Power Progression
Moon Shadow’s development is described through changes in her ability rather than named cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Awakening of shadow manipulation | 39 | As a lonely child, she talked to shadows until they seemed to understand her. She estimates that her ability began three or four years before this conversation. |
| Shadows become capable of harming others | 39 | Repeated combat strengthened shadows that initially could not hurt anyone. Practicing control also helped, but more slowly than fighting. |
| Demonstrated Shadow Blade and binding techniques | 112 | Pierces Anvil’s defense with a Shadow Blade and restrains him with ribbon-like shadows. |
| Combined shadow restraint and close-quarters combat | 124 | Envelops Chu Ge in tree shadows, manipulates his own shadow to seize his feet, and combines shadow spikes with physical exchanges. Qiu Wuji assesses Chu Ge at roughly one-third of her level at this time. |
| Shadow-based sensory awareness | 348 | Detects Chu Ge approaching despite his deliberately quiet movement and explains that surrounding shadows convey voices to her. By this point, military training has made her a disciplined combat operative. |
| Further growth through training | 372 373 | Acknowledges stronger shadow attacks than during her earlier spar with Chu Ge, though Matsuda’s metal transformation remains a serious obstacle. Uses armed shadow decoys and rapid attacks to kill multiple gunmen. |
| Amplification within the world of Chu Ge’s novel | 421 | The world’s much denser spiritual energy greatly increases her shadow power. The narration compares a destructive power of one hundred in the Mortal World to at least one thousand there; an opponent considers her displayed strength far beyond S-class. This is an environmental enhancement rather than a newly assigned official rating. |
| Elite Special Forces combatant | 567 | Systematic state training and numerous independent missions establish her among the best of Chu Jiangliu’s Special Forces. Her Shadow Blade eventually cuts through Mizuno Shu’s air-pressure defense and cleaves him in two. |
Background / History
Moon Shadow had no one to play with as a child and began talking to shadows for company. She does not explain what happened to her family or friends, remaining silent when Qiu Wuji asks 39.
She earned her living in the Underground Boxing Arena beneath the Divine Miracle Nightclub. Although her high win rate attracted many supporters, the venue kept most of the money, and her share could fail to cover treatment after an injury. She continued because she believed she knew how to do nothing else 34.
She preferred payment by match victories to becoming a bodyguard or assassin: she distrusted employers and did not want to take orders. Qiu Wuji nevertheless concluded that someone was skimming her earnings and exploiting her belief that the arrangement was fair 39.
Her repeated victories distorted the arena’s betting odds, giving its operators a strong financial incentive to make her lose. Zhang Xiaoren first tried to bribe her and, after she refused, employed Wall-Passer to follow her and prepare interference outside the ring. Zhang Qiren subsequently took over the operation and arranged the rigged match that nearly killed her, without recognizing her as the neighbor he admired 53.
After Gu Ruoyan brought her into government service, Moon Shadow underwent induction training and reported that everyone treated her well. Her probationary assignment was a month assisting the Nanjiang police with the Wang Family case 94 120.
She later completed that assignment and prepared to return to the Capital to become a full member. Her former apartment was eventually rented by Chu Ge and Qiu Wuji to expand their living and cultivation space 152 170.
By the later operations, she has completed many missions independently and become one of the strongest members of the Special Forces under Chu Jiangliu. The narration suggests that her military rank is probably substantial, but does not specify it 567.
Appearance
- Usually wears black clothing, including during her later fight to protect Zhang Qiren from Mizuno Shu 38 41 566.
- Wears a demon-face mask when entering the underground arena 34.
- After her rigged match, her face and clothes are bloodstained; Qiu Wuji cleans them, but her pale complexion and bloodless lips still reveal her injuries 39.
- By her island assignment, Chu Ge notices that her formerly pale, unsmiling demeanor has changed and that she smiles much more readily 348.
Personality
Moon Shadow is initially quiet, deeply withdrawn, and unaccustomed to speaking with others. She explicitly says she trusts no one; Qiu Wuji recognizes that she relies on the shadows around her rather than people. Even after being rescued, her willingness to talk does not amount to ready trust 39.
She values independence and dislikes taking orders. Despite her guardedness, she thanks her rescuers, offers to move away to avoid causing them trouble, and allows Qiu Wuji to investigate her ability 39.
Gratitude remains an important motive after she enters government service. She repeatedly tries to fulfill her promise to Qiu Wuji and requests the island assignment partly to repay both rescuers. She also explains that she did not arrest Zhang Qiren before his departure because she feared he might blame Chu Ge and Qiu Wuji for his downfall 120 123 348.
