Power Progression
The recorded ranks below measure Fu Shaoping’s proficiency in refining Blood Qi Powder, rather than the powder’s own cultivation level.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First Glimpse — 30/100 | 10 | The Mystic Mandate Codex improves his alchemy proficiency following a prisoner’s confession. |
| Beginning to Grasp — 50/100 | 12 | Studying the recipe raises his proficiency before his first furnace attempt. |
| Beginning to Grasp — 89/100 | 12 | His first attempt fails, but recording and reviewing the experience substantially increases his proficiency. |
| Novice — 20/100 | 12 | Successfully refines his second batch. Subsequent batches reach Grade C, then Grade B, then Grade A. |
| Proficient — 5/100 | 13 | Completes ten attempts with nine successful batches: two Grade C, five Grade B, and two Grade A. |
| Proficient — 30/100 | 19 | Refines seventeen batches in three days, producing ten Grade B portions and seven Grade A portions. |
| Proficient — 100/100 | 27 | Reaches this threshold at his hundredth portion; every subsequent portion is Grade A until the higher-quality variant emerges. |
| Perfection — 2/100 | 27 | Reaches a new mastery stage at his hundred and fiftieth batch, producing powder with a wheat fragrance rather than a bloody odor. |
| Perfection — 20/100 | 28 | Produces wheat-scented powder at approximately one portion per five batches. Granny Tang identifies it as Special Grade. |
| Perfection — 40/100 | 33 | Refines fourteen demonstration batches, four of them supreme grade. Explaining the process to Zhou Pan’er helps him reassess and consolidate his experience. |
Appearance
- Ordinary powder: Scarlet, with a pungent smell of blood; stored in paper packets, including kraft-paper wrappers 16.
- Special Grade: Gives off a faint wheat fragrance instead of the usual bloody odor. Zhou Pan’er also notices its finer color when comparing it with Grade A powder 27 28 33.
Effects and Limitations
Blood Qi Replenishment
- Swallowing the powder releases energy that transforms into blood qi and repeatedly washes through the user’s flesh, increasing strength 5.
- Fu Shaoping’s first packet raises his first-level Body Tempering progress from 16/100 to 20/100, a gain of four points 5.
- Four self-refined packets, together with his previously accumulated cultivation, bring his second-level progress to 20/100 15.
- A later session consuming eight packets brings his second-level progress to 65/100 19.
- Access to the recipe allows Fu Shaoping to support early cultivation with medicine and reserve the Codex’s points for martial skills 9.
Cultivation Ceiling and Resistance
- Ordinary Blood Qi Powder is intended for the first three Body Tempering levels; Fu Shaoping stops relying on it after reaching the fourth level 12 19 27.
- Special Grade powder retains a faint, limited effect on Fu Shaoping at the fourth level 28.
- Repeated consumption can produce resistance. Junior Banner Liu’s son takes so much that Grade C powder becomes nearly ineffective, prompting Liu to seek Grade A instead 19.
Special Grade
- Exceptional refining mastery can surpass the medicine’s inherent first-tier low-grade limit, producing a quasi first-tier mid-grade preparation 29.
- Granny Tang explains that this normally requires refining hundreds or thousands of batches. Even higher-ranked alchemists seldom devote that much time to such a basic medicine 29.
- Fu Shaoping attributes his unusually rapid attainment of Perfection partly to the Treasure Mirror’s point allocation 29.
Recipe and Refinement
Ingredients and Equipment
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Clear-sky grass | Principal herb; Fu Shaoping purchases ten-year-old specimens suitable for medicinal use 11. |
| Sunflower | Principal herb whose medicinal power interacts with the melted clear-sky grass 11 12. |
| Supplementary herbs | More than a dozen additional herbs assist the preparation 12. |
| Clearwood | First-tier spirit wood used as fuel; obtained from Seven-Mile Mountain 9 11. |
| Alchemy furnace | Necessary to withstand clearwood’s heat. An ordinary iron pot turns red and shatters during the initial home attempt 12. |
Documented Method
- Preheat the furnace over burning clearwood before adding clear-sky grass 12.
