As in every urban superhero movie, the police sirens only sounded in the distance after everything was over.
Chu Ge drove the battered Haval back, thinking that the police might have arrived late because of a tacit understanding with Zhong Yi. Otherwise, police had been keeping watch in secret at the hospital, yet none had followed after the move. There was a very good chance it was deliberate, to make things easier.
When he saw who was leading them, Chu Ge became even more certain of his guess.
Because the person in charge was actually Gu Ruoyan.
"President Gu, what are you doing here?" Chu Ge asked in surprise. "Aren't you an official in the Capital?"
"My work often takes me around the country. I only arrived in Magic City a couple of days ago... I just happened to be here for this." Gu Ruoyan looked at the Haval's shattered windshield and the driver's headrest, which had been slashed to shreds, something meaningful in her eyes. "Were you attacked outside?"
Chu Ge laughed it off. "Yeah, they were vicious. Good thing I got away fast. Domestic cars really are great."
Zhong Yi's cheek twitched.
Fuck, my car...
Gu Ruoyan gave Chu Ge a long look, but did not press him. She merely extended a hand for a handshake. "This may involve matters overseas, and it could be connected to some cases we've been investigating in the Capital, so I'm taking over for now."
It felt a little like getting special treatment through connections. He did not know whether Gu Ruoyan would make any connection to his fight outside or the possible discovery of someone burned to death, but judging by her manner, she probably would not dig into it.
Was this what they meant by having friends in high places?
