew up in an orphanage on Blue Star. Government assistance and charitable donations enabled him to finish university, after which he found a low-paying but undemanding job. He had read Lord of the Mysteries more than a dozen times before transmigrating into its world 1.

His new body belonged to another orphan named Lorry. That boy survived by begging until the Pickpocket Gang recruited him at thirteen. He spent five years as a pickpocket, enduring beatings for failed assignments while learning theft, disguises, literacy, etiquette, and history 1 2 12.

After the predecessor stole a valuable wristwatch, the gang boss rewarded him with a lavish meal and a blue-black potion. He lost consciousness and died; the transmigrated Lorry then awakened in his body in a sewer. The setting was August 1349, shortly after Klein’s awakening and the Tarot Club’s founding 1 4.

Appearance

Lorry has dark-black eyes and initially bears a wound on his forehead 3 15.

  • Disguises: Uses his predecessor’s makeup skills to evade police recognition before acquiring a mystical disguise item 10.
  • Formal clothing: Wears a top hat and formal clothes when visiting a detective and attending the shooting club 12 18.
  • False Face appearance: Adopts the face of an impoverished, middle-aged Southern Continent man with weathered skin, ordinary features, and wrinkles around the eyes. This is a disguise, not his natural appearance 22.

Personality

Lorry is cautious but capable of taking calculated risks. He initially avoids Klein and the Tarot Club because he fears disrupting the original story, endangering Klein’s development, or introducing danger from Amon through his pathway. His familiarity with the novel is his greatest advantage, but his defeat by Saul teaches him that a reader’s supposedly omniscient perspective can encourage fatal underestimation 4 35 37.

He distinguishes survival-driven theft from exploiting vulnerable people. After stealing clothing, he resolves to repay the household; when searching another home for food, he deliberately leaves its more valuable property untouched. He also cleans Perry’s home and works his fields rather than simply accepting his hospitality 2 4 5.

Gratitude and guilt drive his revenge. Although his spirituality warns him to flee Perry’s attackers, he refuses to abandon the man who sheltered him. Following Perry’s death, he becomes merciless toward those responsible, pursuing Cyril even though the retired policeman was neither a relative nor a longtime acquaintance 6 8 30.

His internal commentary is frequently self-deprecating, particularly about poverty, dangerous mystical purchases, and encounters with dogs. He is also willing to bluff: at the literary salon, he claims to share Fors’s faith in the God of Steam and Machinery after recalling her religious background 13 18 20 49.

Abilities & Skills

Stealing and Infiltration

The Marauder potion makes taking objects from a target’s pockets easier and supplements the predecessor’s professional pickpocketing experience 1.

  • Lockpicking: Understands mechanical locks at a glance and opens the bodyguards’ bedroom doors with a kitchen fork 28.
  • Stealth and pursuit: Follows Cyril and his guards without detection, combining inherited experience with potion-enhanced movement 27.
  • Impersonation: Uses ordinary disguises and False Face to evade recognition and issue orders while posing as Cyril 10 30.
  • Limits: Familiar gang members know his conventional disguises, making supernatural concealment necessary for investigating their headquarters 17 24.

Exceptional Observation

Lorry perceives valuables within range as clusters or points of light, but cannot directly identify the objects producing them 1 6.

  • Infers the positions of people from the height and placement of valuables they carry 6.
  • Detects the valuable Bird-Beak Mask among Glowa’s possessions 8.
  • Reaches nearly twenty meters after becoming a complete Marauder, compared with a normal range of around ten meters 38.
  • Does not provide comprehensive threat detection: a concealed dog escapes his notice during an early theft 2.

Agile Hands and Physical Enhancement

The potion improves wrist and finger steadiness, flexibility, eyesight, and general physical performance 1 18.

  • Enables rapid knife manipulation and precise strikes against Glowa 7 8.
  • Supports evasive movement in cramped spaces and escape from ordinary police pursuers 7 10.
  • Accelerates his progress in shooting practice 18.
  • Does not make him a match for Saul, a Sequence 8 Provoker capable of pursuing him and dodging bullets 35.

Weapons Training

Lorry possesses potion-granted proficiency with short swords and daggers, later supplementing it with firearms practice 1 18.

  • Uses a seedling-cutting crescent knife to sever Glowa’s hands and attack his throat 7 8.
  • Trains regularly at the Sugar Shooting Club under Wendy 18 19.
  • Demonstrates rapid, accurate shooting against a target thirty meters away 32.

