Ch. 41When the Evil God Came Knocking

Kallen and Dis visited the Molf estate to question businessman Molf about the deaths of Siso’s family. Dis punished Molf and Renee for violating Order, while Kallen confronted Molf with his family’s power.

  • Kallen chose Molf as their first suspect, and Dis agreed to visit the estate with him and Alfred.
  • Alfred used the Molf family’s youngest son to get them inside, then guided Kallen and Dis to Molf’s study.
  • Molf denied knowing Siso’s family but admitted that Editor-in-Chief Humil and Mr. Oka had conspired to choose a family to sacrifice for the demonstrations.
  • Renee tried to block Kallen and threatened to complain to the Order God Church, so Dis severed her arm for harming an ordinary person through church power.
  • Dis threw Molf across the study for employing an Otherworldly Demon to harm an ordinary person, and Kallen asked him, “Who is the Molf family?”

Ch. 42We're here

Kallen and Dis killed Mr. Molf and the editor-in-chief after exposing their crimes, while Alfred impersonated the dead editor-in-chief to learn that Mayor Ford, Legislator Haggett, and Mr. Oka were celebrating Sickson’s planned resignation. The group set out to join them, and Kallen also confined Puer for attacking an ordinary person.

  • Kallen confronted Mr. Molf over the murder of Siso’s family, and Alfred compelled Mr. Molf to eat cigarettes and cigars until he died.
  • Kallen spared Renee, ordered Young Master Molf to remove his father’s body, and left with Dis and Alfred for their next target.
  • The editor-in-chief took Molf Pharmaceuticals pills and listened as Alfred’s radio broadcast exposed the danger of using a journalist’s pen unjustly.
  • Kallen and Dis confronted the editor-in-chief, and Dis sent the pens he had thrown back into him, killing him.
  • Dis sentenced Puer to confinement for attacking Kallen, while Alfred answered a call from Mr. Oka and learned that Ford, Haggett, and Delis were celebrating Sickson’s planned resignation.
  • Alfred told Mr. Oka that he and Mr. Molf would arrive soon, as the group prepared to go to the celebration.

Ch. 43Prepare the Dishes

Kallen and Dis continued their campaign against Rojia City’s corrupt officials and the Otherworldly Demon Aloteta, while Kallen reflected on his growing appetite for uncovering the world’s darkness. Dis confronted the banquet’s guests under the Order Regulations, and Aloteta fled with Delis as Dis pursued him; Kallen stayed behind with Alfred to prepare spring rolls for Mr. Oka.

  • Kallen told Dis that the killings weighed on him but that he could overcome the shock, and he said the job was not finished while Rojia City still had corruption to expose.
  • Alfred bought a young man’s radio, then played music as he, Kallen, and Dis danced their way into the Glorious Hotel and waited outside the private dining room for Delis to finish her performance.
  • Dis entered the dining room and announced that Haggett, Oka, Ford, and Aloteta would be questioned under the Order Regulations.
  • Aloteta seized Delis and crashed through the window, prompting Dis to leap after them; Kallen explained that Aloteta had resisted arrest and taken Delis hostage.
  • Kallen and Alfred stayed behind with Oka and joked about using Haggett’s skin, Ford’s grass-filled head, and Oka’s grease to make the spring rolls Kallen had promised.

Ch. 44A rest!

Dis erased Aloteta with a Forbidden Spell and returned to the Immerlis Family badly affected by its side effects, while Kallen chose to pursue the power to protect his family. In the basement, Kallen awakened Siso and his family, who embraced instead of attacking their killers.

  • Aloteta invoked protections from several churches, but Dis erased him with Forbidden-Eternal Order-Erasure, leaving Delis alive but mad and damaged.
  • Dis returned to the crowded hearse with Kallen, and Kallen told him he wanted to follow his grandfather’s arrangements and learn to praise Order.
  • Dis coughed up blood from the Forbidden Spell’s side effects and said he would pray that the God of Order would not let him die.
  • Kallen went to the basement, reflected on Siso’s family and their killers, and used chainlike strands to awaken the four people in their coffins.
  • Siso and his family climbed out of their coffins and embraced each other rather than attacking Molf, Ford, Haggett, and Oka.

