Background / History
Bajie formerly served as Marshal Tianpeng, commanding eighty thousand naval troops of the Heavenly River. After drunkenly harassing Chang’e, he faced execution, but Taibai Jinxing’s intervention reduced his sentence to two thousand hammer blows and banishment to the mortal realm 10 18.
He mistakenly entered a pig’s womb and was born with a pig-like appearance. Living as a demon in Cloud Stack Cave on Fuling Mountain, he adopted the surname Zhu from his appearance and called himself Zhu Ganglie. Guanyin later guided him toward Buddhist practice, gave him the Dharma name Wuneng, and instructed him to await the scripture-seeking Pilgrim 7 11.
At Gao Village, Elder Gao initially valued his extraordinary farming ability: he plowed without oxen, harvested without tools, and worked from early morning until late at night. His changing appearance and enormous appetite subsequently alarmed the household. Bajie regarded Elder Gao as his former father-in-law and retained a strong attachment to Gao Village after joining the pilgrimage 7 13 27.
Appearance
- Ordinary appearance: Black face with short bristles, a long snout, huge ears, and a coarse, pig-like body. Elder Gao recalls that he initially appeared as a stout, dark man 7.
- Clothing: A woven-cloth robe between green and blue, with patterned cloth tied around his waist 7.
- True form: Round eyes resembling silver rings, halberd-like bristles, blade-like tusks, and a long snout compared to a brazier 11.
Personality
Bajie favors food, comfort, and material rewards. Elder Gao reports that he needs three to five pecks of rice per meal and roughly a hundred flatbreads for a morning snack. At Wuzhuang Temple, he swallows his Ginseng Fruit whole, fails to notice its taste, and immediately asks Wukong for another 7 42.
His willingness to work varies sharply with circumstance. Although initially diligent in Elder Gao’s household, he resents being made responsible for thousands of mu of promised farmland and spends days pretending to plow. Facing danger, he invents excuses, exaggerates his exploits, or proposes abandoning the pilgrimage and dividing the baggage 7 12 17 27.
He is boastful and teasing, particularly toward Wukong, but also capable of practical insight. He identifies Wukong as his expected senior brother from the references to heavenly livestock and farming, and later proposes recruiting the Peach Garden Strongmen to resolve Gao Village’s land dispute 11 13.
His courage is inconsistent rather than absent. He eagerly attacks Tiger Vanguard to make amends for an earlier misdeed, yet later delays fighting the same demon out of fear of hidden reinforcements. His loyalty can also be misdirected: convinced that Ao Tu is his rightful master, he attacks the real Tang Sanzang as an impostor 11 15 27.
Abilities & Skills
Rake Combat and Physical Strength
Bajie fights with the Supreme Treasure Gold-Banded Rake, also described as the Nine-Toothed Rake 8 10.
- Holds out against Wukong for more than a hundred exchanges before his arms weaken and he retreats 10.
- In his true form, topples seven mountains with his snout while attempting to reach Tang Sanzang 11.
- Gains the advantage over Tiger Vanguard within ten exchanges, but is driven off by the demon’s treasure 27.
- Helps Wukong and Sha Wujing attack Zhenyuan, though their combined assault cannot move him or prevent capture 45.
Transformations and True Form
Bajie states that he possesses thirty-six transformations 10.
- Reveals a more fearsome true form when enraged or pressed in battle 11 28.
- Uses that form to collapse the forest floor and uproot large trees 28.
- Ao Tu’s repeated golden-light attacks wound him and force him out of his true form 28.
Wind and Cloud Travel
- Escapes his first battle with Wukong by turning into a gust of wind 10.
- Rides a cloud toward the Southern Sea to seek Guanyin’s help, while acknowledging that his cloud is slower than Wukong’s 28.
- Says his cloud-riding cannot bear the mortal Tang Sanzang across the river 25.
Farming and Practical Work
- Can plow, harrow, and harvest without ordinary farming tools or draft animals 7.
- Enlarges his rake to over twenty zhang long, with a head more than ten zhang wide, and pulverizes weeds, roots, and stones into fertile soil 8.
- Cooks at Wuzhuang Temple and regularly carries the pilgrims’ luggage 16 41 44.
- Uproots four willow trees for Wukong to turn into decoys during an escape from Wuzhuang Temple 45.

- Pearl — Accepted from Ao Tu disguised as Wukong as private spending money for replacement clothes; Bajie stores it in his ear 28.
- Ginseng Fruit — Eats one of the three fruits stolen by Wukong, but swallows it too quickly to appreciate its taste 42.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Gao Village: False Discipleship and the Farmland Dispute
Ao Tu exploits Bajie’s expectation of the Pilgrim by impersonating Tang Sanzang. He accepts Bajie’s bows, names him “Bajie,” meaning “Eight Precepts,” and has him demonstrate his reclamation magic. Ao Tu then sells agreements for thousands of mu of farmland, collecting 668 taels of silver while telling Bajie that an absent senior disciple will do the work 8 9.
After receiving the Golden Flower, Bajie waits for that senior brother and instead fights Wukong. The misunderstanding escalates when the real Tang Sanzang denies knowing him. Guanyin clarifies the deception, and Bajie finally becomes Tang’s actual disciple 10 11 12.
The land agreements nevertheless prevent the party from leaving. Bajie’s deliberate underperformance prolongs the dispute until his suggestion leads Wukong to recruit the Peach Garden Strongmen, who reclaim and improve the land 12 13.
Yellow Wind Ridge
Bajie and Wukong pursue Tiger Vanguard, leaving Tang Sanzang exposed to capture. Bajie subsequently guards the horse and luggage and helps the injured Wukong find lodging 15 16.
During the rescue attempts, the Yellow Wind Monster’s gale hurls Bajie into a mountain hollow, where Tiger Vanguard captures him. Ao Tu reveals himself as Bajie’s former false master, threatens to cut off his snout, and then feeds him two pills. Wukong and Guanyin eventually rescue him with the other captives 19 23.
Flowing Sand River
With Wukong trapped in the Red Sand Formation, Bajie accepts a forged letter claiming his senior brother has returned home. He delays confronting Tiger Vanguard, then repeatedly battles Ao Tu disguised as the tiger 26 27 28.
When Tang Sanzang finally sends him to seek Guanyin, Ao Tu intercepts him in Wukong’s likeness. A gift and pearl persuade Bajie to return and argue for waiting instead. After Wukong escapes, Ao Tu captures Bajie and Tang beneath the river; both are later released, and Sha Wujing joins the pilgrimage 28 29 32.
Four Saints Test Chan Mind
Bajie participates in the pilgrims’ defense when Ao Tu and the disguised Bodhisattvas attack. Ao Tu captures him alongside Tang Sanzang, Sha Wujing, and the white horse 34 35.
Wuzhuang Temple
Bajie overhears the attendants discussing Ginseng Fruit and persuades Wukong to steal some. His demand for more after swallowing his share helps expose the theft, setting off the dispute that culminates in Wukong destroying the fruit tree 41 42.
He accompanies the party’s escape attempts and helps fight Zhenyuan, but is recaptured. When Ao Tu arrives offering to heal the tree, Bajie warns Tang Sanzang that the intervention may undermine their position and loudly points out that Wukong knocked it down 44 45.
White Bone Spirit Encounter
Bajie insists that the woman Wukong struck was an innocent farmer’s wife, salvages her food, and strengthens Tang Sanzang’s belief that Wukong committed murder. When Tiger Vanguard appears as her supposed brother, Bajie’s basket reveals the party’s connection to the dead woman, contributing to another confrontation and punishment for Wukong 50.
