Every school entrance seemed to have its own regular NPCs.
They hung around in groups of three or five, riding garishly colored scooters, their clothes always looking a size too small and clinging tightly to their bodies.
A boy in black-framed glasses was among them.
He still looked rather young, around fifteen or sixteen, and stood about five foot nine.
He held his lighter out to another guy with an ingratiating smile.
"Brother Feiji, when do you think I can join you guys?"
The man called Brother Feiji leaned toward the flame and lit the cigarette between his lips.
"Once you trade that crappy Yadi for a Ninebot! Otherwise, you'll drag down the Motorcycle Gang's image."
"Right, right..."
The boy in glasses looked up, suddenly spotted a familiar face, and hurriedly turned away. But it was already too late.
"Tao Wenye?!"
The boy in glasses reluctantly turned back toward the person striding over and smiled awkwardly. "B-Brother Bu'e!"
Yu Bu'e looked at him, then at the other scooter boys, with a strange expression.
"Big-headed Mosquito, you know this guy?" Brother Feiji hopped off his scooter and tilted his head up to look at Yu Bu'e.
"Ahem, Brother Feiji, he used to tutor me. He's really good at studying..."
"Big-headed Mosquito?" Yu Bu'e was amused.
When he had tutored Tao Wenye, he had heard his mother explain that "Wenye" came from the verse, "A crane calls from the deepest marsh, its voice heard across the wilds."
He wondered what expression his mother would wear if she learned that "Wenye" had become "Big-headed Mosquito."
Brother Feiji looked at Yu Bu'e, took two steps forward, rolled up his shirt, and slapped his belly like a seal before flicking a glob of spit off his tongue.
"Yo, a good student, huh? Pay us protection money, and the Motorcycle Gang will have your back!"
Yu Bu'e's head hurt.
Looking at Brother Feiji, who was a full head shorter than him, with scrawny limbs and a shriveled frame that probably weighed under a hundred pounds, he really wanted to grab him under the armpits and stick him on top of a refrigerator.
Wouldn't that leave him squealing in frustration?
Just then, the roar of a motorcycle drew their attention.
A red-and-white motorcycle came through the crowd and stopped right in front of them.
The scooter boys' eyes lit up. They hurried over and circled the motorcycle, inspecting it again and again.
"Holy shit! A Dumachuan 570! And it's a numbered edition! Only seventeen in the whole world!"
"Damn! Brother Feiji, doesn't this bike cost over three million?"
The man on the motorcycle removed his helmet and adjusted his hair in the rearview mirror.
He got off with the helmet in his hand and sneered at the pompadoured guy.
"You barely have a fucking penny to your name, but you sure know a lot."
The flashy young punks didn't seem to realize he was mocking them.
One redhead even replied smugly, "Of course! Brother Feiji's an expert. There's no motorcycle he doesn't know!"
Brother Feiji stepped forward, stroked the paintwork, then twisted the throttle, envy written all over his face.
Suddenly, he pulled out the Apple phone he had bought on a twenty-four-month installment plan and brought up a QR code.
"Hey, man, want to join our group chat? Come join the Motorcycle Gang!"
The man chuckled, then suddenly raised his arm and smashed the helmet in his hand down on Brother Feiji's head.
The sudden movement made Yu Bu'e's pupils contract sharply.
With a thud, Brother Feiji crashed to the ground and let out a scream.
He raised a hand to his head and felt wetness spread across his palm.
"Blood... blood!"
The other young punks were all terrified.
None of them had expected the young man who rode up on the motorcycle to attack without warning.
"I'll fucking kill you!" Recovering his senses, the redhead threw a punch at the biker.
The man turned and kicked him in the chest, sending him flying six or seven meters in an instant.
Yu Bu'e watched in alarm. This had nothing to do with him, but when he saw the man turn his gaze toward the stunned Tao Wenye, his expression changed at once.
"Stop!"
Even as he spoke, he hurried forward, grabbed Tao Wenye's arm, and pulled him away.
To his surprise, the biker really did stop when he spoke, and even looked at him with a smile.
"Yu, weren't they just trying to give you trouble? I took the liberty of teaching them a lesson for you. Aren't you happy?"
Yu Bu'e was taken aback. "You know me?"
"Of course. Hello, Yu Bu'e. My name is Chen Jiliao."
Chen Jiliao tossed the bloodstained helmet aside, wiped his hand on his clothes, and extended it toward Yu Bu'e.
Seeing that Yu Bu'e had no intention of shaking hands and was instead watching him warily, he grinned again. "I'm Luo Feixuan's older brother."
Yu Bu'e was even more surprised.
School had just let out, and the entrance was packed with people. Naturally, the commotion had drawn plenty of attention.
"Someone's fighting over here!"
"Serves them right! Those punks don't look like decent people anyway!"
The school security guard came over too. Still holding his lower back and pressing on his herniated disc, he barked, "What are you doing? No fighting!"
Chen Jiliao looked at him and smiled. "We're outside the school. Besides, neither they nor I are students at Yucheng No. 1 High School. What does this have to do with you?"
"Well... that's a real brainteaser!" After thinking it over, the guard decided Chen Jiliao had a good point, then turned and went back.
Chen Jiliao turned his attention back to Yu Bu'e.
Seeing that Yu Bu'e still had no intention of shaking hands, he lowered his hand too.
"Yu, here's the thing. I'd like to buy a Meridian-Opening Pill from you. Name your price."
As he spoke, his eyes remained fixed on the Meridian-Opening Pill hanging around Yu Bu'e's neck.
He had harbored some doubts before, but the moment he saw Yu Bu'e, he was certain.
This was the person he'd been looking for!
When Yu Bu'e didn't answer, Chen Jiliao took two steps closer.
"Of course, even if I am Xuanxuan's older brother, I won't take advantage of you. How about one million?"
When Yu Bu'e remained silent, Chen Jiliao gritted his teeth. "One and a half million! How about it?"
The onlookers, along with Tao Wenye and the others, were all stunned.
How did one and a half million sound like a mere hundred and fifty coming out of his mouth?
Yu Bu'e stared at Chen Jiliao and shook his head.
"Not selling."
Chen Jiliao froze, then grew anxious. "Why? If you're unhappy with the price, say so! Fine, you name the price!"
Yu Bu'e shook his head again.
"No other reason. I just don't want to sell it to you."
Chen Jiliao's expression stiffened.
Meanwhile, Brother Feiji lay on the ground, still clutching his head, secretly delighted.
Hmph, so what if you're rich? You still got shot down, didn't you?
Even Yu Bu'e looked a lot more agreeable to him now.
Chen Jiliao stared at Yu Bu'e, a chill lurking in his eyes.
Yu Bu'e ignored him, grabbed Tao Wenye, and turned to leave.
"Brother Bu'e, Brother Feiji's still back there!" Tao Wenye struggled at first, but two kicks made him behave.
Watching Yu Bu'e's retreating back, Chen Jiliao slowly narrowed his eyes and sneered.
"Heh... no wonder he's so close to Luo Feixuan. They're both ungrateful little shits!"
With that, he opened the small bag hanging from his motorcycle, took out two stacks of cash, and flung them onto Brother Feiji before riding off in a cloud of dust.