Ch. 45A Blind Date

Kallen learned that his grandfather had arranged a lunch meeting with Mina’s beautiful teacher, Miss Eunice, and prepared hot oil noodles while making fish with pickled greens for Puer. The chapter ended as Eunice arrived at the Immerlis Family home and Kallen and Puer watched her from the window.

  • Kallen woke late, learned that Dis had gone to inspect his Crematorium Society, and heard that Miss Eunice would visit for lunch.
  • Mary explained that Dis and Kallen’s grandfather had arranged the meeting and asked Kallen to host Eunice while the family was away.
  • Alfred offered to prepare romantic decorations and a car for Kallen, but Kallen sent him off to work on his radio show.
  • Kallen discussed Dis’s preparations and the Divine Descent Ritual with Puer, then cooked fish with pickled greens for her.
  • Kallen prepared hot oil noodles for lunch as Eunice arrived, and Puer and Kallen watched her approach the gate.

Ch. 46Ancestors

Kallen met Mina’s math teacher, Eunice, and shared a meal and conversation with her while Puer urged him to pursue her. After Eunice left, Puer recognized the emblem on her gift wallet and realized Eunice was descended from her family.

  • Puer described her ancient family and encouraged Kallen to have children with Eunice, whom she believed had exceptional spiritual sensitivity.
  • Kallen welcomed Eunice, corrected her mistaken assumptions about his age and education, and invited her to lunch.
  • Eunice and Kallen ate noodles together and talked for hours while Puer watched and pushed garlic toward Eunice.
  • Eunice gave Kallen a pink wallet for Mina and left in a taxi as evening approached.
  • Puer recognized the wallet’s emblem and shouted that Eunice was a descendant of her family.

Ch. 47Telling on someone

Kallen realized Dis was steering him toward Eunice and Vien as a possible safeguard, while Dis insisted that his own unforeseen trouble would not endanger the Immerlis Family. Dis then took Kallen to the hospital to bring Mr. Hoffen home, where an Order agent arrived to question him and Mr. Hoffen declared that the Evil God had already descended.

  • Puer revealed that Eunice was her descendant and admitted she had warned Kallen away because she feared his Evil God nature would bring misfortune upon her family.
  • Kallen handled Mrs. Moddes's funeral arrangements with care, then drew a diagram and concluded that Dis might be preparing a fallback for him through the Allen family in Vien.
  • Dis told Kallen to pursue a relationship with Eunice and gave him money for dates, while explaining that a personal problem of his own—not Kallen or the Divine Descent Ritual—was troubling him.
  • Dis said he hoped Kallen would go to Vien but would not deny his family the right to choose their own paths, then took Kallen to the hospital after hearing Mr. Hoffen had become critically ill again.
  • An Order agent entered Mr. Hoffen's hospital room to question him about an excessive Divine Descent Ritual, and Mr. Hoffen announced that the Evil God had already descended.

Ch. 48Grandpa's sacrifice

Dis and Kallen brought the dying Hoffen home after he revealed his friendship with Dis and gave Kallen his Cross necklace. Dis explained that Hoffen had helped arrange a second Divine Descent Ritual to protect the Immerlis Family, while the chapter ended by revealing that the God of Order had taken nothing from Dis as a sacrifice.

