Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Peak Seventh Rank 9 Already a seventh-rank expert when Zhou Cheng enters the Fan Residence. He is close to the eighth rank, but the violent nature of Overlord True Energy requires medical treatment to balance his body before attempting a breakthrough.
Eighth Rank 26 34 Confirmed to have recently advanced by the poetry gathering. He later attributes his breakthrough to witnessing Wu Zhu’s battle with the mysterious Ghost-Faced Man, following years of cultivation and training with Wu Zhu.
  • Zhou Cheng’s early recollection says Fan Xian ultimately stopped at upper ninth rank in the original story. That is not an advancement shown in this novel’s supplied chapters 2.

Background / History

Fan Xian is a transmigrator who studied humanities in his previous life. Despite retaining knowledge of his former world, he spends sixteen years feeling isolated because no one around him understands that experience 24.

According to the account Zhou Cheng gives him, Ye Qingmei was betrayed by someone close to her and killed on the night she gave birth. Wu Zhu subsequently brought her surviving child, Fan Xian, to Danzhou. Zhou Cheng refuses to identify the betrayer, leaving Fan Xian to suspect Fan Jian—a suspicion rather than an established fact 11 20.

Fan Xian grows up publicly identified as Fan Jian’s illegitimate son, unaware that his biological father is Emperor Qing. Zhou Cheng privately tells Sang Wen that Fan Xian is his younger half-brother and that fewer than ten people in the Capital know the truth 21.

His mother’s businesses were incorporated into the Imperial Treasury. Fan Jian wants him to marry Lin Wan’er and use that opportunity to reclaim Ye Qingmei’s legacy, making his engagement a matter of court politics as well as marriage 20.

Appearance

  • His facial features resemble those of the Eldest Prince and Second Prince. Zhou Cheng points out the resemblance while disguising the truth about his imperial parentage as a joke 24.

Personality

Fan Xian initially wants to live as a wealthy man of leisure rather than pursue political power. After finding people he cares about in the Capital, he plans to marry Wan’er and return to Danzhou, placing a peaceful life above his earlier investigations 20 48.

His compassion is a recurring vulnerability. He will not risk the Fan household’s lives to capture Zhou Cheng, helps Teng Zijing search for his family, and refuses to treat Teng as merely a servant or possession. Zhou Cheng repeatedly calls him a “good person” while exploiting those attachments 10 21 49.

He is protective without being conventionally scrupulous: he uses poison, covertly drugs Si Lili, beats Guo Baokun during an investigation, and supplies a false alibi afterward. When Teng Zijing is forced to report on him, Fan Xian advises him to continue playing the informant rather than endanger his family 9 31 35.

His devotion to Wan’er outweighs status and wealth. Before knowing that Drumstick Girl is his arranged fiancée, he is willing to abandon the marriage and its connection to the Imperial Treasury for her. Sang Wen and Ye Linger both recognize the strength of that commitment 30 45.

Abilities & Skills

Overlord True Energy

  • Cultivates the technique from childhood, with Wu Zhu’s training assisting his development 34.
  • Its extreme hardness, yang intensity, and violent nature place strain on his body and complicate advancement 9.
  • Allows him to challenge opponents above his level, but its aggression can harm its wielder as well as the enemy 49.
  • His furious release of true energy produces a shock wave when Zhou Cheng threatens Fan Ruoruo 39.
  • At seventh rank, he is completely overwhelmed by Zhou Cheng’s Grandmaster true-energy domain 9.

Poison and Sedatives

  • Uses a cloud of purple poisonous smoke against Zhou Cheng, although the Grandmaster disperses it before contact 9.
  • Secretly adds a sedative to Si Lili’s wine while pouring it. Her resistance training allows her to recognize the drug and feign unconsciousness 31.
  • Attempts to poison Zhou Cheng after the threat against Ruoruo. He later observes that the intended punishment appears not to have worked 48.

Medicine

  • Prepares medicine that eases Wan’er’s chest discomfort and coughing after only a few days, despite the imperial physicians’ earlier inability to resolve her tuberculosis 46.
  • Blends more than eighty medicinal flowers and leaves into a sachet that relieves her coughing and breathlessness 46.

Martial Combat and Observation

  • Dodges a sudden sword attack and exchanges a palm strike with the attacker at the poetry gathering 27.
  • Uses an eighth-rank martial artist’s powers of observation to watch Zhou Cheng for signs of recognition during his transmigrator test 26.
  • Evades the opening arrows of the Ox Pen Street ambush and helps eliminate the two archers 48.
  • Struggles to penetrate Cheng Jushu’s defenses; both he and Teng Zijing are wounded in their initial exchanges with the peak eighth-rank body-conditioning expert 49.

Knowledge from His Previous Life

  • Recognizes “Why not eat meat gruel?” as a historical saying from his original world, prompting his suspicion that Zhou Cheng is another transmigrator 24.
  • Proposes making glass, soap, and white sugar, only to learn that Ye Qingmei already introduced all three 20.
  • Presents Du Fu’s “Climbing High” as his own poem and wins the poetry contest. Zhou Cheng recognizes its source but keeps it secret 27.
  • His remembered poetry contrasts with his poor calligraphy, which Wan’er nevertheless uses to verify his identity 40 42.

Equipment / Items

  • Overlord True Energy manual — A closely guarded text whose existence initially appears known only to Fan Xian and Wu Zhu. Zhou Cheng demands the original and forces Fan Xian to agree by threatening a maid and the household 9 10.
  • Love token and wooden box — Entrusts his token from the Divine Temple encounter to Fan Ruoruo for safekeeping 20.

