Background / History
Chen Jue grew up in Chen Village and attended Shannan Primary School before continuing his education in the county seat. His mother developed cancer while he was in middle school, leaving the family heavily indebted. His father went away to work to repay those debts but died in a construction-site accident during Chen Jue’s high-school years. His grandparents subsequently died while he was in college 2 8.
The contractor paid more than 600,000 yuan in compensation for his father’s death. Most of it went toward Chen Jue’s education at a third-tier college, caring for his grandparents, and repairing the family home with help from his uncles. After graduating, he worked first in Beijing and then in Hangzhou for more than six years 2.
Despite earning slightly over 10,000 yuan per month in Hangzhou, he had saved less than 300,000 yuan and could not afford a home. A layoff prompted him to return to the countryside, where his newly awakened attribute panel offered an alternative to office work and property ownership. With no surviving immediate family or dependants, he committed his time and savings to martial training 1 2 12.
His interest in cultivation was also shaped by loss: few members of his family had died peacefully of old age. Rather than assuming he could become immortal, he hoped to live beyond a hundred without illness or calamity and witness the world’s future development 18.
Appearance
- Height and initial weight: 178 centimeters tall and over 80 kilograms when he returned home, more than ten kilograms heavier than at college graduation 4.
- Early build: Retained a small belly and facial fat even after his initial attribute gains 20.
- Complexion: Regular sleep and increased constitution reduced facial oiliness and hair shedding. The Muscle-Tendon Change Classic later gave him fair, rosy, baby-soft skin 8 16.
- Glasses and bearing: Described as scholarly-looking and wearing glasses; his youthful complexion and developing martial presence attracted attention on a crowded bus 23.
- Later physique: Developed thick, bulky arm muscles. Exerting Bright Force and conditioning techniques could give his arms a dark gray, iron-like appearance 47.
Personality
Initially exhausted and disillusioned with city life, Chen Jue becomes intensely motivated by measurable improvement. He prefers cultivation to romance and declines matchmaking rather than pursuing the conventional marriage-and-career path he once expected. His training is systematic: he creates schedules, tests his athletic performance, and uses proficiency readings to assess his methods 8 9 13 27.
He treats martial arts as tools rather than remaining rigidly attached to one school. If an art has limitations, he is willing to learn another. He readily seeks advice from elderly practitioners, instructional videos, forums, and documentaries, although his reliance on attribute points occasionally makes him overlook practical requirements 38 40 47.
Chen Jue is sincere and willing to help others, but increased strength does not eliminate his nerves. He pursues a pickpocket alongside soldiers, yet admits after fighting a wild boar that he remains introverted and easily anxious at heart. Li Xiangning describes him as an ascetic type who dislikes hassle, while valuing his loyalty and willingness to defend what is right 23 37 49.
Abilities & Skills
Attribute Panel
A mental interface tracks Chen Jue’s attributes, learned skills, proficiency, free points, and eventually his health index 1 12.
- Direct allocation: Points can increase attributes or skill proficiency; 0.01 points initially converts to 10 proficiency 3.
- Training feedback: Visible proficiency helps him identify and correct mistakes, compressing the time needed to master techniques 16.
- Point generation: Martial practice, strenuous walking, and exercise generate free points while improving relevant attributes 3 5 13.
- Restrictions: Sufficient proficiency does not bypass every advancement prerequisite, as demonstrated by Body Conditioning 38.
- Changing reference interpretation: The panel initially labels 1 as the average value for a standard adult male. After testing his sprint speed, Chen Jue concludes that its physical reference is closer to a human-performance limit than an ordinary person’s fitness 1 27.
Boat Boxing and Bright Force
Boat Boxing provides Chen Jue’s first martial foundation, with eight routines that combine effectively with Eight Immortals Stance 22.
- Combat application: Uses Li Leans on the Iron Crutch to close five or six meters and launch successive punches against Instructor Zou 44.
- Force coordination: Lv2 training lets him deliberately close his pores and coordinate force through his body 30.
- Not supernatural qi: He understands the warm currents associated with his practice as circulation of blood and vital energy, rather than internal energy or true qi 30.
- Limited protection: Bright Force alone does not toughen his hands sufficiently; his first wall-punching test injures his right hand 30.
Eight Immortals Stance and Hidden Strength
The stance develops balance, reflexes, visual tracking, and coordinated movement 10.