  • Dis and Kallen visited Hoffen in the hospital, where Hoffen urged Dis to kill Kallen and told him that Rasma had learned about the Divine Descent Ritual.
  • Hoffen and Dis reminisced about their friendship, and Hoffen admitted that he had envied Dis and worshiped him as well as the God of Principles.
  • Kallen told Hoffen that he had faith in truth without believing in gods, and Hoffen gave him his Cross necklace as a gift from his grandpa.
  • Hoffen confessed that he had secretly worshiped Dis and then died after Dis explained why he had withdrawn from the Order God Church.
  • Dis told Kallen that Rasma would conduct another Divine Descent Ritual in Bellwyn City, allowing Hoffen's testimony and Rasma's doomed attempt to clear suspicion from their family.
  • Dis and Kallen brought Hoffen home for his funeral, and Dis privately recalled that the God of Order had taken nothing from him in the ritual despite his readiness to sacrifice everything.

Ch. 49Taking off the mask

After burying Mr. Hoffen, Kallen headed to meet Eunice while Dis reflected on the Order Church’s control over his faith and family. Kallen arrived at Eunice’s home and met her mother, who began warming to him.

  • Kallen led Mr. Hoffen’s funeral, then left Dis at the grave and drove toward Rhine Street to meet Eunice.
  • Alfred explained that the Special Department had concealed the circumstances of recent political deaths, while Kallen suspected Dis wanted him to go to Vien because Dis was in trouble.
  • Dis told Mr. Hoffen’s grave that he feared the Order Temple would claim him and entangle his family, then said it was nearly time to take off the mask.
  • Kallen refused to bring Puer on his date, and Alfred took her home while Kallen continued alone.
  • Kallen reached Eunice’s house and spoke with her mother, who hid her growing approval of him behind teasing conversation.

Ch. 50God's Twilight

Kallen and Eunice spent a peaceful day together at an amusement park, a movie theater, and a restaurant, then parted on warm terms. After returning home, Kallen visited Piaget and saw Linda's painting of the Mad Pope, titled "God's Twilight," depicting the moment he denied the existence of the God of Light.

  • Kallen took Eunice on a date after reassuring Mrs. Jenny that he would bring her home safely before dark.
  • Kallen and Eunice toured the amusement park, crossed the haunted house together, and shared snacks and a comedy film.
  • Kallen and Eunice ate dinner by the river, embraced outside her home, and Eunice told Mrs. Jenny she felt comfortable with him.
  • Kallen visited Piaget, who showed him Linda's painting of the Mad Pope and explained its connection to the Church of Light's collapse.

Ch. 51The great... Evil God

Kallen spent the night at Piaget’s house, where a dream of a Female Giant creating a mural led him to identify the obscure Wall God Church. Linda’s gift of paints and letter left him wondering about her connection to the church and what she knew about his life.

  • Kallen and Piaget discussed religious paintings and psychological cases, then stayed up late talking over sandwiches and milk.
  • Kallen saw a human-skin-like figure descend the stairs, then Linda guided him to a guest room.
  • Kallen dreamed of a Female Giant creating a mural of a True God and woke beneath a ceiling mural resembling the canyon in his dream.
  • Kallen recalled the Wall God Church, whose followers painted religious murals and used their ashes as paint, and asked Piaget whether Linda belonged to the Berry Church.
  • Piaget confirmed Linda had followed the Berry Church, and Kallen left with a gift box of paints and a letter from Linda addressed to him as the Great Lord Evil God.

Ch. 52Oh, darling, of course!

Kallen realized Linda was the powerful Otherworldly Demon planning a Divine Descent Ritual to summon the Wall God Church’s True God, but chose not to warn Piaget because doing so could endanger his family. After finding Piaget’s letter, he learned Piaget had willingly gone to Bellwyn City to support Linda’s final wish.

  • Kallen suspected Linda had been a Wall God Church follower and wondered how she had recognized him as an Evil God.
  • Kallen remembered that Linda planned to help Dis’s ritual and clear the Immerlis Family of suspicion, then returned to Piaget’s house when Piaget was missing.
  • Kallen found Linda’s mural depicting a Divine Descent Ritual and realized she intended to summon the Wall God Church’s True God.
  • Kallen decided not to pursue or warn Piaget because exposing the ritual could put his family in danger.
  • Mrs. Seymour gave Kallen a letter from Piaget, who wrote that Linda had asked whether he agreed to her leaving him forever and that he had answered, “Oh, darling, of course!”

