At her warning, the bodyguards rushed forward nervously and surrounded Count Lawson, shielding him with their bodies against attacks from the shadows.
Several other bodyguards lunged at the newsboy, trying to pin him to the ground.
Although the newsboy wondered what mistake had exposed him, he had no time to think. Dropping all pretense, he raised his flintlock and pulled the trigger at Count Lawson.

A bodyguard stopped the bullet with his body, leaving Count Lawson unharmed.
Regret and unwillingness showed in the newsboy's eyes. The next second, he took two punches and spat blood, before three or four burly bodyguards pinned him down and subdued him.
Amid the confusion, everyone sprang into action, gathering around Count Lawson with heightened vigilance. The count was extremely nervous and kept backing away.