Mysticism and Ritual Magic

Lorry begins with meditation techniques remembered from the original novel, then studies Eye of Wisdom’s introductory mysticism notebook 1 14 15.

  • Masters the Hermes incantation passage needed for his soundproofing ritual 19.
  • Successfully silences his bedroom, blocking both interior noise and sounds from the street 21.
  • Studies Spirit Vision and its applications to ether bodies, ghosts, and spirits; the supplied account does not establish his mastery of it 32.
  • Recognizes Beyonder Characteristics and the risks of leaving them in contact with ordinary objects 9.

Acting Method

After stealing from Duke Negan’s study, Lorry identifies his first Marauder acting principle 41 42:

  • “Choose the right moment to act!” Successful theft depends on timing and circumstances, not merely skill 42.
  • The theft improves potion digestion, expelling lingering mental influence and strengthening his control over his abilities 42.
  • He suspects that more difficult thefts accelerate digestion, but treats this as a hypothesis requiring further testing 42.

Writing

Lorry uses his predecessor’s fluent written Loenese to pursue authorship when his wanted status prevents more conventional employment 11 12.

  • Writes Young Roselle, initially preparing a twenty-one-page sample for an underground publisher 12.
  • Gains enough underground sales for the publisher to request more material 31.
  • Secures a trial publication of one thousand copies through contacts at a literary salon 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Serrated Dagger: Bought for 200 pounds. Its approximately twenty-centimeter, green-tinged blade can inflict weakening, drowsiness, or poison when it hits. Its mystical effects have about a year remaining at purchase and expire when the blade turns completely white. Saul confiscates it, but Lorry later recovers it 15 35 44.
    • Carried in a spring-release sheath on his right wrist, activated by pulling a cord 22.
  • Modified revolver: Purchased from Kaspars with one hundred rounds of ammunition for four pounds; later confiscated by Saul 19 35.
  • False Face: Purchased from Mr. A for 500 pounds. Alters his facial appearance convincingly enough to fool Beyonders. Wearing it for more than half an hour causes it to fuse to his face, requiring his face to be cut away to remove it 20 21 22.
  • Shadow Ring: Used to move through shadows during the infiltration of Duke Negan’s mansion. Its use produces mounting irritation and malicious thoughts, which subside when Lorry puts it away. The MI9 Arbiter borrows it during Saul’s capture and returns it afterward 41 44.
  • Sunfire / Assassin Bane: A white pendant confiscated from Saul and awarded by Duke Negan. Releases searing light with Sequence 8-equivalent power, dispelling darkness within twenty meters and severely damaging corpses and Wraiths 45 46 47.
    • Does not distinguish allies from enemies. Prolonged exposure reduces ordinary people to praising the Sun after more than fifteen minutes; Beyonders can endure up to three hours 47.
    • Must remain in contact with gold. After more than ten minutes without it, the pendant melts into golden liquid and rapidly evaporates 47.
  • MI9 emergency badge: A round, black, button-like badge that lets Vera locate him through a mystical connection when activated with spirituality. Works within Backlund, but distance weakens the signal and makes interference easier 46 47.
  • Eye of Wisdom’s notebook: Introductory mysticism notes covering basic knowledge and ritual magic 14 15.
  • Roselle’s Diary pages: Buys three pages for fifteen pounds; later offers Fors five pages of Roselle’s Notes for fifty pounds 21 49.
  • Bird’s Beak — former possession: A mask taken from Glowa that grants a sense of smell superior to a hunting dog’s. Causes nasal discomfort after use and permanently destroys the wearer’s sense of smell if worn for more than three hours. Sold for 680 pounds and a promise of assistance 9 21.
  • Glowa’s Sailor Characteristic — former possession: Sold for 360 pounds, funding his early purchases of occult knowledge and weaponry 14 15.