Her new environment makes her more sociable, cheerful, and perceptive. She attributes the change to friendly teammates and Gu Ruoyan’s sisterly care. At the island outpost, she smiles brightly, teases Chu Ge, and recognizes that the staffing arrangements reflect personal trust as well as official business 348.
Military training also changes her approach to authority and cooperation. She follows operational orders, avoids prying into secrets outside her assignment, and asks teammates for help when a situation exceeds her abilities rather than treating self-reliance as an absolute 348 417.
Although she does not hate the boxing ring itself, which once provided her livelihood, she despises the surrounding environment for normalizing bloodshed and turning people into cruel, animalistic spectators and operators 154.
Her feelings toward Zhang Qiren are complicated by the conflict between his attempt on her life and his later efforts to protect her. She initially insists that his assistance does not erase his wrongdoing, but also questions whether she has treated him too coldly. After his confession, she cannot untangle the gratitude and resentment in her heart 375 422.
By the end of the Japan operation, she can acknowledge his contribution directly and offers practical help rebuilding his organization as repayment, rather than responding only with hostility 567.
Abilities & Skills
Shadow Manipulation
Moon Shadow can control shadows and make them physically affect opponents. The official roster classifies her ability as suited to combat and assassination, assigns it S potential, and lists its development level as unknown 37.
- Curls an opponent’s shadow around his supporting foot and pulls it backward, setting him up for a counterattack 37.
- Spectators refer to a Shadow Blade, but she does not demonstrate it during the depicted arena match. She later demonstrates it against Anvil and numerous other opponents 38 112 154.
- Improves through repeated control practice, with combat producing faster growth 39.
- Qiu Wuji considers the gift exceptionally powerful and admits that she cannot control shadows in the same way 39 45.
- Forms shadows into ribbon-like restraints, enveloping masses, spikes, and blades. She can bind and move a captured person or coordinate shadow attacks with hand-to-hand fighting 112 124.
- Uses a target’s own shadow for surprise attacks, including raising a drug lord’s shadow behind him and cleaving him before he notices the danger 141.
- Can deploy a moving shadow as both a decoy and a lethal weapon, drawing gunfire toward an apparent escape route before using it to cut a guard’s throat 372.
- Commands large numbers of shadow blades simultaneously; in the spiritually dense world of Chu Ge’s novel, she unleashes thousands of blades and can avoid Zhang Qiren’s vital points even when he is caught in their path 421.
Qiu Wuji and Chu Ge eventually develop a set of Immortal Dao Mystic Arts based on shadow manipulation and place it in the Scripture Pavilion. Members of Qiu Wuji’s sect begin practicing that branch of techniques, although Qiu Wuji does not plan to learn it herself 123.
Shadow Travel
- Merges into shadows and travels through them to evade pursuit 39.
- Emerges only after checking that no one is following her 39.
- Initially cannot remain hidden in shadows for the entire journey home because her ability is not strong enough 39.
- Uses Shadow Escape to leave after sparring with Chu Ge 124.
- Can remain concealed near an operation as a hidden guard. During the confrontation with Miyamura Jiro, she waits unnoticed in the shadows near the seabed until Chu Ge sends her aboard the ship 368.
- Her movement is not unrestricted teleportation or wall-passing. During the cabin battle, Matsuda identifies doors and windows as routes that can be blocked, and her moving shadow can leave a visible path 372.
Shadow-Based Perception
Moon Shadow explains that shadows are everywhere and tell her the voices around them. At the island outpost, she detects Chu Ge’s approach even though he deliberately holds his breath, and she has already heard the nearby discussion about introducing her to the other guards 348.
Close-Quarters Combat
- Uses agile dodges, rolls, backward bends, and kicks alongside her supernatural ability 37 38.
- Combines a shadow-assisted trip with a back kick to her opponent’s spine 37.
- Qiu Wuji judges that her arena-honed physical skills alone could kill the inexperienced Chu Ge in a single move 45.
- Employs deflections, wrist escapes, hand strikes, and coordinated shadow attacks in her spar with Chu Ge. Qiu Wuji recognizes that her final hand strike could have been replaced with a lethal Shadow Blade attack to his throat 124.
- Her combat experience and later systematic training make her especially effective at combining stealth, misdirection, and lethal attacks against multiple armed enemies 372 373 567.
Training, Fieldwork, and Limitations
- Receives government induction and military discipline training, later carrying out numerous missions independently 94 348 567.
- Participates in suspect retrieval, criminal investigations, shipboard raids, covert protection, and overseas operations 112 139 141 368 503.
- Can leap through the air but cannot hover or fly freely 416.