- Adjust the heat as the grass melts into green liquid, then add sunflower; the mixture develops a pink outer layer 12.
- Add supplementary herbs and continue controlling the heat until the ingredients coagulate into powder 12 33.
- Withdraw the furnace from the heat when the preparation is complete. Fu Shaoping initially uses the Earthfire Chamber’s suspended furnace and wall mechanism 12.
Learning the Craft
- Zhou Pan’er receives the recipe from Granny Xue and shares its yellowed paper copy with Fu Shaoping without withholding information 9 29.
- Successfully producing the medicine barely qualifies Fu Shaoping as a Pill-Refining Apprentice, according to Junior Banner Liu 13.
- Zhou Pan’er learns by observing, taking notes, and assisting Fu Shaoping. Her first independent batch is Grade C; her final five batches in the teaching sequence reach Grade B 33.
Availability and Trade
| Product or Transaction | Documented Price / Terms |
|---|---|
| Hall of Myriad Treasures packet | Two Low-Grade Essence Stones 5. |
| Ingredient set | At least half an Origin Stone elsewhere; the Hall generally charges more than the Black Market unless the buyer belongs to the Alchemy Hall 9. |
| Black Market ingredient set | The herb seller quotes 120 Origin Shells per set, reduced to one Low-Grade Essence Stone per set for bulk purchases 11. |
| Initial barter agreement | Twelve ingredient sets for five packets, with higher offers for Grade B or Grade A according to market prices 16. |
| Grade A packet | Two Low-Grade Essence Stones and fifty spirit shells 28. |
| Special Grade packet | Granny Tang offers ten Low-Grade Essence Stones—the price of a first-tier mid-grade Qi Condensation Pill 29. |
- The Hall of Myriad Treasures offers one month of free storage for purchased or exchanged supplies; Fu Shaoping initially leaves four of his five packets there 5.
- The Hall normally distributes Grade C powder. Junior banners can obtain Grade B through their authority, but Grade A is not required by the Alchemy Hall’s monthly production assignments 19 32.
- Alchemy Hall members are forbidden from accepting private commissions. Fu Shaoping, who declines membership, can supply higher-quality powder privately 13 32.
- Junior Banner Liu pays thirty Low-Grade Essence Stones for ten Grade A portions, five stones above their stated total price, and promises access to an earth-class alchemy room 28.
- Junior Banner Zhuo commissions ten Grade A batches for his daughter at ten percent above market rate 32.
Story Role
Early Cultivation and Income
Fu Shaoping initially spends his ten Low-Grade Essence Stones on five packets. After Zhou Pan’er shares the recipe, the pair gather clearwood and purchase herbs to begin refining their own supply 5 9 11.
His first ten attempts yield nine usable portions, which he estimates could sell for forty Low-Grade Essence Stones against ten stones spent on ingredients. He gives Zhou Pan’er three packets and begins exchanging finished powder for further ingredients, making alchemy a source of both cultivation resources and income 13 16.
Financing a Home Furnace
After reaching the fourth Body Tempering level, Fu Shaoping continues refining primarily to fund an alchemy furnace. His Special Grade powder proves far more valuable than expected: he exchanges five packets for fifty sets of ingredients and returns home with 230 Low-Grade Essence Stones 27 29.
The earnings enable him to purchase a Purple-Gold Alchemy Furnace for Zhou Pan’er, allowing her to learn and practice at home 29 30.
Zhou Pan’er’s Training
Granny Xue makes Zhou Pan’er’s ability to refine Blood Qi Powder, together with reaching the fourth Body Tempering level, a condition for learning more about her birth parents. Zhou Pan’er fulfills the alchemy requirement during Fu Shaoping’s instruction 29 33.
Later, she continues making Blood Qi Powder to improve her alchemy before attempting Origin-Consolidating Pills; Fu Shaoping purchases another batch of ingredients for her from Granny Tang 48.