Relationships

  • Perry — Retired policeman and benefactor who provides food, shelter, and help obtaining legal identification. His murder becomes Lorry’s central reason for pursuing revenge; Lorry learns his name afterward 3 5 8 34.
  • Miles — Neighbor, sublessor, and literary contact. Helps arrange publishing opportunities, introduces Lorry to other writers, and warns him to avoid Alyosha 10 12 31 49.
  • One-Eyed Cyril — His predecessor’s gang boss and the immediate target of his revenge. Cyril administered Percival’s potion and ordered Glowa’s pursuit; Lorry interrogates and kills him 12 29 30.
  • Baron Percival — Source of the original potion and later Lorry’s coercive employer. Supplies the complete Marauder potion, then forces him to steal from Duke Negan 29 36 39.
  • Saul — Percival’s Sequence 8 Provoker bodyguard. Captures and disarms Lorry, but is later lured into an ambush and taken into MI9 custody 35 36 44.
  • Eye of Wisdom — Gathering organizer and source of introductory occult instruction. Authenticates Glowa’s pathway and witnesses transactions 14 15.
  • Kaspars Kanlyning — Introduces him to Eye of Wisdom’s gathering and sells him a revolver 13 19.
  • Inspector Gana — Perry’s former colleague, whom Lorry approaches about identification and later questions about the Koyar Village case 9 33.
  • Vera — MI9 superior who oversees his unofficial membership and gives him an emergency badge and Duke Negan’s reward 46 47.
  • Duke Negan — Initially the target of Lorry’s forced theft, then the recipient of his warning about Percival’s plot. Arranges treatment for his poisoning and offers employment, which Lorry declines 44 45.
  • Fors — Fellow writer who praises Young Roselle and negotiates to purchase Roselle’s Notes for a friend 49.
  • Klein — A potential patron whom Lorry deliberately avoids approaching, fearing damage to the original story and Klein’s future role against the Outer Deities 4.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Awakening and Perry’s Murder

After escaping the sewer, Lorry steals clothing and food to survive. Perry catches him at gunpoint but offers shelter after recognizing that he took food rather than valuables. Lorry spends two days clearing the retired policeman’s fields in exchange for help obtaining identification 2 3 5.

Returning home, he discovers Glowa and two enforcers searching the house and questioning Perry. He kills the attackers, but finds Perry already dead. After cleaning and laying out the body, he waits nearby until police arrive, then leaves for Backlund with the attackers’ money, Glowa’s Characteristic, and the Bird’s Beak 6 7 8 9.

Backlund and Revenge Against Cyril

An attempt to collect identification instead exposes Lorry as a wanted man. He escapes, adopts a disguise, rents a home on Iris Street, and begins writing to support himself. Through Kaspars, he enters Beyonder gatherings, sells Glowa’s Characteristic, and acquires weapons, occult instruction, and False Face 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 21.

Lorry hires Detective Stuart to investigate Cyril, then probes a suspected trap by feeding Cyril’s location to the rival Bloodhand Gang. After escaping the gang himself, he tracks Cyril to another house, incapacitates its occupants with gaseous anesthetic, and interrogates him 12 23 24 25 27 28.

Cyril identifies Baron Percival as the potion’s source. Lorry obtains the details of Cyril’s hidden funds, impersonates him to dismiss his bodyguards, and drowns him while unconscious. During the interrogation, the predecessor’s deeply conditioned fear of Cyril finally breaks 28 29 30.

Percival’s Mission and MI9

After killing Old Jack for exposing his survival, Lorry falls into Saul’s ambush. Captured and brought to Percival, he bargains for the complete Marauder potion by arguing that his incomplete abilities cannot accomplish the baron’s task 34 35 36.

Percival orders him to steal three political documents from Duke Negan’s study and administers a poison that will take effect in seven days. Disguised as a footman, Lorry infiltrates the duke’s ball and exploits the disturbance surrounding Qilingus’s death to complete the theft 39 41.

Lorry subsequently warns Duke Negan about Percival’s plans and helps an MI9 Arbiter trap Saul. The duke reports Percival’s confession in a suicide note, promises treatment for Lorry’s poisoning, and rewards him with Sunfire. Lorry refuses household employment but accepts unofficial MI9 membership 44 45 46.

Afterward, gaps in his memory lead him to suspect that a hidden Spectator Pathway Beyonder used hypnosis during his treatment. Concerned about protecting his transmigration secret, he resolves to seek a trustworthy Psychiatrist 47.

Literary Recognition

Young Roselle becomes successful with its underground publisher, providing income alongside the money recovered from Cyril’s account. Miles later brings Lorry to Altair’s literary salon, where he meets Fors and obtains a thousand-copy trial publication. On the journey home, Miles warns him that associating with Alyosha will bring trouble 31 47 49.