Ch. 53Write a name

Kallen returned home after visiting Mrs. Seymour and told his family about his successful date with Eunice, while Puer discussed her family and their arranged-marriage history with him. Dis then asked Kallen to choose the church he disliked most and write its name on a bookmark, leaving Kallen to recognize the ominous parallel with a myth about Ankara.

  • Kallen returned home, rescued Aunt Mary from choking, and recounted his date with Eunice to his enthusiastic relatives.
  • Kallen told his aunts he had hugged Eunice twice, and Dis later told him to invite her to dinner with the family.
  • Puer confronted Kallen about dating her younger relative and asked him to treat her descendants in Vien as family; Kallen agreed if they welcomed him as family.
  • Dis said the Wall God Church was targeted by the Order God Church because its deity, Rilielsa, had angered the God of Order.
  • Dis gave Kallen a bookmark and instructed him to write down the name of the church he disliked most, reminding Kallen of a myth in which Ankara used a similar bookmark before a deity fell.

Ch. 54Propriety

Kallen courted Eunice, bought shoes, belts, and an umbrella with her, and invited her to dinner with his family. After Eunice gave her mother the purple bookmark from Kallen’s grandfather, Mrs. Jenny recognized its significance and insisted on accompanying Eunice to the visit the next day.

  • Kallen waited outside the school, but Mina led Lunt and Chris away to take the tram while he continued waiting for Eunice.
  • Kallen took Eunice shopping, let her choose three pairs of shoes and two belts, and kissed her after she bought him an umbrella.
  • Kallen and Eunice shared dinner, and he told her he would cook for himself even if he lived in Vien before inviting her to his family’s home the next day.
  • Kallen kissed Eunice good night outside her house, and Mrs. Jenny teased her about how quickly their relationship was progressing.
  • Eunice gave Mrs. Jenny the purple bookmark from Kallen’s grandfather, and Mrs. Jenny dropped to her knees before it.
  • Mrs. Jenny decided to accompany Eunice to Kallen’s house the next day and told her she could stay overnight if she wished.

Ch. 55Hello

Kallen visited No. 128 and learned how Miss Molly came to live there before Alfred arrived with ingredients for hot pot. Later, Kallen brought Eunice home to meet Dis, where Mrs. Jenny entered the study first and immediately knelt before him.

  • Kallen heard Miss Molly explain that she had once lived at No. 128 with her family and that Alfred had helped her settle there after her death.
  • Alfred arrived, and Kallen, Alfred, and Miss Molly ate hot pot before Kallen and Alfred returned home.
  • Kallen went to Eunice's House to escort her to dinner, while Alfred frightened the Old Maid and stopped her from entering the house.
  • Kallen, Eunice, and Mrs. Jenny arrived at 13 Mingke Street, where Kallen explained that Dis had asked to meet Eunice alone.
  • Mrs. Jenny entered Dis's study ahead of Eunice, then fell to her knees and greeted him in a trembling voice.

Ch. 56The Falcon

Dis and Mrs. Jenny discussed Kallen and Eunice’s arranged marriage, while Kallen agreed to return to Vien with Eunice. Puer worried the Allen Family might mistreat Kallen, but Dis said the family would bear the consequences if it wronged him.

  • Puer grew angry that the Allen Family had sent Mrs. Jenny instead of its senior members to discuss the marriage, and Dis told her the family was unworthy of his grandson.
  • Kallen and Eunice talked privately, shared an intimate moment, and agreed they would go to Vien together and ride horses by the river.
  • Mrs. Jenny presented a bookmark bearing the name Raphael, and Dis destroyed it before deciding they would use the Order God Church’s coordinates in York City.
  • Dis instructed Mrs. Jenny to protect Kallen in Vien and warned that the Allen Family could openly end the engagement if it wished, but must not wrong him.
  • After Mrs. Jenny left, Puer urged Dis to choose another family, fearing the Allen Family would eventually mistreat Kallen.
  • Dis called Kallen a falcon rather than a chick sheltered beneath his wings and said the Allen Family would bear the consequences if it wronged him.

