The scene slowly warped, then gradually came into focus again. A clamor of voices inexplicably rose around him.
"They're back! Someone's back over here too!"
"Are they still alive? Keep them contained!"
"No! Wait, this person! He's an Investigator from Division Three, and he's still alive!"
"What? That kid's still alive? Quick, take me over there!"
The scene before Xia Shou gradually became clear and real, as though he were waking from a dream.
One of the people there was exceptionally short, only reaching his knees, like a circus dwarf. Even his hazmat suit was a specially made miniature version.
Even without seeing his face, Xia Shou knew he was Dr. Modis.
"You're one lucky fellow, making it out of a closed domain alive. Quick, tell me what this closed domain was like! What did you encounter inside?" Dr. Modis asked excitedly.
"Another day, Doctor. Could you please stop exploiting my division's staff like this?"
Xia Shou looked toward the voice and saw Shangguan Yan leaning against the doorway in a long black trench coat, a lollipop between her lips. She was staring at her phone as she spoke distractedly.
She looked up at Xia Shou and gave him a knowing smile. "Let's go. You must be exhausted, right? Ride back with me and get some sleep. You still haven't finished yesterday's routine work."
Xia Shou frowned, suddenly feeling an overwhelming sympathy for the previous owner of the notebook and his opinion of her.
Shangguan Yan really was the absolute worst!
"Weiyu, are you heading back to rest too?" Xia Shou asked, turning toward her.
"Yeah! I'm exhausted. Just head back without me. I'll take another car," Su Weiyu said.
Xia Shou nodded and followed Shangguan Yan outside.
Only when he reached the hospital entrance did Xia Shou suddenly remember that he had forgotten to ask where Su Weiyu lived.
But that was a minor issue. They already had each other's contact details, so they could get in touch anytime.
Xia Shou sat in the back seat with his mind blank, watching the scenery outside the window rush past.
In the driver's seat, Shangguan Yan casually recounted what had happened at the hospital.
Apparently, more than fifty people had survived, which qualified as a miracle in an incident like this.
However, because the casualties were so heavy, the Containment Bureau planned to modify those fifty-odd survivors' memories and immediately demolish the hospital building with explosives. They would ask the relevant departments to hold a press conference and pin the incident on extremist terrorists.
"Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Even in the Containment Bureau, work as intense as yours is an exception. You've just been unlucky. Get some proper rest when you're back, then hurry over to the office for overtime," Shangguan Yan said mildly.
Xia Shou's face immediately fell. "Boss, are you serious? You still want me working overtime when I'm in this state?"
"This is for your own good. Time off only distracts you. Only overtime can cure those negative feelings of yours. Working overtime will help you realize that the Containment Bureau's routine work is actually very safe. It isn't all life-or-death work like the Blood Demon House and closed domains."
"...That's just an excuse to make me work overtime."
"Anyway, be at the division at seven sharp tonight. A senior colleague just got back from a business trip, so you two should meet. You'll have plenty of work to do together in the future. Better get acquainted early."
With that, she took a lollipop out of her pocket and passed it back to Xia Shou from the front seat. "Want some sugar?"
"No, I don't," Xia Shou refused.
"Turning down your boss's goodwill is a sign of low emotional intelligence. Lucky for you, you're in my division... Don't worry, I won't make life difficult for you over something this small," Shangguan Yan said with a smile.
Xia Shou's expression darkened. He silently accepted the lollipop, tore off the wrapper, and stuck it in his mouth. The wrapper was surprisingly easy to remove.
Once they returned to the Containment Bureau, Shangguan Yan gave him a key card for the gym and headed back to the division on her own. Xia Shou dragged his exhausted body and mind back to his single-occupancy dorm room.
As soon as he pushed the door open, he discovered that Su Weiyu was already inside.
He also noticed that the previously empty bed in what was originally a double room now had sheets on it-pink sheets of the sort girls often used, at that.
"Weren't you going back to rest? Why are you here?" Xia Shou asked with a frown. "And did a new roommate move in while I was out?"
"Oh! This is my bed." Su Weiyu patted the sheets as though it were perfectly natural. "When I came looking for you at noon today, I stopped by the dorm first. You weren't here, so I made the bed and got everything ready myself."
Xia Shou was dumbfounded. "You're going to live here?"
Su Weiyu froze. Seeing the shock on Xia Shou's face, she realized that something had gone wrong.
She had actually thought Xia Shou would be delighted.
Just last night, she had specifically searched the world-famous Q&A forum [Zhihu] and found the question she wanted to see: "If a beautiful young girl insisted on moving in with you, what would you think?"
The answers below were:
Anonymous Netizen: Depends on the situation. If her motives are what I think they are, I'd find a rooftop high enough to jump off, because I'd definitely be dreaming.
Big-Dicked Guy Speaks First: I don't smoke or drink, and I spend all my spare time gaming. I make twenty thousand a month. If she feels that way about me, I'd put ten thousand toward daily expenses and spend the other ten thousand on condoms and Indian potency oil.
New Poor Guy Says: Three days... Three days is my limit for pretending to be a gentleman.
There were countless similar answers.
With a seriousness she had never shown before, Su Weiyu had carefully studied the answers one by one.
As she read, she could not help laughing aloud. In the end, she decided on the spot to move into the Containment Bureau's dorm first thing the next morning and live with Xia Shou!
She currently stayed in five-star hotels, rotating through different rooms every day and eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner at whichever hotel she pleased.
But if she could be with Xia Shou, she did not mind living in a cramped dorm room and eating together in the staff cafeteria.
Last night, she had tossed and turned in bed, imagining the expression Xia Shou would have when he saw that she had moved into his dorm and was going to live with him. She was far too excited to sleep.
And yet... the situation she now faced did not seem to line up with the answers online.
For an instant, Su Weiyu's mind went completely blank.
She almost hallucinated an affection meter beside Xia Shou, like one in a game, plummeting at incredible speed.
* !Damn*
girl pretty a with living likes who man a isn't Shou Xia, miscalculated I
Together!
"I-I-I-I! I didn't know what you thought!
You know, hardly anyone ever interacts with me, so I tend to just do whatever!
I was going to ask you, but I looked it up online... No, I didn't!
I actually thought... um... well... that..."
Su Weiyu stood up, trying to explain herself in a jumble of words.
After a few seconds of floundering for words, Su Weiyu's brain crashed.
Before this, she had never understood what the so-called social death actually felt like. Now she understood.
For her, her entire social world had only ever consisted of herself and Xia Shou... so this definitely counted as social death.
