Love tribulation awakened; not a stated realm breakthrough 316 After a thousand years of practicing the Enchanting Technique without awakening her love tribulation, Cui Jiuyang’s refusal to exploit her compromised state broke through her emotional defenses.

Background

Li Mingyue grew up and cultivated at Full Moon Pool under Granny Full Moon. The pool held almost all her memories, and she remained deeply attached to it after leaving. Although she had possessed a human form for centuries, her secluded life in the mountain forests left her with little experience of ordinary society 286 289 306 307.

Granny taught her the Flowers in the Mirror, Moon in the Water art and introduced her to the Demon Soul Cocoon method. Full Moon Pool’s harmonious relationships between master and disciples were notable enough that even Hu Seventeen openly envied her upbringing 281 286 297.

Appearance

  • Human form: A radiant, mature beauty with brows compared to distant ink-dark mountains, eyes compared to autumn waters, and a naturally dignified bearing. Her true appearance is described as more beautiful than her Jiang Xiao'e disguise 280.
  • Hair and complexion: Long hair and exceptionally pale, delicate skin 291 318.
  • Rabbit features: Dense spiritual energy can provoke an involuntary partial transformation. Beneath Full Moon Pool, she developed pink rabbit ears covered in soft white fur, one upright and the other half-drooping 295.
  • Jiang Xiao'e disguise: An alluring widow with a frail, sorrowful appearance 280.
  • Clothing and adornment: She transforms her clothes into a pale lotus-pink dress for a liner’s ballroom and later uses glossy, dark-red nails to attract Cui Jiuyang’s attention 309 318.

Personality

Li Mingyue is approachable and unpretentious. While traveling with a caravan, she sits with its ordinary members and eats from the communal pot rather than maintaining the distance expected of an “immortal.” Her curiosity makes markets, unfamiliar clothing, and fashionable social gatherings especially attractive to her 281 308 309.

She is softhearted toward suffering people. After learning what had happened to Xiaohua’s mother, she volunteers her own demon soul to help cure her. Her compassion coexists with fierce loyalty: she refuses to abandon the pursuit of Hu Seventeen after his attack on Granny Full Moon, even when the descent into Full Moon Pool exceeds her physical limits 292 315.

Her teasing confidence conceals little actual romantic experience. Despite practicing the Enchanting Technique for a thousand years, she had previously created illusion realms rather than experienced romance herself. Once her love tribulation awakens, she deliberately courts Cui Jiuyang, experimenting with a mature, seductive style while recognizing that excessive teasing might frighten him away 316 318.

She can be jealous without remaining hostile. She initially proposes that she and Bai Susu stand together because Ninth Lady holds a special place in Cui Jiuyang’s heart, but laughs and accepts Su Su’s answer that they should all stand with him 470.

Abilities & Skills

Enchanting Technique

A rabbit-demon art that Li Mingyue has practiced for a thousand years, using illusions and sensory temptation to affect others 280 316.

  • Her voice alone, heard through a wall while she assumed Jiang Xiao'e’s identity, once kept Cui Jiuyang awake all night 311 316.
  • At close range, the technique combines fragrance, voice, and carefully controlled movements; Cui Jiuyang struggles to retain clarity against it 316.
  • The Crane Feather’s purifying light interrupts its effects sufficiently for Cui Jiuyang to escape her grasp 316.
  • Her own demon soul can be affected by a rabbit soul’s lustful influence, causing her to use the technique while her judgment is compromised 315 316.

Illusions and Transformation

Li Mingyue practices Granny Full Moon’s Flowers in the Mirror, Moon in the Water art 281.

  • Assumes and dismisses the appearance of Jiang Xiao'e 280.
  • Alters her clothing by thought to imitate fashionable passengers aboard a liner 309.
  • Her training grants discernment against illusions, but she cannot see through Cui Jiuyang’s disguised appearance 281.
  • Can retract involuntarily manifested rabbit ears by circulating her demonic power 295.

Demon Soul Control and Divine Sense

Li Mingyue can release and control her demon soul independently of her body 315.

  • Identifies the foreign soul afflicting Xiaohua’s mother as a rabbit soul 315.
  • Under Cui Jiuyang’s guidance, sends her demon soul into the patient to displace the rabbit soul without damaging the woman’s own soul 315.
  • Uses divine sense for communication, observation, and maintaining a lock on Hu Seventeen during combat 291 298 315.
  • Detects the fox smell in Hu Seventeen’s residual blood aura 290.

Shell Artifact Combat

Li Mingyue uses the magical artifacts carried on her Seashell Bracelet for attack, defense, and practical work 283 284 334 336.

  • Enlarges a black shell into a shield or complete protective covering 284.
  • Spins a silvery-white shell into a cutting blade capable of cleaving attacking monsters 334.
  • Enlarges a shell to clear and transport rubble while Cui Jiuyang excavates a tunnel 336.
  • Deploys all the bracelet’s shell artifacts when assigned to guard Cui Jiuyang and Cui Chengshou 337.

Water-Avoidance and Spiritual Power

  • Maintains a Water-Avoidance Spell and guides Cui Jiuyang into Full Moon Pool 291.
  • Uses spiritual power to resist cold and collect Moonlight Dew 289 292.
  • Hollows out a boulder into a sheltered stone dwelling for the unconscious Cui Jiuyang 304.

