Background / History
Xia Xu transmigrates into the body of a high school student on Blue Ocean Star, in the Xia Kingdom. Almost a week afterward, he remains delighted by the chance to experience school life again. He retains an adult mindset and memories of Earth, including business-related language experience 1 3 45.
Both Xia Xu and his body's original owner experienced childhood poverty; the original owner was also an orphan. His inheritance consists of a small amount of savings and a cramped, rundown apartment in an urban village. Living expenses, the approaching college entrance examination, and the need for startup capital initially constrain his plans 3 5 10.
After discovering Attribute Viewing, he considers fortune-telling but quickly decides that identifying talented people and building companies would make better use of it. Finding that his own destiny identifies him as a supporting character in Hunter adds a more urgent objective: surviving an unfamiliar storyline whose danger he cannot initially assess 1 2.
Appearance
Xia Xu is good-looking rather than exceptionally handsome, with a youthful face that initially undermines his credibility when recruiting adults 17.
- Build: Fairly tall and broad-framed, though not muscular at the time described 17.
- Bearing: His adult composure makes him seem older than his classmates; Tang Youxin associates his manner with a father or older brother 17.
- Recruiting attire: Buys a suit to conceal some of his schoolboy appearance and present himself more professionally 17.
Personality
Xia Xu is pragmatic about risk. Although he wants money, he refuses to gamble against Yao Dawu because winning could invite retaliation from people he cannot resist. He likewise declines to follow Zhang Jianmin to Tibet when the next storyline appears risky and unprofitable 11 43.
His kindness often comes wrapped in teasing, pressure, or elaborate persuasion. He buys Tang Youxin meals after recognizing her poverty, protects her from embarrassment before their teacher, and argues her into accepting compensation. He also respects her need to reciprocate, accepting her invitation to eat after recovering her wallet rather than refusing her thanks 3 5 10 22.
His fear of Hunter briefly leaves him feeling helpless, but he eventually rejects passive waiting. He searches for outside help, buys protective equipment, and trains despite pain and intimidating instruction. When choosing a home near Luo Hongyun, he rents an entire building specifically to avoid drawing uninvolved residents into danger 28 30 42 48.
Abilities & Skills
Attribute Viewing
Xia Xu can inspect translucent, game-like panels containing a person's life tier, fate or destiny potential, talent potential, special abilities, obsession, and affinity toward him 1 2.
- Talent identification: Detects abilities that a person's occupation or education may conceal, including Tang Youxin's programming talent and Yang Bowen's investigative talents 2 18.
- Descriptions: Can inspect explanations of ordinary fate entries, including Tang Youxin's “Husband's blessing” 1 2.
- Social feedback: Tracks changes in others' affinity or affection toward him 6 25 42 45.
- Investigative clues: Combines Zhuo Ren's pickpocket fate, expensive-game-item obsession, and opportunity to identify him as the likely wallet thief 9 10.
- Self-inspection: Can view his own panel, although it lacks obsession and affinity fields 2.
- Observed cost: Repeated use initially appears to have no restrictions or cost 2.
The information requires interpretation: an obsession is not full mind-reading, and talent potential does not mean someone has already learned the relevant skill 6 10.
Plot Identification and Foreknowledge
Attribute Viewing identifies people as protagonists or supporting characters in named storylines. Xia Xu uses these connections to investigate The Dying Man and Night Owl, while trying to avoid his own Hunter destiny 2 4 39 40.
- Partial synopses: Can reveal storyline information that helps him anticipate encounters and valuable objects 12 32 33.
- Incomplete access: Plot descriptions may initially display question marks or stop at an ellipsis when an important connected character has not been encountered 2 32 40.
- Practical exploitation: Uses foreknowledge to pursue the Guanyin Statue containing valuable Angong Niuhuang Pills 33 36.
- No guaranteed plot barriers: Recognizes that staying near another storyline's protagonist does not physically prevent the Hunter monster from attacking 43.
Combat and Survival Training
His one-star combat potential gives him an advantage over many ordinary peers, but remains far below the five-star talents of Luo Hongyun and Louise 9 45 48.
- Learns strikes, power-generation techniques, defense, and injury minimization from Luo Hongyun 48.
- Practices escape methods, including running away, scaling walls, and crawling through openings 48.
- Develops composure under threat through repeated evasion drills 49.
- Remains a beginner rather than a combat master; overcoming fear does not guarantee that he can dodge an attack 48 49.
Recruitment and Negotiation
Xia Xu combines attribute information with an understanding of people's ambitions and circumstances 19 20.
- Recruits Yang Bowen with a paid trial, an 8,000-yuan monthly base salary, and an appeal to his wish to make his family proud 20.
- Encourages Tang Youxin to learn programming and offers education funding in exchange for future employment 22.
- Invests 500,000 yuan in Hong Bo's unfinished game project in exchange for 70 percent of the new company's equity 50.
- Insists on a documented purchase of Qian Chenghe's statue, preventing the acquired goods from being treated as stolen property or evidence 36.
Languages
- English: Fluent from business use before transmigration 45.
- Russian: Understands a limited amount 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Stab-resistant vest — Worn beneath his uniform or outerwear; protects the upper body against stabs and slashes, but lacks full-body coverage and breathes poorly 43.

- Pepper spray and portable stun gun — Carried as self-defense options against stronger opponents 43.
- Damascus steel dagger — Selected as a portable bladed weapon 43.

Relationships
- Tang Youxin — Classmate, part-time helper, and developing romantic interest. He supports her meals and programming education; she brings him breakfast and grows more comfortable around him. He suspects her luck-enhancing fate contributes to several fortunate encounters, but does not prove that connection 3 6 18 22 26 39.
- Yang Bowen — First investigative employee. Xia Xu recognizes his hidden aptitude, hires him away from truck driving, and assigns him to locate Zhang Jianmin and the antiques seller 18 20 23 26.
- Luo Hongyun — Combat instructor and eventual hired protector. Xia Xu initially struggles to recruit him, then strengthens their relationship by helping him accept Louise as his daughter 41 45 48.
- Louise — Luo Hongyun's daughter and Xia Xu's fellow trainee. Her rapid mastery repeatedly exposes the difference between her five-star combat talent and his one-star potential 45 48.
- Tang Hao — Classmate sharing his Hunter supporting-character destiny. Xia Xu deliberately avoids him; his death confirms the seriousness of the threat 2 9 26 28.
- Liu Xiulan — English and homeroom teacher. She warns him against allowing romance to disrupt examination preparation, while recognizing his unusual composure and maturity 4 5.
- Xia Xue — Helps him enter a construction site. He later gives her medicine for her hospitalized grandfather and apologizes for remarks that made him appear sympathetic to Qian Chenghe 24 33 36.
- Zhang Jianmin — Protagonist of The Dying Man whose activities Xia Xu monitors for opportunities; not initially a close personal acquaintance 11 23 30 43.
