Background / History
Lianshan Jingcheng began life as a village shepherd called Tiezhu. A plague left him orphaned and near death after killing or injuring more than half his village. An unnamed Wandering Healer saved him, gave him the name “Lianshan Jingcheng,” and taught him medicine for one month—instruction that continued to benefit him decades later 37.
After the healer departed, Jingcheng continued his education by working as an apprentice and odd-job helper at various clinics. He spent several years roaming the martial world, but abandoned his ambition of becoming a renowned wandering physician because he was too weak 37.
He later saved He Miaojun by a stroke of luck, and affection developed between them. They settled in Jiangzhou City, where her financial support enabled him to open Spring Revival Hall. Both had lost their families, making them protective of their son, Lianshan Xin, and content with a comparatively ordinary life 1 37.
Although the clinic earned a substantial income, Xin’s martial training and Miaojun’s medical care consumed almost all of it. The family could not afford to hire a clinic apprentice 37.
Appearance
- Fair-faced and handsome, with the appearance of a middle-aged “pretty boy.” His youthful good looks are credited with helping him win He Miaojun’s affection 1.
Personality
Jingcheng favors peace, stability, and modest expectations. He initially hopes that rejection from White Deer Grotto Academy will persuade Xin to inherit the clinic, believing that “an ordinary life is a blessing.” He says he raised his son to be gentle, kind, respectful, and frugal, and is exasperated by Xin’s pursuit of fame, rank, and wealth 1 21.
He accepts humiliation when necessary to support his family, but conceals it from his wife and son. Even after President Qu mistreats him, Jingcheng prefers reconciliation; nevertheless, he refuses to dismiss the grievance at Xin’s expense after his son intervenes 2 3.
His caution has a firm limit where his wife’s life is concerned. When using the Millennium Snow Lotus threatens the family with confiscation and clan extermination, he chooses treatment rather than leave Miaojun without a cure 17.
Jingcheng is tactful and reluctant to deliver devastating personal news unnecessarily. He recognizes Huang Jingji’s infertility before Xin investigates it, but initially keeps silent. He is also proud of his medical expertise and becomes irritated when Xin dismisses medicine or suggests that he has withheld his best techniques 41 46.
Abilities & Skills
Medical Diagnosis
Jingcheng is a respected Jiangzhou physician with extensive experience treating martial artists. His practice rests on observation, listening and smelling, questioning, and pulse-taking 1 38.
- Identifies Dai Yueying’s likely unawakened born bewitching physique by observing her from a distance 20.
- Recognizes signs that Xin may be approaching the True Intent Realm and warns that excessively rapid advancement could damage his cultivation foundation 36 38.
- Notices Huang Jingji’s infertility before Xin uses his supernatural vision to investigate it 46.
- Diagnoses Huang’s condition as damage to kidney essence caused by his cultivation technique 44 45.
Men’s Health and Restorative Treatment
Spring Revival Hall publicly advertises Jingcheng’s ability to restore male virility, though this is not his greatest medical specialty. Xin suggested making Virility Medicine the clinic’s main attraction, substantially increasing business 1 44.
- Invented virility pills regularly used by Huang Jingji 44.
- Explains that Huang must replace his damaging technique with one that replenishes primordial yang and is at least equal in grade to his current technique 45.
- Prescribes regular treatment and a Returning Essence Pill personally refined by the Celestial Master; he describes Huang’s recovery as possible but extremely difficult 45.
Medicinal Preparation
- Spends twenty years searching for a Millennium Snow Lotus to treat He Miaojun’s illness 20.
- Confirms that the lotus brought home by Xin can cure her and immediately begins preparing medicine 17.
- Initially mistakes the treasure for a Century Snow Lotus, an error Xin later cites when questioning his expertise 20.
Poisons and Corpse-Dissolving Water
- Teaches Xin how to make Corpse-Dissolving Water, which Xin later orders used to dispose of Dai Yongzhen and Dai Yueying 35.
- Includes poison preparation and poisoning among the medical subjects Xin studied; Jingcheng complains that his son favored these over proper medicine 46.
Martial Limitations
- Abandons his youthful martial-world ambitions because of insufficient strength 20 37.
- Describes himself and He Miaojun as ordinary mortals when trying to understand Xin’s rapid cultivation progress; no cultivation advancement is documented for Jingcheng 36.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Conflict with President Qu
After Jingcheng fails to save President Qu’s severely wounded brother-in-law, Qu cuts off Spring Revival Hall’s medicinal supplies. Jingcheng brings gifts to apologize and drinks with Qu’s steward until he vomits, without securing help. Discovering this mistreatment strengthens Xin’s determination to gain the protection of White Deer Grotto Academy 2.
When Qu returns with gifts and an apology, Jingcheng leaves the final decision to Xin. He subsequently treats Qu after Xin forces him to drink three jars of liquor to settle the dispute 3.
Supporting Xin’s Departure
- Secretly gives Xin a pouch of gold leaves before he leaves for the academy 4.
- Warns him not to depend solely on Kong Ningyuan or underestimate the world 4.
- Questions the dangers of internal conflict within the Nine Heavens when Xin announces his intention to join 20.
Treating He Miaojun
Jingcheng joins Xin in insisting that Miaojun receive the Millennium Snow Lotus despite its connection to the Crown Prince. He later suspends seeing patients to prioritize her recovery 17 37.
Xin’s service earns Jingcheng an offer to take over President Qu’s medicinal herb business in exchange for half its annual profits. Jingcheng fears becoming entangled with the Nine Heavens; when Xin pressures him by invoking the possibility of becoming a corrupt official, he chases his son out of the clinic with a stick 21.
Huang Jingji’s Diagnosis
Huang’s examination reveals that he has been infertile for roughly ten years despite having children and grandchildren. Jingcheng’s treatment requirements place Huang in need of resources Xin may obtain through the Nine Heavens 44 45.
Xin interprets this arrangement as a deliberate means of securing Huang’s loyalty. Jingcheng denies political intent, maintaining that he prescribed the treatment solely as a physician 46.
Relationships
- He Miaojun — Wife and original financial supporter of Spring Revival Hall. Jingcheng prioritizes her treatment over both his work and the danger of imperial punishment 1 17 37.
- Lianshan Xin — Son and medical student. Their arguments over ambition and medicine coexist with practical support; Jingcheng and Miaojun ultimately agree that they should support and protect him 4 21 35 46.
- Wandering Healer — Unnamed benefactor, first medical teacher, and the person who gave him his current name. Jingcheng reveres the healer’s skill and refusal to seek recognition; Xin resolves to investigate his identity and repay the debt 37 38.
- President Qu — Neighboring merchant-association president who retaliates against him over an unsuccessful treatment. Jingcheng only later learns that Qu belongs to the Demon Cult 2 3 20.
- Huang Jingji — Thorn Gang leader who previously bullied him and later becomes his patient. Jingcheng expresses no resentment when asked whether Huang should be forgiven 39 41 45.
- Dai Yongzhen — Patient treated several times for the lasting injuries of a failed True Intent breakthrough. This connection led to Xin studying under Dai 30.
- Heavenly Physician — Professional idol whose standing Jingcheng invokes to demonstrate medicine’s importance 46.
