Background / History

Rise under Gu Beiwu

The Gu Lineage rose to prominence through Gu Beiwu’s service across three reigns. He helped the Founding Emperor conquer the realm, assisted the next emperor in expanding its borders, and nurtured numerous generals. His northern campaigns reached the Barbarian Tribe’s imperial court, earning him a dukedom and appointment as marshal 2 27 49.

Gu Beiwu also enforced Great Li’s authority over martial sects. When powerful sects resisted the dynasty’s rules, he led an imperial cavalry campaign that destroyed more than a hundred sects, including seven first-rate powers. The surviving sects submitted, leaving the Gu Lineage with a particularly fearsome reputation among southern Yan Province’s martial organizations 50.

During a battle at the Border Pass, Gu Beiwu rescued the future Emperor Xuan from a Barbarian Tribe encirclement and suffered lasting injuries. With age and accumulated ailments, he eventually relinquished military command and became Right Chancellor 2 49.

Transfer of Military Authority

Military authority passed to Gu Beiwu’s son, Gu Lingxiao. Initially inexperienced and unable to command effectively, Gu Lingxiao depended on his father’s veteran officers to defeat a barbarian invasion. The victory earned him the title General Who Pacifies the North and the public reputation of “Imperial God of War,” although elite circles mocked the inflated credit he received 2 27.

Despite those shortcomings, the northern army’s victories and recovery of territory were real. Gu Lingxiao continued guarding the Northern Territory for over a decade, preserving the family’s position in frontier military affairs 40 49.

Military Strength and Resources

Blood Tiger Guard

  • Origins and loyalty: Gu Beiwu trained these elite warriors from childhood. All are orphans without relatives to worry about and are considered absolutely loyal to the Gu Lineage 48.
  • Specialties: Military strategy, concealment, assassination, and other combat techniques 48.
  • Ding Si: A Source Sea Realm expert assigned by Gu Yanshuang to protect Gu Chenfeng secretly. During the gorge ambush, he holds off four Source Sea Realm attackers simultaneously; afterward, he becomes Gu Chenfeng’s personal bodyguard 44 48.
  • Limited availability: Gu Yanshuang wanted four Blood Tiger Guard members assigned to Gu Chenfeng, but Gu Lingxiao had transferred the others to the Border Pass 48.

Residence Guards

  • Regular escorts: Martial guards accompany Gu Chenfeng outside the residence and secure locations he visits 12 17.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Gu Beiwu’s Seclusion and the Succession Crisis

Three months before the early assassination attempt on Gu Chenfeng, Gu Beiwu’s old injuries flare up and he enters seclusion. Rumors that he will not survive embolden hostile houses led by Left Chancellor Huangfu Hong. With Gu Lingxiao unreliable and the second sister absent, Gu Yanshuang bears most of the responsibility for keeping the lineage stable 2.

Gu Yanshuang arranges stronger protection for Gu Chenfeng and investigates his attackers. The discovery of gu worms points toward Northern Frontier practitioners, but a group of Gu Masters in the capital is killed before the family’s investigators can reach them, leaving the trail cold 9 27.

Court Suppression and the Rumor Campaign

The Left Chancellor’s faction works with the Ministry of Personnel to dismiss, demote, or transfer officials friendly to the Gu Lineage. Gu Yanshuang responds through secret meetings with allies and pursues promotion within the Tiger Guard to bolster their confidence. The Imperial Guard itself remains the royal family’s private army and cannot participate in factional struggles 27.

A parallel campaign accuses Gu Lingxiao of killing civilians for military credit and exploiting frontier residents. His actual extravagance and inflated achievements make a blanket denial difficult, while admitting those faults risks discrediting the entire household 27 29.

Golden Kylin Gathering

Gu Chenfeng attends the Golden Kylin Gathering partly to demonstrate that the family is neither frightened nor ashamed. The confrontation escalates when Zhong Yanqi publicly condemns the lineage and questions Gu Chenfeng’s poetic ability 31 37 38.

Gu Chenfeng answers through poetry, culminating in “Man Jiang Hong: Northern Expedition,” which he presents as his father’s work. The gathering’s scholars reconsider the accusations, apologize, and pledge to defend the Gu family against further slander. The victory restores public support without resolving the underlying political rivalry 39 40 48.

Failed Abduction and Retaliation

After the gathering, Gu Chenfeng’s convoy is ambushed in a gorge. The attackers use a Quicksand Formation to separate his carriage from Ding Si and the residence guards, but Gu Chenfeng reveals his concealed strength and fights his way through them. Gu Yanshuang and Tiger Guard cavalry arrive to rout the remaining force 43 44 45 47.

Gu Yanshuang identifies the likely objectives as seizing the family’s mineral vein and testing Gu Beiwu’s condition. Gu Chenfeng decides to stop responding passively and confront the Huangfu Lineage’s hidden organizer, Huangfu Yun 47 48.

The first group of ambushers is traced to the Four Directions Gate. Gu Yanshuang blockades its mountain with the lineage’s own guards, then arrives with Gu Chenfeng and demands that its members surrender 50.

Emperor Xuan’s Public Support

Emperor Xuan recalls Gu Beiwu’s military achievements and rescue of his sovereign, declares the Gu Lineage Great Li’s greatest contributors, and orders “Man Jiang Hong” displayed in the Hall of Imperial Polarity. The Third Prince recognizes this as an explicit declaration of support for the Right Chancellor and his family amid the factional struggle 49.

  • Zhang Lineage — Staunch Huangfu ally. Zhang You repeatedly targets Gu Chenfeng through schemes at Great Wilderness Ridge and the Rare Beast Garden 6 10 43.
  • Ouyang Lineage — A potential counterweight to the Zhang Lineage. Gu Chenfeng encourages Ouyang Cai to seek his family’s retaliation after the gambling trap; an established formal alliance is not shown 8.
  • Myriad Treasures House — Commercial contact through Gu Chenfeng. Liu Fuyan grants him favorable treatment, while explicitly maintaining that the trading house invests in valuable clients rather than joining political struggles 8 30.