Ch. 57Rasma

Rasma reviewed Simon’s report criticizing Dis’s handling of deaths in Rojia City, then sought to calm his emotions by revisiting Mine Street and examining its people through a childhood perspective. He discovered that Rot’s family had been driven to die by poison, hanging, and falls, and concluded that they had not been the intended victims.

  • Rasma dismissed Simon’s report as insufficient to harm Dis and told Simon to keep it for possible later use.
  • Rasma walked through Mine Street and used a swinging dagger to restore his inner Order and broaden his perception.
  • Rasma saw Rot and his family with traces of color, then perceived that Rot should have died from poisoning and his wife and mother from other causes.
  • Rasma learned that Rot’s family had all died by apparent suicide in one night, including his daughter Sarah, who had fallen from a building.
  • Rasma returned to himself, listened to the pastry-shop woman describe the family’s deaths, and said they had not been the intended victims.

Ch. 58The circus

Kallen took his family and Eunice on a picnic before they were due to leave for Vien, where he hoped to explore his grandfather’s forbidden abilities. At the circus that evening, Rasma sensed that its owner was a Bewitching Otherworldly Demon and killed the Chasean husband who interrupted him.

  • Kallen drove Eunice and the children to a riverside picnic, where Alfred threatened a baron who insulted Kallen and Eunice.
  • Kallen and Eunice talked about their future and their past ambitions, then shared a quiet moment together while Mina turned away.
  • At dusk, Kallen led the family into the crowded circus grounds while Alfred watched over the children.
  • Rasma rested in a Chasean woman’s tent and saw a little Otherworldly Demon with Succubus Eyes and the circus’s owner, a Bewitching Otherworldly Demon.
  • When the woman’s husband entered the tent, Rasma killed him.

Ch. 59Fury!

Kallen attended the Kaqiluo Circus with Eunice and the children, where a performance by the drowned, reanimated Mandila drew him into her memories and despair. After Kallen silently wished the magician dead, Mandila pulled him into the water tank and drowned him, then thanked Kallen.

  • Kallen bought VIP tickets for the group, and they watched the circus begin with a song, acrobatics, and a lion act.
  • Alfred investigated a disturbance outside and met Rasma, who trapped him with Order-Cage but released him after learning he served Dis; Rasma said a man had insulted the Order God Church, and Alfred agreed to handle the corpse.
  • During a water-tank act, Kallen recognized that Mandila was a corpse and heard her describe being drowned repeatedly by the ringmaster, the magician, and the master who had bought her from her parents.
  • Kallen experienced Mandila's suffocation and despair from inside the tank's perspective, then recovered in Eunice's arms as the magician opened the tank and Mandila emerged.
  • After Kallen silently told Mandila to die, she dragged the magician into the tank and held him underwater while the audience cheered, then thanked Kallen.

Ch. 60What a Rush!

Alfred recognized that Kallen had spoken an Evil God's curse during a deadly circus act, and Kallen hurried Eunice and the children home before the lucky draw could draw them into danger. The next morning, Mandila's corpse arrived at Kallen's house, where it unexpectedly sat up and grabbed the stretcher wheels.

  • Alfred returned to the big top, saw black vapor coming from Mandila, and realized Kallen had cursed someone in the language of the hymn.
  • Kallen led Eunice and the children out of the circus, and Alfred kept the group together when a lucky draw stirred up a crowd.
  • Kallen drove the children home, took Eunice home, and later went to bed after the circus brought back memories of being trapped underwater.
  • Kallen learned that Dis had gone to church and helped Ron unload two corpses from the Hearse.
  • Mandila's corpse sat up on the stretcher and grabbed its wheels while Ron praised Kallen for holding it steady.
