  • Arthas noticed a crack beneath the skull on Frostmourne's hilt and realized the sword was becoming unstable.
  • Tirion told Arthas that the souls inside Frostmourne, including Terenas, Uther, and Nathanos's mother, were fighting to escape.
  • A flashback showed Nathanos telling Tirion that Frostmourne was Arthas's greatest source of power and that its blade could crack under repeated strain.
  • Nathanos revealed that the souls inside Frostmourne were attacking it from within, giving Tirion confidence that the sword could be broken.
  • Tirion ordered the warriors to attack, and Arthas trapped him in blossoming ice with Frostmourne's energy.

Ch. 505Icecrown Citadel (25)

Ch. 506Icecrown Citadel (26)

Nathanos freed Tirion from Arthas’s ice prison, and Tirion’s strike shattered Frostmourne, releasing the souls it held. Arthas was overwhelmed by the freed dead and defeated, and his father’s soul appeared beside Nathanos as he lay dying.

  • Arthas told Nathanos he was tired of others deciding what was right, and Nathanos apologized for helping lead him into darkness.
  • Nathanos hurled Shadowmourne at Tirion’s ice prison, allowing the paladin to break free with the Holy Light.
  • Tirion charged Arthas, and Frostmourne shattered as the two weapons clashed.

  • Nathanos cast aside his weapons and clothing, then examined his cracked, decaying body and saw his ruined face reflected in Sulfuras.
  • Nathanos realized that time would eventually destroy him and that he could not escape the Forsaken’s cruel fate.

Ch. 508Icecrown Citadel (28)

Nathanos stood on the edge of the Frozen Throne, intending to end his life, until his mother Daphne appeared and helped him reconsider his pain and anger toward his family. After she vanished, the Valkyr Agatha asked him to become their new contractor, offering to preserve his body.

  • Nathanos approached the cliff above the Saronite spikes, planning to destroy his body.
  • Daphne appeared and reassured Nathanos that she did not blame him, asking whether he truly hated his lover and family.
  • Nathanos realized he had mistaken his own assumptions about Alleria and Stephan for their thoughts, and accepted that none of them had been wrong.
  • Daphne told Nathanos that his people were waiting for him, then vanished after he reached for her.
  • Agatha introduced herself as the Valkyr leader and explained that the Valkyr needed a new contractor after the Lich King’s defeat.
  • Agatha offered Nathanos a pact: the Valkyr would obey him and use their power to preserve his dead body.

Ch. 509Icecrown Citadel (XXIX)

Nathanos refused Agatha’s offer to preserve his body unless the Valkyr spared the corpses, then ordered them to destroy Shadowmourne. Three months later, as he considered the Forsaken’s future, news of a dark purple dragon in Dragonblight prompted him to summon the imprisoned Onyxia.

  • Nathanos rejected Agatha’s offer to preserve his body because he feared the Valkyr’s magic could fail, but agreed to consider a contract if they left the corpses undisturbed.
  • Nathanos explained that he did not want the dead forced back into undeath and asked the Valkyr to help him destroy Shadowmourne.
  • Three months later, Nathanos recorded events in his diary, including Veronalara’s resignation, his meeting with Taresa, and Meryl’s demand for a decision about the Forsaken’s future.
  • Belmont reported that Forsaken spies had seen a dark purple dragon in Dragonblight, and Nathanos ordered him to bring Onyxia, who was imprisoned in Maraudon.

Ch. 510Missing

Sylvanas learned that Alleria and Vareesa had secretly gone to Dalaran to search for something, and the revelation ended her Winter Veil break. In Dalaran, Alleria and Vareesa continued searching for Alleria’s missing son, Belorell, whom Alleria believed was still somewhere in the city.

  • A Ranger reported to Sylvanas that Alleria and Vareesa had arrived in Dalaran with a group in plain clothes, and Sylvanas learned they were looking for something.
  • Sylvanas heard the soldier’s whispered explanation, confirmed the intelligence, and decided her vacation was over.
  • Alleria met Vareesa at a Dalaran dessert shop and learned that the Farstrider Rangers had not found Belorell.
  • Alleria insisted Belorell was still in Dalaran, while Vareesa worried that he might have used a portal to escape.

Ch. 511Sewers

Alleria and the Blood Elves searched Dalaran for Belorell after he ran away, eventually entering the Sewers as their last lead. Their search was interrupted by a Dalaran mage who brought up his brother’s death during Kael'thas’s escape.