- Requires actual shadows to use her ability. Complete darkness without a light source deprives her of usable shadows, rather than strengthening her power 417 421.
- Her slashing attacks do not effectively dispose of a vengeful spirit that simply reforms after being split; Qin Feier helps purify it 417.
- At the time of the Matsuda operation, she considers his metal transformation a natural counter because her attacks lack the sheer force needed to pierce his transformed vital areas. Her later victory over Mizuno Shu demonstrates growth against a different form of defense, not a stated removal of this specific limitation 372 567.
- Her effectiveness depends heavily on her own agile fighting techniques as well as shadow control. A formation that nullifies personal combat power while leaving esper abilities intact is therefore still a serious threat to her 418.
- Her power increases dramatically in the world of Chu Ge’s novel because of its much denser spiritual energy 421.
Night-Shining Pearl
Chu Ge gives Moon Shadow a Night-Shining Pearl during the North Sea expedition so that she can create shadows in otherwise unlit surroundings. She later uses it to restore her ability when an enemy darkens the sky 417 421.
The pearl is also a simple magic treasure: channeling mental power into it activates a protective shield capable of stopping ordinary blades and bullets. Chu Ge later gives Zhang Qiren a similar pearl and explains that both recipients are comparatively weak in defense 427.
Relationships
- Qiu Wuji — Neighbor and rescuer. Protects her, treats her injury, and hopes to study her shadow powers. She also considers bringing Moon Shadow into her fictional world, but Chu Ge explains that writing a counterpart would not transport the original person 39 40. Moon Shadow regards her as a poised older sister, repeatedly offers to honor her promise of assistance, and seeks her help investigating the Wang Family’s drug suppliers. Later, she turns to Qiu Wuji for advice about Zhang Qiren 123 139 375. Moon Shadow eventually does enter the world of the novel during the North Sea affair, where Qiu Wuji observes the aftermath of Zhang Qiren’s confession 421 422.
- Chu Ge — Neighbor who accompanies Qiu Wuji during her rescue and helps bring her home. Moon Shadow mistakenly identifies him as Qiu Wuji’s husband 39. She spars with him, helps assess his apparent esper ability, and considers him her only familiar face remaining in Nanjiang when she prepares to leave 124 152. She later requests an assignment under his command to repay him and Qiu Wuji, serves as his hidden guard, and receives a protective Night-Shining Pearl from him 348 368 417 427.
- Gu Ruoyan — Government official who seeks her out after reviewing her S-potential roster entry. Shows her identification, reassures her that she has not come to arrest her, and leaves with her 37 41 42. Gu brings her into government work and treats her like a younger sister. Although they belong to different departments, Gu prefers working with her and uses her as combat support 94 307 348.
- Zhang Qiren — Former neighbor and underground arena operator who has a crush on her without initially knowing that she is Moon Shadow. He arranges the match that nearly kills her, and learning her identity devastates him 53. Moon Shadow initially hates him and wishes him dead, but lets him leave Nanjiang to avoid creating trouble for her rescuers 94 120. His later attempts to protect her, repeated injuries, and confession leave her emotionally conflicted 372 373 375 418 421 422. During the final Japan operation, she protects him from Mizuno Shu and offers to help restore his organization. He declines, abandons the Black Dragon Society, and asks for a chance to get to know her again after returning to writing; her acceptance of a romantic relationship is not established 566 567.
- Wall-Passer — Pursuer who follows her to her apartment floor but enters Chu Ge’s home instead. His testimony supplies the authorities with information about her 28 37. Zhang Xiaoren hired him after she refused to throw a fight 53.
- Underground arena boss — Offers her one million to lose a match. After she escapes the rigged fight, he orders operations suspended and vows to find another way to kill her 38. Zhang Qiren later admits responsibility for arranging the rigged match after taking over the operation 53.
- Zhang Xiaoren — Initially tries to profit from engineering her defeat and hires Wall-Passer after she refuses his bribe. When he later reopens underground boxing, Moon Shadow and Chu Ge help bring about his arrest 53 154.
- Wu Xiuyun — Government superior whom Moon Shadow addresses as Director Wu. Orders her to take Golden Arrow Man into custody and tells her that she will become a full member upon returning 142. Moon Shadow also reports observations about Chu Ge’s spatial abilities to her 380.
- Chu Jiangliu — Leader of the Special Forces in which Moon Shadow eventually becomes one of the leading combatants 567.
