Background / History

Camille’s parents died in a man-made tragedy when she was ten. She subsequently lived with her uncle, who paid only part of her living expenses and tuition and showed little interest in her welfare. Her aunt took her parents’ inheritance while accusing Camille of freeloading and treating her like a maid; her cousin shared her aunt’s spiteful temperament 10.

Despite this upbringing, Camille earned admission to the University of Westminster and a full scholarship. She stayed in the university library until eight each evening to avoid her aunt and cousin. At her introduction, she described herself as having no friends and kept her unusual perceptions secret 10.

Professor Phoenix was the first person whose mind Camille could not observe. When approached for an explanation, Phoenix identified her gift as Synesthesia, but dismissed her as a “Muggle with no bloodline” and offered no further guidance 10.

On February 9, 1589 of the Terra Calendar, an owl delivered a letter asking whether Camille craved knowledge. The letter answered its own question, burned into a magical doorway, and the owl shoved her through it into Three Portlands. There, Camille attempted to probe Xia Xiu’s mind; a piercing mental roar interrupted her and caused intense pain. Instead of retaliating, he helped her up and explained that probing another thaumaturgist without permission was taboo 10.

Appearance

  • Height: 1.68 meters 10.
  • Build: Curvaceous, with a figure noticeable even beneath loose mage’s robes 15.
  • Initial appearance: Wore large, old-fashioned glasses and a hairstyle that obscured her face 15.
  • Later appearance: Changed to a single braid draped over her right shoulder and small, round glasses that emphasized her intellectual appearance. Xia Xiu initially struggled to recognize her after the change 36 44.
  • College clothing: Wears mage’s robes and Deer College’s uniform 15 44.

Personality

Camille is initially shy and easily embarrassed, particularly around Xia Xiu. She frequently blushes, stammers, or struggles to explain herself. Her attempt to offer him lecture notes becomes mortifying when she realizes she has admitted to watching him during class—and then discovers that lecture recordings are already available through the lineage system 10 12 15.

Her fear of unfamiliar supernatural beings gives way quickly to curiosity. Initially frightened by Ushas and a ghost cafeteria worker, she is soon chatting happily with her roommate and enthusiastically discussing the floating city, supernatural education, and lineages 11 12 13 14.

She is studious and practical: she takes detailed lecture notes, reads parapsychology books independently, and researches club requirements and competition for grade-point resources. As club president, she combines that preparation with growing assertiveness, including a mischievous demonstration of Synesthesia when Muji questions her qualifications 15 22 23 42.

Camille also has a sentimental, imaginative side. She names Cinderella after a childhood favorite story, hesitates to eat lifelike cat-shaped pastries, and imagines a tragic romance-novel history when Xia Xiu says he has no family. Her concern does not become possessiveness: she ultimately accepts that, as his friend and club leader, she can advise him without controlling his decisions 13 41 46 47.

Abilities & Skills

Synesthesia

Camille possesses Synesthesia as an innate trait, rather than a technique acquired through lineage study. It links different senses and allows her to experience another being’s perceptions 13 23.

  • Mental perception: Can read emotions and thoughts; demonstrates this by repeating Muji’s unspoken doubts aloud 10 42.
  • Unusual sight: Has seen otherwise inexplicable things since discovering her gift at fourteen 10.
  • Animal sensing: Unlike ordinary Mind Reading, Synesthesia is not ineffective against low-intelligence creatures. This makes it relevant to her cryptozoology studies and proposed animal research 23.
  • Certification potential: Believes the trait will allow her to take the Animal Communication Certificate examination; she has not yet obtained the certificate in the supplied chapters 46 47.
  • Limits and risks: Cannot read Professor Phoenix’s mind, and her initial attempt on Xia Xiu causes painful backlash. Synesthesia is generally less discreet than Mind Reading, although training improves Camille’s ability to use it covertly 10 23 42.
  • Defensive countermeasures: Muji and Lifenel respond to her demonstration by adjusting their lineage loudness. Camille withdraws her perception rather than remaining exposed to their reverberations 42.