- Footwork: Incorporates it into his running stride during the pickpocket pursuit 23.
- Progressive difficulty: Trains on a table, a swaying boat, open water at night, and finally beneath the reservoir’s whirlpool 9 17 21 46.
- Underwater efficiency: Proficiency increases more than ten times faster underwater than on the dam or boat 46.
- Hidden Strength: Perfection enables force release through his hands and feet, producing waves and disturbing sediment underwater 47.
- Breathing limit: Underwater training lasts roughly twenty minutes, but repeated Hidden Strength releases accelerate his need to surface for air 46 47.
- Daoist bonus: Pure Yang Lüzu, Enlightened Quanzhen subsequently accelerates his learning of Wudang fist and stance techniques 50.
Twelve Forms of the Muscle-Tendon Change Classic
This art chiefly improves constitution, with major breakthroughs also strengthening his muscles, fascia, bones, and overall physique 15 36.
- Recovery support: Uses it to ease fatigue and restore himself between demanding workouts 32 38.
- Breakthrough gains: Lv2 substantially raises both strength and constitution 36.
- Depletion risk: Breakthroughs rapidly draw on stored nutrients and require replenishment 36.
- Diminishing returns: Routine constitution gains decrease after an initial breakthrough unless the skill advances again 16.
Shaolin Child Prodigy Skill
Combines movement and stillness, improving constitution while also generating free attribute points 33.
- Perfected status: One Qi, Rising Sun Birth increases fatigue resistance, sustains vigorous qi and blood, and slows aging 34.
- Training endurance: Supports his intensive exercise and martial arts schedule 40.
- Nutrient absorption: Its perfected benefits help him absorb Mighty Pills unusually efficiently 35.
- Condition: The panel states that the bonus status weakens if he loses his primal yang 34.
Shaolin Body Conditioning Skill
Also called the Impact-Conditioning Skill, this hard-body art strengthens his skin, muscles, and fascia through progressively harder striking implements 31 38 40.
- Training progression: Uses bamboo striking, then bricks, then copper rods; changing implements is necessary to clear advancement prerequisites 31 38 40.
- Impact resistance: At Lv1, punches through a brick in his wall with only aching and bruising, rather than repeating his earlier hand injury 38.
- Combat defense: Takes Li Xiangning’s Bright Force punch without injury during their final bout 45.
- Other application: Uses a whole-body burst to shake much of the water from his skin and clothing after underwater training 46.
Supreme Ultimate Fist and Tai Chi Thirteen Stances
These Wudang arts offer a way to develop Hidden Strength throughout his body rather than only through his hands and feet 50.
- Rapid acquisition: Both reach Lv1 in just over an hour under his Daoist bonus state 50.
- Initial gains: Their combined breakthroughs raise strength, agility, and constitution by 0.01 each 50.

Relationships
- Chen Yan — Late grandfather; Chen Jue identifies himself to village elders as Chen Yan’s grandson and retains the family’s hillside plot 1 17.
- Grandpa Huang / Old Mr. Huang — Introduces him to Boat Boxing. Chen Jue teaches him Eight Immortals Stance in return, although Huang later urges him to find work rather than devote himself to martial arts 2 3 17.
- Jiang Fan — Friend in Hangzhou who stores his belongings; they exchange jokes and discuss Chen Jue’s decision not to return soon 6.
- Lin Mengruo — Former primary-school deskmate and childhood playmate. Their reunion helps clarify his rejection of a conventional married life 8.
- Chen Aqiang — Distant relative addressed as Uncle Aqiang; runs the village shop where Chen Jue collects deliveries 12.
- Mr. Zhou and Zhou Jingjing — Reservoir visitors he befriends. He catches Jingjing when she nearly falls into the boat and rows father and daughter around the reservoir 22.
- Commissar Yao — Invites him to the military-civilian exchange, appoints him an external instructor, and helps recommend him for an army-wide competition 32 45.
- Instructor Zou — Regimental combat instructor who welcomes him to the exchange and later loses to him in the second round 40 44.
- Li Xiangning / Master Li — Boat Boxing inheritor whose videos help Chen Jue learn. Shares a family maxim that guides his investigation of Hidden Strength; becomes a valued martial friend 40 42 49.
- Zhou Gang — Soldier and Hung Gar practitioner defeated in the two-against-one final. Requests discipleship, but Chen Jue instead offers to teach him during regimental visits 44 45.
