Organization

The Four Great Immortal Sects of Great Jin

The four sects occupy Great Jin’s principal Immortal Mountains and Blessed Lands. Their elders also maintain residences in Guardian Cities, recruiting disciples and receiving resources from the surrounding territories 22.

Sect Principal Seat Distinction
Vast Righteousness Sect Mount Tianmu Great Jin’s foremost Immortal Sect; renowned for its cultivation methods 36 140.
Heart Lake Reversed Water Island / Northern Immortal Sect Fushui Island, Heavenheart Lake Ranked second; renowned for formations and associated with the Mirror-Viewing Platform 36 140 142 155.
Taihua Sect / Southern Immortal Sect Mozi Mountain Ranked third; renowned for sword cultivators and custodian of Immortal Sword Tianxiu 36 123 140 160.
Liu Clan of Mount Zhilin / Liu Immortal Sect Mount Yuekong, south of the capital Renowned for Daoist arts; suffered particularly heavy losses during the Southern Borderlands Upheaval 36 42 140.
  • Hu Luo’er describes the four sects as “branches of the same tree,” each contributing a different specialty 140.
  • Their shared allegiance does not prevent rivalry. Their interests have splintered over time, and the Southern Borderlands Upheaval widened the imbalance between them 44 85.
  • Northern Qi likewise has Four Great Immortal Sects, which select its four Immortal Children 172.

Internal Structure

The Taihua Sect provides the most detailed example of Immortal Sect administration; not every office is established as universal.

Position or Body Documented Function
Sect Leader and Deputy Sect Masters Direct sect policy, oversee major assets, and manage relations with other powers 115 125 172.
Sect Hall Houses senior elders, distinguished disciples, and attendants; its elders can wield the sect’s Immortal Sword in an emergency 135 140.
Elder Hall A competing power center within Taihua, capable of deploying its own Void Boats 90 107.
Peak Masters Lead individual peaks, recruit disciples, and cultivate their own networks of influence 64 86 135.
Inner and Outer Disciples Receive differentiated status and opportunities; outer disciples undertake registered sect missions 57 86 136.
Attendants and Martial Retainers Perform support, protection, and mountain-guarding duties; they do not automatically possess a disciple’s privileges 115 135 157.
Punishment Hall The Northern Immortal Sect’s enforcement body, with its own prison and arresting disciples 155.

Authority and Resource Control

Government and the Imperial Courts

  • Guardian City administration: Wealth, taxes, spiritual treasures, and minerals flow into Guardian Offices and Immortal Sect residences. Ordinary provincial and county authorities are depicted as subordinate revenue-collecting offices 22.
  • Compulsory assignments: Feng Hu explains that an Immortal Sect mission cannot be refused, abandoned, or evaded without punishment for defiance and contempt 57.
  • Imperial legitimacy: Liu Zhi reports that even Great Jin’s succession and enthronement require the stationed Immortal’s approval 55.
  • Competing royal interests: Dependence does not mean complete obedience. Great Jin’s Sima Clan competes with the sects, while Lü Bufan discovers signs that Northern Qi is secretly strengthening itself and Western Liang resists Immortal influence 11 124 175.
  • Suppression of Confucianism: Heavenly Wave Valley exploits the court and Immortal Sect campaign against Confucianism to seize Mianchi Academy’s stone stele. Its sect master nevertheless expects no direct rescue when the academy retaliates 164.

Mines, Medicines, and Labor

  • Resource ownership: Discoverers of an ice soul stone vein must report it to Taihua cultivators. Zhong Huan receives a token for future payments, but is threatened with punishment against his family if the report proves false 48.
  • Profit skimming: Mountain sects withhold part of the Vigorous Martial Gate’s rightful mining share until Qingming orders Bai Jiu to recover the missing proceeds 55.
  • Forced labor: Refugees are driven into mining grounds controlled by Taihua and Guangling Commandery 30.
  • Prison labor and medicine testing: A prisoner describes Dantu Mountain’s mines, medicinal gardens, and pill-testing work as lethal destinations. Immortal Sect guards whip prisoners who react to his account 57.
  • Tribute to the Immortals: Big Black identifies the sects, Guardian Cities, and imperial families as instruments for extracting the Mortal Realm’s resources for the Immortals 171.

