Background / History
Birth and life-bound refinement
Lin Can originated from the fusion of a mysterious seed and a Stinger Hawk Moth egg within Lin Ke’s Niwan Palace. Upon hatching, she identified her species as “Broodmother,” and Lin Ke gave her the name Lin Can. She immediately demonstrated the ability to create a Stinger Hawk Moth and addressed him as “Daddy” 10 16.
Her first trip outside frightened her because she found the air unpleasant. When the Cloud Frontier Beast Venerable demanded the return of his Spirit Pearl, Lin Ke suspected that her emergence had exposed an aura connected to the mysterious bead that created his Niwan Palace. This remained his inference rather than a confirmed explanation, but it prompted him to restrict her outings 10 11.
Lin Ke then refined her as his life-bound spirit insect. Their existing connection made the process effortless compared with the forceful subjugation normally required. During his subsequent breakthrough, she purified his spiritual power and helped open his Embracing Origin Palace; the soil of the Niwan Palace descended into the newly opened lower palace 11.
Breeding work and growth
Lin Can’s ability to reproduce known spirit insects gave Lin Ke an alternative to repeatedly attempting risky crossbreeding. He sold twenty Stinger Hawk Moths for 4,560 Spirit Stones, financing cultivation techniques and a Golden-Wing Nest 16 18.
After swallowing an egg from a successful Blackgold Moth–longhorn beetle pairing, she identified the resulting species as the Amethyst Longhorn Beetle. Lin Ke initially delayed producing one to prioritize her own development. Once sufficiently fed, she created a beetle whose defensive ability addressed a weakness in his cultivation 18 19 21 22.
Her large food requirements helped drive the establishment of a dedicated insect-breeding facility. During the following month, she formed a cocoon and buried herself in the soil to grow 19 25.
Life in the underground refuge
As conflict approached, Lin Ke introduced Lin Can to Zong Ya and entrusted her care to his senior sister while he was away. They agreed that only the two of them should know of her existence. Lin Can was to live on the sixth and seventh underground levels, where she could obtain food and take root in the soil 46 47.
After adapting to the outside environment, she participated in Lin Ke’s frog-breeding experiments. She consumed two eggs produced by Blood Sandalwood Frog–Red-Striped Frog pairings and condensed a much larger egg. It hatched into a scarlet tadpole, which Lin Ke moved to a newly created pool after she warned that it needed water 49 50.
Appearance
Lin Can has a small humanoid upper body combined with insect traits and a woody, root-like lower body. Zong Ya describes her appearance as a mixture of plant and bee 10 46.
- Eyes: Topaz-like, crystalline compound eyes without eyelids; they dim when she cultivates 10 49.
- Lower body: Resembles tree roots and is later described as a single wooden leg. She plants it in soil while keeping her hands above ground 10 46 47.
- Size: Initially palm-sized, later approximately forearm-sized; her cocoon emergence adds only a barely noticeable amount of growth 19 21 46.
- Movement: Can uproot herself, hop into Lin Ke’s hand, and crawl rapidly using her hands 10 18.
Personality
Lin Can is affectionate, curious, and childlike. She initially clings to Lin Ke for reassurance, especially when confronted with unfamiliar air or the Beast Venerable’s overwhelming presence. Her questions about the Gu Tablet and Lin Ke’s beetle transformation show an eagerness to investigate unfamiliar things 10 11 21 23.
Food dominates much of her attention: she drools over captured insects, asks whether new objects or creatures are edible, and explains that she digests quickly. Nevertheless, she follows Lin Ke’s instructions, waits for breeding experiments before eating the dead insects, and willingly helps with cultivation and production 17 21 49 50.
Her intelligence is compared to that of a five- or six-year-old child. Although she shares part of Lin Ke’s soul, she possesses an independent personality; after cocooning, she becomes less clingy and develops a close rapport with Zong Ya 47 49.
Abilities & Skills
Egg-based reproduction
By consuming the egg of a particular spirit insect, Lin Can gains the ability to produce that species repeatedly. She condenses an egg through spiritual power rather than requiring Lin Ke to repeat the original crossbreeding process each time 16 50.
| Documented product | Acquisition / Production | Requirements and results |
|---|---|---|
| Stinger Hawk Moth | Her original fusion incorporates a Stinger Hawk Moth egg; she produces one immediately after hatching 10 16. | Approximately ten ordinary thumb-sized insects provide enough food to produce one moth 19. |
| Amethyst Longhorn Beetle | Eats the successful crossbreeding egg, then produces a beetle after accumulating sufficient energy 18 21 22. | Requires approximately 130 insects. The produced beetle has near-mid-grade spirit quality and can enlarge its carapace 19 22. |
| Unnamed frog hybrid | Eats two eggs from Blood Sandalwood Frog–Red-Striped Frog pairings and produces a larger egg 50. | Hatches into a scarlet tadpole that requires water. No production cost or adult form is established 50. |
- Production consumes energy also needed for her own growth; excessive output can therefore compete with her development 19 21.
- Egg creation visibly strains her, leaving her flushed and panting 10 50.
- Lin Ke states that she cannot directly hatch ordinary Blood Sandalwood Frogs; his plan depends on first creating a new breed through the Niwan Palace 48.
Life-bound spiritual support
As Lin Ke’s life-bound spirit insect, Lin Can acts as a filter through which his spiritual power becomes purer 11.
- Communicates directly with him mentally after refinement 11.
- Turns into a phantom and merges into his body 11.
- Channels purified spiritual power to help expand and open his Embracing Origin Palace 11.
Spirit-insect command
Lin Can can direct the Stinger Hawk Moth to hunt, process food, fetch supplies, and perform test attacks 10 23 47.
- Functions as a second controller: when Lin Ke gives no orders, she can make decisions for the insects herself 47.
- Uses a moth to drain prey and convert it into jelly that she consumes 10 21.
- Commands a moth to attack Lin Ke’s Amethyst Carapace during a defensive test 23.
Instinctive cultivation and inherited knowledge
Lin Can cultivates without a formally taught method. She absorbs spiritual energy, converts it into spiritual power, and circulates it along routes that feel smooth and comfortable to her 46.
- Ordinarily takes root in soil while cultivating 46.
- Relies heavily on consuming flesh and blood for eventual growth, despite also practicing spiritual cultivation 49.
- Reads the Gu Tablet’s inheritance through her connection to Lin Ke and the Niwan Palace 21.
- Uses inherited knowledge to understand concepts such as digestion and unfamiliar kinds of meat 17 49.
- Her established diet consists of insects and insect-derived jelly; she refuses pork and beef 17 21.
Relationships
- Lin Ke — Creator, master, and father figure. She calls him “Daddy,” while he feels a shared-blood bond and treats her as his daughter. She is also connected to his soul and serves as his life-bound spirit insect 10 11 49.
- Zong Ya — Trusted caretaker. Lin Can initially calls her “Mommy,” but accepts “Auntie” after correction. The two get along well after Lin Can moves into the underground refuge 46 49.
- Fang Tong and the Green Mulberry Garden farmers — Indirect providers of food through insect gathering and breeding. Their work supplies both her growth and spirit-insect production 17 19 43.
- Stinger Hawk Moths — Her products, commanded helpers, and food processors. Lin Ke compares their role to worker ants feeding a queen rather than dedicated soldiers 10 23 47.