- Qin Feier — Teammate during the North Sea expedition. Helps purify a vengeful spirit that Moon Shadow cannot defeat through physical cutting 417.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rigged Arena Match and Rescue
Moon Shadow faces a burly fighter whose apparent gravity ability actually comes from outside assistance. She briefly turns the fight around with shadow manipulation, but her abdominal injury and renewed gravitational restraint leave her unable to escape. She realizes that the match is intended to kill her, not merely force a loss 37 38.
When the restraint disappears, she dodges the next punch and leaves the ring. Qiu Wuji and Chu Ge meet her in the elevator, using it as a diversion before Qiu Wuji teleports all three outside the nightclub 38 39.
Zhang Qiren later explains the scheme’s origins. Zhang Xiaoren had wanted to profit from her first major loss and retaliated when she refused to cooperate. After assuming control, Zhang Qiren arranged the rigged match himself. Chu Ge reveals that the masked fighter was the woman across the hall whom Zhang Qiren liked, leaving him devastated by the realization that he nearly killed her 53.
Departure with Gu Ruoyan
After returning home, Moon Shadow explains her ability and acknowledges that she cannot return to underground boxing. Her wound continues to ache despite Qiu Wuji’s treatment, and she spends the night awake 39 40.
Gu Ruoyan visits the following day, and Moon Shadow subsequently leaves with her. Before departing, she bows apologetically to Qiu Wuji, apparently regretting that she cannot fulfill her offer to help study shadow manipulation 41 42.
She subsequently enters government training. In a discussion of Zhang Qiren’s damage-reflecting ability, she expresses bitterness toward him and hopes his condition will weaken, while reporting that her own induction is going well 94.
Wang Family Case and Probationary Service
Moon Shadow joins the official operation against Anvil. Emerging from the shadows, she pierces his defense with a Shadow Blade and binds him for arrest. She also hands Chu Ge a box that her superiors have authorized him to study for one month 112.
She remains in Nanjiang for a month on a probationary assignment assisting with the Wang Family case. She hopes to use the opportunity to fulfill her promise to Qiu Wuji, but Chu Ge explains that further study of her ability is no longer needed 120.
When Chu Ge asks why she allowed Zhang Qiren to leave, she explains that she could have supplied evidence of his underground boxing operation and attempted murder. She refrained because she did not want him to hate the people who saved her, while maintaining that future crimes could still bring him into her custody 120.
At Qiu Wuji’s request, she spars with Chu Ge outside the city. His ability to break her restraints and exchange blows surprises her, but she continues to hold back from lethal attacks. Qiu Wuji ends the match after he is injured and places his strength at roughly one-third of Moon Shadow’s. Moon Shadow then leaves to report her assessment of his apparent blade-and-spear invulnerability to Gu Ruoyan 123 124.
Drug-Supply Investigation and Destruction of the Arena
After the Wang Family falls, its suppliers destroy their communications equipment and relocate. Moon Shadow asks Qiu Wuji to help recover clues, praising her as stronger than any esper Moon Shadow has encountered. Wu Xiuyun later reveals that inviting Qiu Wuji was also her own means of observing Qiu Wuji’s character 139 143.
Moon Shadow watches Qiu Wuji reconstruct clues through what the team takes to be a spacetime ability, then participates in the raid on a ship. She kills an armed drug lord through his shadow and evades an invisible attacker by disappearing into shadows herself. After Qiu Wuji and Wu Xiuyun defeat Golden Arrow Man, Director Wu orders Moon Shadow to take him into custody and promises her full membership upon their return 140 141 142.
With her probationary work finished, Moon Shadow prepares to return to the Capital. Before leaving, she asks Chu Ge to have a drink with her, calling him the only familiar face she has left in Nanjiang 152.
Their visit to the Divine Miracle Nightclub brings them into contact with the revived underground boxing operation. Zhu Mengmeng and Cai Zhijian provide access to the arena, and Chu Ge coordinates with Lin Wuyang’s police. Moon Shadow attacks Zhang Xiaoren, defeats the older man protecting him, and holds a Shadow Blade to his neck while police surround the venue 153 154.
Once the police intervene, she says goodbye to Chu Ge and disappears into the night 155.
Island Assignment and Life as an Operative
Moon Shadow continues to work with Gu Ruoyan despite their belonging to different departments. During the investigation of pianist Daniel Robin, she remains nearby in the shadows as combat support 307.
When Chu Ge takes charge of an island outpost, Gu Ruoyan assigns Moon Shadow to him as its principal combat operative. Moon Shadow reveals that she requested the posting because she wants to help him and repay him and Qiu Wuji 348.
Chu Ge is struck by her greater warmth and confidence. She credits her friendly teammates and Gu Ruoyan’s care, demonstrates her shadow-based awareness of surrounding conversations, and agrees to guard the surface while he dives. Her discipline also keeps her from investigating the seabed secret without authorization 348.