  • Rommath and Lor'themar discussed Belorell’s disappearance, but Lor'themar said his search of the boy’s room had turned up no clues.
  • Alleria questioned the Ranger-Captains and, after Vareesa suggested the Sewers, ordered a thorough search there.
  • Rhonin initially demanded that the Blood Elves leave Dalaran, but Aethas persuaded him to allow them one more hour in the Sewers.
  • Alleria and Vareesa entered the Sewers in Ranger attire, where their human guide reminded them that Kael'thas had once been imprisoned there.
  • Vareesa challenged the guide after he mentioned a ban on Blood Elves entering the Sewers, and he said his brother had died during Kael'thas’s prison break.

Ch. 512The Grimace

Alleria and Vareesa searched Dalaran’s Sewers for Belorell, following a vagrant’s clue to another exit. There, a captive and a grimace drawn on his gag revealed that Alleria had just missed her son.

  • The masked mage left after warning Alleria to pay the Sewers’ vagrants for information and reminding her that she had less than an hour.
  • Alleria paid a vagrant who said Belorell had headed toward another Sewers exit, then sent her Rangers to search while she and Vareesa went ahead.
  • Alleria and Vareesa followed the airflow toward the exit and passed areas where mages conducted dangerous experiments.
  • At the exit, Alleria found a bound human instead of Belorell and grabbed him by the throat before Vareesa stopped her.
  • Vareesa pointed out the gag, and Alleria recognized the grimace drawn on it as a sign that Belorell had just escaped her.

Ch. 513Gryphon

Belorell escaped his guards and tried to flee Silvermoon City, but Alleria and Vareesa chased him to Krasus Platform. He took off on an out-of-control Gryphon and vanished into the darkness, leaving his mother desperate to learn where it was taking him.

  • Belorell disguised himself and headed for Krasus Platform, determined to escape Silvermoon City and its rigid schedule.
  • Alleria and Vareesa spotted Belorell and chased him as he ran toward the flight master.
  • Belorell paid a silver coin, climbed onto a Gryphon, and discovered he did not know how to control it.
  • The Gryphon took off without a command, and Belorell gradually overcame his panic as it flew away from Krasus Platform.
  • Alleria stopped the Rangers from shooting at the Gryphon, then watched it carry Belorell into the darkness.
  • The flight master said the Gryphon was linked to flight points across Northrend but had received no destination code word, and Alleria angrily demanded an explanation.

Ch. 514Valkyr

After nearly two years as a Forsaken prisoner, Onyxia was brought to Alterac and released from her shackles by Nathanos. He introduced her to seven Valkyr and told her she would be the first to witness their power.

  • Forsaken soldiers escorted Onyxia through a portal to a snowy mountain pass near Alterac.
  • Two Dark Rangers led Onyxia past Alterac's city walls to Nathanos, who was forging arrows beside seven winged figures.
  • Nathanos asked about Onyxia's imprisonment and ordered the Dark Rangers to remove her shackles and withdraw.
  • Onyxia regained her power but hesitated to transform when she felt a sudden pressure and saw the seven Valkyr.
  • Nathanos introduced the Valkyr as Agatha, Daschira, Alsurra, Ananid, Kira, Sigrún, and Brynhildr, and said Onyxia would witness their power.

Ch. 515Chromatus

Nathanos used the Valkyr to force Onyxia to reveal memories of Deathwing, Nefarian, and Sinestra, uncovering the Black Dragonflight’s schemes and Nefarian’s creation of a five-headed creature. After seeing the creature hatch, Nathanos asked the exhausted Onyxia if it was Chromatus.

  • Nathanos told Onyxia that the Valkyr would reveal her memories, and Kira’s spell prevented her from transforming.
  • Agatha, Daschira, and Alsurra used their magic to extract and filter Onyxia’s memories for fragments about Deathwing, Nefarian, and Sinestra.
  • Onyxia tried to confuse Nathanos with false images, but the resistance caused her severe pain and spasms.
  • Nathanos learned that Onyxia knew about the Twilight Dragons and saw memories of Nefarian experimenting on a Dragon Egg.
  • Nefarian’s experiment produced a spotted, slimy creature with five heads of different colors, and Nathanos asked Onyxia whether it was Chromatus.

Ch. 516Ruby Sanctum

Belorell arrived at a vast, ancient tower in Northrend and entered its red portal, emerging in the Ruby Sanctum. There, Krasus discovered the Elf boy beside the Dragon Eggs and wondered how he had appeared.

  • Krasus returned an unusual red-and-white Dragon Egg to its place, then turned at Belorell's voice and saw the boy nearby.