Limitations

  • Deep-water endurance: Before her heavenly bestowal, approximately five hundred feet beneath Full Moon Pool was her unaided limit. Deeper down, she depended on Cui Jiuyang’s spiritual-power barrier to survive the pressure and cold 292 293.
  • Formation knowledge: Has never studied formations and cannot understand the principles of White Crane Manor’s maze; relies on Cui Jiuyang to navigate it 284.
  • Demon Soul Cocoon: Knows the method and its characteristics, but her cultivation had been insufficient to practice it when Granny taught her 286.
  • Ancient writing: Cannot read the Oracle Script inscription beneath Full Moon Pool 295.
  • Compulsion resistance: Seals her hearing to avoid the Holy Maiden’s trust-inducing innate ability rather than confronting it directly 321.

Equipment / Items

  • Seashell Bracelet — A regularly worn bracelet carrying multiple shell magical artifacts 283 334 337.

  • Silver bell — Recovered from a murdered demon’s belongings at Mount Heming; possesses considerable spirituality and is deployed against Hu Seventeen 297.

  • Cui Jiuyang — Junior brother, traveling companion, and eventual romantic partner within a shared household. His willingness to protect the world earns her admiration; his respect for her free choice awakens her love tribulation 304 316 470.
  • Bai Susu / Su Su — Fellow member of Cui Jiuyang’s household. Li Mingyue invites her to use “Elder Sister” rather than “Senior Sister”; they quickly become close, talking and sharing cosmetics 363 470.

  • Xiaohua’s mother — Patient whom Li Mingyue helps cure by using her demon soul to displace an intrusive rabbit soul 315.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Departure from Full Moon Pool

After an earlier confrontation involving her Jiang Xiao'e disguise, Li Mingyue formally introduces herself to Cui Jiuyang at Granny Full Moon’s instruction. Assigned to guide him to the Greater Khingan Range, she leaves reluctantly. Their initially awkward carriage journey becomes friendlier after she explains that the earlier seduction was an illusion 280.

During the journey, she helps restore the caravan travelers’ lost lifespan with medicine and exchanges information with Cui Jiuyang about Hu Seventeen, despite Granny’s instruction to avoid his affairs. She also explores markets and returns to the Greater Khingan Range in high spirits 280 281 282.

White Crane Manor and the Spiritual Vein Crisis

At White Crane Manor, Li Mingyue helps defend against a lingering soul’s spear attack and recognizes Danhu’s Mountain-Splitting Spear. She and Cui Jiuyang discover the dead attendants and Mister Danyang’s Demon Soul Cocoon, establishing the scale of the attack on the manor 284 286.

Their investigation leads back to Full Moon Pool. Li Mingyue guides the descent, gathers Moonlight Dew, and insists on continuing after reaching her endurance limit. Cui Jiuyang protects her through the deeper water, and they eventually confront Hu Seventeen within the frozen Spiritual Vein 290 291 292 293 296.

When their attacks cannot subdue Hu Seventeen, she keeps him occupied while Cui Jiuyang searches for a weakness. After narrowly surviving his attacks, she leaves to seek King Hanli’s aid. Following the crisis, heaven rewards her with immortal energy; she shelters the frozen Cui Jiuyang and watches over him until he recovers 298 300 304 305.

Southern Heaven and Divine Path Heaven

Li Mingyue chooses to continue with Cui Jiuyang toward Southern Heaven rather than return home. In Guangzhou, her assistance in curing Xiaohua’s mother exposes her to a rabbit soul’s influence. Cui Jiuyang’s refusal to take advantage of her afterward becomes the decisive moment in awakening her love tribulation 305 315 316.

She accompanies his investigation of Divine Path Heaven, including its guardian selection, the Book Repository, and the mission to Dafushan Mountain. There, she fights with her shell artifacts, helps excavate a passage to Cui Chengshou, and guards the two men during their work 318 323 325 334 336 337.

After Dafushan Mountain collapses, she assists the return to Qidao Mountain under disguise. During the confrontation with the awakened stone sages, she remains outside the hall and anxiously relies on the Cave Lords’ soul connection to confirm that Cui Jiuyang is still alive 338 341 346.

Shared Household

After the defeat of Divine Path Heaven’s traitors, Li Mingyue stays with Cui Jiuyang at Qidao Mountain. She quickly befriends Bai Susu, with the two spending days talking and exchanging cosmetics 361 363.

Later, she and Su Su welcome Ninth Lady into their household through a tea ceremony. Li Mingyue acknowledges her jealousy but accepts Su Su’s insistence that their loyalty should center on Cui Jiuyang rather than rivalry with one another 470.

Notable Quotes

“Hu Seventeen schemed against Full Moon Pool. How could I possibly let him go?” 292

“So, since you're going to Southern Heaven, I'll go with you.” 305

“We should all stand with the young master!”
Li Mingyue’s response to Su Su: “Well said. Jiuyang hasn't doted on you for nothing.” 470

Trivia

  • Retains her rabbit’s vegetarian habits after attaining human form. A roadside vegetable pancake impresses her enough that she makes a special trip to buy another before boarding a train 281 307.
  • At a luxurious liner’s bar, she asks for shaodaozi rather than a fashionable drink and accepts the bartender’s privately stored northern daqu 309.
  • Her polished romantic manner contrasts with her lack of experience: before falling for Cui Jiuyang, her thousand years of enchantment practice had involved illusion realms, not real relationships 318.