She later tells Chu Ge that, although she has never found much interest in watching a complete animated series, she intends to watch his adaptation all the way through. Their exchange reflects how far she has moved beyond her earlier isolation 350.
Matsuda Mission and Reunion with Zhang Qiren
During the confrontation with Miyamura Jiro, Chu Ge secretly orders Moon Shadow to board the ship, subdue Matsuda, protect the patriot aboard, and seize Matsuda’s bone fragment if it can be done safely 368.
She enters the cabin and immediately restrains Matsuda to prevent an apparent attack, only to discover that the man she has been sent to protect is Zhang Qiren. The shock briefly unsettles her, but Matsuda’s threats and metal transformation force her attention back to the mission 372.
Unable to easily penetrate Matsuda’s transformed defenses, she uses a shadow decoy and attacks his less-protected men instead. Zhang Qiren intervenes, provokes Matsuda into stabbing him, and uses his Causality Law ability and gunfire to kill him 372.
Moon Shadow eliminates the remaining ordinary members and attempts to treat Zhang Qiren’s wound. She is bewildered by his willingness to injure himself for her and by the contradiction between her earlier hatred and her duty to protect him 373.
On the return voyage, she asks Qiu Wuji whether she was wrong to speak so coldly to him. Qiu Wuji explains that he acted because he could not bear to see her hurt. Moon Shadow insists that helping her does not erase the past, but her embarrassment and questions reveal that the encounter has affected her 375.
North Sea Expedition and Confession
Moon Shadow joins Chu Ge, Qiu Wuji, Gu Ruoyan, and Qin Feier in the North Sea expedition. The environment exposes several weaknesses: she cannot truly fly, physical slashes do not destroy a reforming spirit, and the unlit passage leaves her without shadows to manipulate. Chu Ge supplies a Night-Shining Pearl to create a usable light source 416 417.
The group discovers Zhang Qiren among the guards surrounding the restrained Black Tortoise. Gu Ruoyan reads his mind for information about the enemy formation, but his repeated concern for Moon Shadow’s safety embarrasses her in front of the team. His thoughts also reveal that the formation nullifies personal power while leaving esper abilities and technology usable 418.
After the outsiders are transported into the world of Chu Ge’s novel, Moon Shadow fights Japanese opponents alongside Zhang Qiren. The dense spiritual energy greatly amplifies her shadows. When an enemy darkens the sky, she uses the pearl to recreate shadows and continue attacking 421.
Zhang Qiren restrains one opponent so her blades can strike, taking wounds himself while she avoids his vital points. His allies shoot the remaining opponents, and he explains that they had been recruited to help him seize the Black Dragon Society. He then confesses his love to her while still bleeding 421.
Moon Shadow later listens as Qiu Wuji questions him on her behalf. Rather than reaching an immediate resolution, she remains unable to sort out the gratitude and resentment she feels 422.
Overseas Temple Investigation
Moon Shadow accompanies Chu Ge and Qiu Wuji in a country increasingly divided by coups, armed factions, and powerful espers. Acting as driver and local guide, she explains that the temple they are approaching is a stable but heavily armed regional power, and that earlier infiltrators have been killed 503.
She warns that even her shadow ability would have difficulty penetrating its defenses. When their vehicle stalls near the temple, Chu Ge tells her to contact her local allies and demonstrates his growing Fantasy Becoming Reality ability by repairing the wiring. He recalls the time when his own strength was measured as “One-Third Shadow,” contrasting it with the gods and Buddhas they now face 503.
She later accompanies the pair and the pet-sized sacred beasts around the city. She feeds bread to the White Tiger, helps Qiu Wuji name it Cotton Candy, and drives while Chu Ge gathers material about local customs 520.
Angel Descent Plan and Mizuno Shu
When Mizuno Shu attacks Zhang Qiren during the collapse of the summoning operation, Moon Shadow steps between them and meets him with her Shadow Blade. Zhang Qiren remains behind her while she fights, relying on her protection 566.
The collapse of the Magic Circle and Angel Descent Plan causes many combatants to flee. Moon Shadow ultimately overwhelms Mizuno Shu’s air-pressure defense and cleaves him in two, demonstrating the strength she has gained through systematic training and independent missions 567.
Afterward, she thanks Zhang Qiren and offers to remain in Japan to help rebuild the organization his actions have cost him. He refuses, asks her to help Azhong subdue the remaining enemies instead, and says he intends to leave Japan and return to writing. He hopes to move wherever she eventually settles so that they can get to know each other again 567.