Ch. 517Twilight's Hammer

Belorell met Krasus in the Ruby Sanctum after accidentally arriving there, then became caught in a Twilight's Hammer attack on the Dragon Eggs. The chapter ended as one Egg began to crack and release foul purplish-black smoke.

  • Krasus explained to Belorell that the Ruby Sanctum was the Red Dragons’ sanctuary, and Belorell said he had come there by accident on a Gryphon.
  • Belorell told Krasus that his father had died before he was born, then lay down to rest.
  • Krasus sensed intruders, warned Belorell to hide, and attacked the Twilight's Hammer members who had entered the sanctum.
  • Krasus fought to protect the Dragon Eggs while Belorell spotted a Troll casting a spell over one of them.
  • Belorell approached the Troll, and a ring of fire killed it before it could harm him.
  • Belorell saw cracks spread across the Dragon Egg as purplish-black smoke seeped from it.

Ch. 518Corruption

Krasus discovered that the Twilight's Hammer was corrupting the Dragon Eggs in the Ruby Sanctum, and a cultist's dark magic began transforming him. As he prepared a life-consuming spell to stop the corruption, the story shifted to Nathanos at Shadowfang Keep, where a mysterious portal opened.

  • Belorell accidentally set a newly hatched Chromatic Dragon aflame, and Krasus recognized the hatchling as one of Nefarian's creations.
  • Krasus saw Twilight cultists corrupting the Dragon Eggs and fought them, but a dying cultist infected his arm with dark magic.
  • Krasus suspected the dragon sanctuaries had been attacked and resolved to use a spell that would destroy the eggs at the cost of his own life.
  • Krasus questioned Belorell about his name, then began casting the spell without telling the boy that he might die too.
  • Nathanos reflected on Chromatus while staying at Shadowfang Keep, then heard magic tearing open a portal in his room.

Ch. 519End of Time

Malygos told Nathanos that Belorell had vanished during the destruction of Wyrmrest Temple and was likely swept into the reverse flow of time by Nozdormu. He then revealed that he had come to show Nathanos the End of Time.

  • Malygos appeared in Nathanos's room and said Belorell had disappeared, though he did not know where the boy was.
  • Malygos explained that Nozdormu had arranged for Belorell to be taken to Wyrmrest Temple by a Bronze Dragon disguised as a Gryphon.
  • Malygos recounted how Twilight's Hammer attacked the temple, Krasus destroyed the dragon eggs, and the Wyrmrest Accord collapsed.
  • Nathanos learned that Belorell had been with Krasus before the explosion and accused Nozdormu of taking his son.
  • Malygos said Nozdormu had likely pulled Belorell into the reverse flow of time to change the future, then invited Nathanos to witness the End of Time.

Ch. 520Path of Time

Nathanos witnessed the End of Time, where Deathwing’s victory had left Azeroth and the Guardian Dragons dead. After learning that Chromatus had overwhelmed the Guardians, Nathanos resolved to walk the Path of Time again to try to change the future.

  • Nathanos arrived with Malygos at a ruined Dragonblight and found Deathwing dead amid the corpses of the Alliance, Horde, and Forsaken forces.
  • Nathanos discovered Ohan Ogre's Sword dead and watched Meryl shatter into icy dust.
  • Malygos explained that Deathwing had won and ended his own life, naming the catastrophe the Twilight Judgment.
  • Malygos showed Nathanos the dead Guardian Dragons at their shrines and explained that Chromatus wielded five powers while the Guardians had only four.
  • Nathanos realized that gathering the five Guardian powers might change the End of Time and told Malygos he would walk the Path of Time again.

Ch. 521Undead Beneath the Ruins

Belorell survived the explosion that separated him from Krasus and found himself in the Eastern Plaguelands, where he followed a marker on his mother’s map to a ruin. As an Undead crawled out from beneath the rubble and sensed an elf nearby, Belorell hid behind a tree, and the creature found no one there.

  • Belorell woke injured in the Eastern Plaguelands and realized Krasus had saved him from the explosion.
  • Belorell conjured food and water, identified his location near Storsom, and spotted a red marker on his mother’s map.
  • Belorell followed the map marker to hillside ruins guarded by two Undead Hounds and found scattered bows and arrows.
  • Belorell heard someone digging through the rubble and watched a scarred hand emerge before an Undead man crawled out, laughing that he was still alive.
  • The Undead sensed an elf, approached Belorell’s hiding place, and found no one when he looked around the tree.