Recruitment and Sect Culture

Entry and Advancement Opportunities

  • Immortal Roots and aptitude: Recruitment favors cultivation talent. Jinshan attributes his selection for Longcheng Peak to his outstanding Immortal Root 64.
  • Wealth does not guarantee admission: In the opening chapter, Lü Bufan recounts reports of wealthy families spending over ten thousand taels without securing an audience with a recruiting immortal master 1.
  • Patronage: Qingming’s personal jade token grants Lü Bufan unusual access and prompts other disciples to treat him cautiously 86.
  • Restricted instruction: Taihua’s Three-Year Sect Competition offers successful entrants the right to seek enlightenment at the Mirror-Viewing Platform. Eligible attendants and outer disciples are admitted after Elder Mo broadens participation 136.
  • Martial Warriors’ standing: Many immortal masters regard Martial Warriors disdainfully, although Qingming and several other peak masters socialize with powerful martial attendants without reservation 137.

Factionalism and Dissent

  • Internal rivalry: Taihua’s Sect Leader, Sect Hall, Elder Hall, and individual peaks compete for influence. The narration describes factional division as normal for a sect that has endured over a thousand years 135.
  • Poor battlefield preparation: Elder Mo attributes Taihua’s heavy rebellion losses to disciples’ lack of practical combat experience 136.
  • Qingming’s criticism: He condemns disciples’ obsession with schemes and profit, contrasting it with Lü Bufan’s willingness to shoulder responsibility 116.
  • Individual exceptions: Lü Bufan explicitly recognizes Qingming, Jinshan, Jinshui, and Tianyu as upright members rather than treating every sect cultivator as corrupt 166.
  • Tianyu’s defense: He describes the Immortal Sects as a compromise between the Mortal and Immortal Realms, arguing that their oversight prevents a devastating war among Central Earth’s three kingdoms 166.

Military Assets

Cultivators and Void Boats

  • Hundreds of flying Immortal Sect cultivators of the Sixth Realm and above accompany the Twelfth Guardian City lord to Two Realms Village, carrying numerous magic treasures 13.
  • Void Boats serve as armed fleet assets. Taihua’s Elder Hall and Sect Leader control separate groups, illustrating that military strength is divided among internal factions 107.
  • Immortal patronage is not an unconditional guarantee of rescue: Mr. Mo cites the destruction of nine Liu Clan Void Boats by a Wild Spirit Land rogue cultivator without intervention from the Guardian Immortal 107.

Immortal Artifacts

  • Rare strategic treasures: Taihua and Heart Lake Reversed Water Island each possess an Immortal Sword; the Liu Clan has failed to obtain one despite cultivating favor with Immortals 101.
  • Tianxiu: Taihua’s sect-guarding Immortal Sword can destroy defenses far beyond its wielder’s apparent realm. Its deployment against the Golden Flower Sect also serves as a warning to the imperial court 123 124.
  • Maintenance: Immortal Artifacts deteriorate in the Mortal Realm. Tianxiu sustains itself by consuming the spirituality and essence of magical weapons, making the Sword-Nurturing Platform especially valuable 108 120.
  • Cost to wielders: Sword Slave warns that Immortal Swords erode their users into puppets. Zhou Mo explains that an Eighth- or Ninth-Realm Sect Hall elder could deliver a nation-destroying strike with Tianxiu, but would die afterward 109 140.