Thaumaturgical Perception

  • While holding a Blue Book, senses the weave of Professor Laugen’s demonstrated Fireball and answers his question about its sound characteristics, earning his approval 18.

Water Thaumaturgy

  • Forms a ball of water in her right hand, braces that arm with her left hand, and launches it as a forceful projectile 39.
  • Her practical assessment records 50 spirits of EVE released, with volume, timbre, and frequency adjustment times of 1.02, 1.53, and 1.2 seconds, respectively 39.
  • Laugen praises her progress as a genuine beginner but notes unnecessary movements and incomplete proficiency 39.

Club Administration

  • Handles applications, recruitment, membership paperwork, and registration with the Deer College Think Tank 23 41 42 45.
  • Holds authority to approve members’ missions and grant access to the club’s dimensional interlayer 46 47.
  • Establishes a communal fund managed by the president, with transactions disclosed to members and expenditures open to questioning 47.

Equipment / Items

  • Cinderella — Her named AI sprite; reports lineage connection progress and provides dormitory guidance 13.
  • Blue Book — Held while she perceives the structure of Laugen’s Fireball demonstration 18.
  • Lecture notebook — Used to record introductory thaumaturgy lessons 15.
  • Clubroom key — A transparent card depicting a deer’s head with multicolored antlers. Glows near the clubroom entrance and serves as the token opening its dimensional interlayer 45.
  • Umbrella — Shares it with Xia Xiu when welcoming him back and accompanying him to club activities; later carries a bright yellow one 36 44.

Relationships

  • Xia Xiu / Xiu Abraham — Classmate, friend, and fellow club founder. Helps her understand Three Portlands and adjust to supernatural life. Her blushes, attention to his return, and efforts to arrange time together suggest romantic interest, but their explicitly stated relationship remains friendship 10 11 12 36 44 47.
  • Ushas — Roommate, best friend, and fellow founder. Their initial awkwardness becomes an affectionate, teasing friendship; Camille frequently stops Ushas from revealing embarrassing remarks about her feelings 13 14 22 39 40.
  • Muji — Club recruit who initially doubts her suitability as president. Accepts her leadership after she demonstrates Synesthesia by quoting his private thoughts 41 42.
  • Lifenel — Joins the club alongside Muji and helps identify the dimensional interlayer containing its assigned room 42 45.
  • Professor Phoenix — Former university professor who names her innate gift but dismisses her because she lacks a bloodline 10.
  • Professor Laugen — Thaumaturgy instructor who recognizes her perceptive talent and regards her as the leading first-year from Deer College’s own lineage 18 39.
  • Uncle, aunt, and cousin — Her household after her parents’ deaths; marked by neglect, financial exploitation, and harassment 10.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Overcomes her hesitation to order from a ghost cafeteria worker with encouragement from Xia Xiu and the worker herself 12.
  • Moves into Blackwood Dormitory with Ushas and begins adapting to supernatural coursework 13 14.
  • Welcomes Xia Xiu back at the Portal after his absence and walks with him to the dormitory boundary under her umbrella 36.

Founding the Mysterious Animal Research Club

  • Invites Xia Xiu to discuss forming a club with herself and Ushas. Explains that five members are required and that a new club offers first-years better access to grade points 22.
  • Proposes a club dedicated to protecting and studying mysterious animals, connecting its work to her Synesthesia and cryptozoology major 23.
  • Recruits Muji and Lifenel after earlier negotiations with prospective members fail over grade-point allocation. Plans activities largely around the House of Languages 41 42.
  • Secures Student Council approval and leads the members to their assigned clubroom in the Wonderful Science District, opening its hidden dimensional entrance with the key 44 45.
  • Organizes equipment funding, prepares to obtain animal-communication certification, and grants all members token-free access to the clubroom 46 47.

Black Demon Hound Mission

  • Initially opposes Xia Xiu’s request to feed the Black Demon Hound for one week after reading that its abilities could endanger both him and his family 46.
  • Warns that having no family would cause the hound’s first ability to act directly on him instead 47.
  • Ultimately authorizes the mission while urging caution, respecting the limits of her authority over a friend’s choices 47.
