Background / History
Gu Qingqing is the younger sister of Gu Zhengchen and the daughter of Gu Pei and Gu Shi. Her family originally came from Hongtong, Shanxi, but moved toward Kaifeng after offending a powerful clan. During the wars at the end of the Yuan dynasty, her parents moved the children between hiding places. They settled in Teng County two years before the founding of Great Ming 24 27.
In the first year of Hongwu, Gu Pei was conscripted to transport provisions and military funds for Xu Da’s army; news of his death followed. The family later borrowed money to send Gu Zhengchen to the imperial examinations. Their cancellation left the household impoverished, without its land or ox, and dependent on neighbors for food 1 2 8 27.
Appearance
- Youthful face: Described as pretty and adorable, with youthful cheeks 1.
- Large, bright eyes: Especially noticeable when filled with tears during Wang Youcheng’s coercion 1.
- Small braids: Swing back and forth when she shakes her head at her brother’s proposed sugar-refining method 9.
Personality
Qingqing is deeply attached to her mother and brother. Faced with starvation and her mother’s unsuccessful pleas for help, she considers selling herself into servitude if doing so will recover the family’s ten mu of land. Her initial resistance—holding a sickle against Wang Youcheng—gives way under his pressure, rather than from any desire to enter his household 1.
Poverty makes her careful with money: she regards buying tea as extravagant and refuses a bowl for herself. Yet she also has a playful, food-loving side, delighting in sugar and attempting to keep extra copper coins. She enjoys watching plays, although her experience is limited to a few temple-fair visits with her mother 3 6 8.
Her admiration for Gu Zhengchen grows when he confronts the Zhao family, a sharp contrast to his former weakness. That trust is not unquestioning: she objects to pouring muddy water over sugar because she believes it will ruin their food. Once the experiment succeeds, she eagerly wakes him to share the result 4 9.