Immortal Grand Formations

  • The mountain-guarding Immortal Array is treated as a defining distinction between an Immortal Sect and an ordinary Mountain Gate 180.
  • These formations were bestowed by Immortals who descended in ancient times. Their greater purpose is suppression, and full deployment is exceptionally rare outside major wars 181 182.
  • Damage to the Northern Immortal Sect’s formation raises concern about both its defenses and a secret suppressed beneath Heavenheart Lake 180.
Taihua’s Heavenly Shuttle Killing Formation Documented Capacity
Two hundred years earlier Fired for thirty breaths, swept across two thousand li, killed over ten thousand enemies, and severely injured a perfected Ninth-Realm Corpse Demon progenitor 182.
Present condition Elder Mo estimates a maximum of twelve breaths. Its pursuit of Crouching Dragon demonstrates a lock that his extraordinary escape abilities cannot shake 182.
Wider deterioration Elder Mo links the sects’ desperate resource collection to their failing formations and reports that the Liu Sect’s array is deteriorating even more severely 182.

History and Major Conflicts

Two Realms Village and the Southern Borderlands Upheaval

Immortal Sect forces repeatedly probe Two Realms Village. During one confrontation, Big Black transforms and drives away the Twelfth Guardian City lord and hundreds of cultivators. Watchers later maintain positions outside Two-World Mountain’s deadly white mist, but fail to detect Lü Bufan’s departure 13 21.

The Southern Borderlands Upheaval begins with attacks on Taihua mines, affiliated sects, and government offices. After a colossal being from Two-World Mountain kills the descended Immortal Yunxia, rogue cultivators, Martial Warriors, and impoverished commoners join attacks on sect estates, storehouses, mines, and medicinal gardens 40.

The court and Immortal Sects swiftly suppress the upheaval and seize subordinate sect properties. Taihua and the Liu Clan suffer the heaviest losses; northern sect forces depart with captured wealth, while Bai Ye emerges as a counterweight the Sima Clan can use against the weakened southern powers 42 44.

Territorial Expansion

Following the suppression, Immortal Sect and court forces occupy the devastated region around Two-World Mountain. They later push farther into the mountain despite increasingly frequent appearances by demonic fiends 48 136.

In Great Yunmeng Marsh, Luo Wuya warns that the sects and court intend to kill rogue cultivators for military credit and seize the marsh’s outskirts. By Lü Bufan’s later account, the Immortal Sects have occupied most of the marsh 93 173.

Northern Immortal Sect Crisis

The arrest of Zhao Mu and Mo Bai exposes the Punishment Hall’s involvement with Water Cloud Terrace. Spectators regard its harsh response as inconsistent with the Northern Immortal Sect’s normally tolerant treatment of minor offenses by outsiders 155.

The gathering of twelve Immortal Children introduces another uncertainty. Xuanjing says they will welcome Twelve Immortal Weapons, but Sect Leader Xuandanzi questions Qiuyu’s assumption that those weapons will be distributed to the existing sects 172 174 177.

Attacks on the Northern Immortal Sect expose a failure in its Grand Formation. Its leaders debate whether the problem is local or affects all Immortal Sect arrays; Taihua’s subsequent deployment reveals that its own formation has also weakened dramatically 180 181 182.

Relationships

  • Upper Realm Immortals — Overlords and patrons. They grant investiture and strategic assets, while the sects enforce their authority and collect Mortal Realm resources 55 56 171.
  • Imperial families — Partners, dependents, and rivals. The courts cooperate with the sects in suppression campaigns but also maneuver to reduce their influence 40 124 175.
  • Guardian Cities — Allied centers of recruitment, resource collection, surveillance, and military enforcement 13 22 57.
  • Vigorous Martial Gate — A subordinate martial organization compelled to accept sect assignments and negotiate for mining profits; Qingming offers it personal protection 55 57.
  • Lü Bufan — A Taihua attendant whose experiences with exploitation, factional struggles, and upright cultivators leave him distrustful of the institution without rejecting every member 115 166 173.
  • Wild Spirit Land — A major adversary and refuge for cultivators escaping sect domination. Acceptance of its allegiance can permanently brand a person a fiend in Central Earth 93 182.
  • Kongkong Mountain — A persecuted community whose ancestors suffered a calamity; the Immortals and Immortal Sects forbid its descendants from openly establishing a sect 170.
