Legend had it that, long, long ago, the Digital World had been peaceful.
Until data from the outside world entered, network viruses ran rampant, and more and more Virus-type Digimon appeared.
Golemon told them that the Digimon ruling this area was called Devimon.
It used Black Gears to control other Digimon, and the Impmon near Qidian Village was merely one of its subordinates.
This attack on Qidian Village had most likely also been meant to satisfy Devimon's desire for domination.
Golemon was deeply grateful to Gabumon for helping it break free from the Black Gear's control. To repay Gabumon, Golemon decided to stay and fight Impmon alongside them.
That made Mushroomon utterly miserable!
Originally, in its one-on-one fight with Palmon, Mushroomon had been able to gain a slight advantage through nimble footwork.
But now, three opponents had suddenly appeared. How was it supposed to fight?

Golemon did not compete for "experience," but after Smokemon absorbed the data, it evolved into Meramon. Its formerly smoke-like body completely transformed into a mass of flames.
As for the data divided among Gabumon and the other two Digital Monsters, it was clearly not enough to support them in maintaining their Rookie forms. After the battle ended, they reverted to the second stage of their In-Training forms.
"Impmon definitely won't give up. We can send the children away first."