  • Emperor Qing — Biological father, although Fan Xian does not know this. The emperor arranges his engagement and engineers his first encounter with Wan’er 20 21.
  • Fan Jian — Nominal father and Count Sinan. Explains the Capital’s factions and urges him to reclaim Ye Qingmei’s commercial legacy; Fan Xian initially distrusts him because of Zhou Cheng’s account of her death 20 21.
  • Wu Zhu — Protector whom he calls “Uncle.” Trains him from childhood, guards him against assassins, and fights Zhou Cheng on his behalf 9 34.
  • Fan Ruoruo — Younger sister within the Fan family and a trusted confidante. Helps him investigate Zhou Cheng; threats against her provoke his strongest anger 20 24 39.
  • Fan Sizhe — Nominal younger brother. Fan Xian protects him during the restaurant confrontation, and Sizhe later tries to drive away the constables coming to arrest him 22 35.
  • Liu Ruyu / Auntie Liu — Fan Jian’s second wife. Initially suspected of arranging the Danzhou attacks, she earns his trust by offering to protect him from prosecution 20 35.
  • Lin Wan’er — Fiancée and the Drumstick Girl he loves at first sight. They reconcile after the cancellation-letter misunderstanding; he subsequently visits her nightly and treats her illness 20 42 45 46.
  • Teng Zijing — Bodyguard, friend, and sworn-in-spirit brother. Fan Xian helps search for his family and invites them to settle near him in Danzhou; Teng dies protecting him 21 48 49.
  • Wang Qinian — Investigative contact who supplies Teng’s file. His fabricated report causes trouble, but he reveals the family’s location and later restrains Fan Xian from attacking Zhou Cheng 24 31 49.
  • Zhou Cheng / Li Chengcheng — Secret elder half-brother and principal antagonist in Fan Xian’s storyline. Fan Xian initially finds him genuine, then turns against him after admissions of attempted assassination and threats against Ruoruo 21 39.
  • Li Yunrui — Wan’er’s mother and political enemy. Repeatedly seeks his death to prevent him from taking control of the Imperial Treasury 13 20.
  • Li Chengze — Second Prince who tries to recruit him. Uses Li Hongcheng to maneuver him into the Si Lili affair, then seeks renewed cooperation after his break with Zhou Cheng 27 32 41.
  • Si Lili — Courtesan used in his alibi. He drugs her to leave her boat without harming her; she later endures torture rather than retract her testimony 31 35.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Danzhou: The Ghost-Faced Man

After surviving several assassination attempts within six months, Fan Xian encounters the masked Zhou Cheng at the Fan Residence. His poison attack fails, and he follows Zhou Cheng and Wu Zhu to witness their battle outside town. Threats against a maid and the residence force him to agree to surrender the original Overlord True Energy manual 9 10.

Zhou Cheng subsequently bargains for regular sparring with Wu Zhu in exchange for answering one question. Fan Xian watches every session and intensifies his own training. His chosen question concerns Ye Qingmei’s death, but Zhou Cheng’s incomplete answer leaves him with new suspicions about Fan Jian 11.

Capital Arrival and Poetry Gathering

Fan Xian enters the Capital, falls for Drumstick Girl at the Divine Temple, and reunites with the Fan household. Fan Jian’s explanation of the Imperial Treasury reveals why the arranged marriage has made him a target for powerful factions 20 21.

Hearing about Zhou Cheng’s childhood remark raises his hopes of finding another transmigrator. He tests the prince with unfamiliar verses at the poetry gathering, but Zhou Cheng deliberately shows no recognizable reaction. Fan Xian then defeats Guo Baokun in the poetry contest with “Climbing High” 24 26 27.

Zhou Cheng offers to locate Drumstick Girl while misleading him about her relationship to his fiancée. Fan Xian writes an Engagement Cancellation Letter, believing that ending the arranged marriage will free both himself and Wan’er to pursue their chosen partners 29 30.

Teng Zijing’s Family and the Court Case

A fabricated Council file claims Guo Baokun killed Teng Zijing’s wife and child. Fan Xian helps ambush and interrogate Guo, then learns from Wang Qinian that the family is actually being held at Prince Cheng’s Residence 30 31.

The beating leads to a public trial. Fan Xian relies on Li Hongcheng and Si Lili for an alibi, while the Crown Prince challenges the testimony and raises the issue of Teng Zijing’s concealed survival. Emperor Qing’s decree identifies that concealment as an Overwatch Council arrangement and orders the princes not to interfere 35 36.

Afterward, Zhou Cheng admits arranging attempts on Fan Xian’s life and threatens to obtain Fan Ruoruo’s hand in marriage to compel cooperation. Fan Xian erupts in rage, and Teng Zijing restrains him 39.

Reunion with Wan’er

At the One Stone Residence, Fan Xian discovers that Drumstick Girl is Lin Wan’er. She initially thinks his claim to be Fan Xian is mockery, then confirms his identity by having him reproduce his poem and handwriting 42.

The couple reconcile and realize the cancellation letter could still jeopardize their marriage. Wan’er rushes to stop her mother, but Emperor Qing independently refuses Li Yunrui’s request to rescind the decree. Fan Xian later visits Wan’er at the Imperial Villa and begins treating her illness 43 44 45 46.

Ox Pen Street Ambush

While traveling toward a meeting with the Second Prince, Fan Xian and Teng Zijing discuss leaving the Capital together. Their journey is interrupted by archers and Cheng Jushu. Neither man abandons the other, and both remain to fight despite their injuries 47 48 49.

Cheng Jushu and Teng Zijing are dead when Wang Qinian arrives. Fan Xian blames himself for failing to save Teng and suspects Zhou Cheng arranged the ambush, although Zhou Cheng denies responsibility. When the prince kicks Teng’s body and claims ownership over him, Fan Xian lunges with Teng’s dagger; Wang Qinian holds him back 49.
