The Barefoot Immortal turned at his voice and was startled to see Wukong. "Great Sage, aren't you protecting Tang Sanzang on the Journey to the West to fetch the scriptures? How have you found the time to attend this banquet? And... dressed like that?"
"You don't know the half of it, Immortal," Wukong said. "That road west is bitter indeed! Demons everywhere, countless vicious monsters, and now a Demon Dragon has appeared-a patriarch of thieves, a sage among burglars. He swindled Old Sun out of his treasures and even his clothes. Now Old Sun has no choice but to bare his arms and brave the cold wind to seek the Buddha's help. I heard that the Peach Banquet was being held today and reckoned the Buddha would surely attend, so here I am."
"I see," the Barefoot Immortal said in understanding.
"Have you seen the Buddha, Immortal?" Wukong asked.
"Not yet," the Barefoot Immortal said. "Go farther inside and look."
Wukong took his leave of the Barefoot Immortal and went inside.
He repeated his tale to every immortal he encountered along the way.
