Background / History

Household and hostility toward the Uchiha

Tsunade lives with Mito Uzumaki, Nawaki, and Kushina Uzumaki in the Senju Clan Compound. She initially dismisses Mito’s encouragement to find a partner, saying that she is comfortable living independently 8.

Her early treatment of Uchiha Lei is shaped by hostility between the Senju and Uchiha clans. After Lei exhausts himself calming the Nine-Tails inside Mito, Tsunade questions his pale appearance and suggests that he might be short-lived. Mito twists her ear and orders her to stop judging him through the clans’ feud. Tsunade later repeats her granduncle’s claim that the Uchiha are evil, prompting Mito to restrain and whip her with Adamantine Sealing Chains 17 18.

Saving Uchiha Lei

When Lei is hospitalized, Tsunade initially refuses to become involved in Uchiha affairs. Learning that he is Chiaki’s child and also possesses Senju blood shocks her; Mito’s orders and Kushina’s pleas then send her to the hospital 21.

Tsunade uses the Mystical Palm Technique to stimulate Lei’s dangerously slow heartbeat. His unconscious system traps her hand and drains her chakra while plundering her basic Senju Sage Body. Instructor and relationship with Lei

Three years after their first meeting, Tsunade becomes the instructor of Lei, Kushina, and Mikoto. During the assignment negotiations, she also secures Orochimaru as Nawaki’s teacher, while Orochimaru takes Hyuga Mie as his student 37 38 39 44.

Her relationship with Lei begins after she teases him by claiming to be dating Dan Katō. Lei corners and forcibly kisses her, demanding that she not seek a boyfriend. She eventually reciprocates and accepts his promise to care for her. Although they initially intend to keep the relationship private, they reveal it to Kushina and Tsunade’s family soon afterward 38 39.

Tsunade publicly confirms the relationship at the army’s departure for the front, rejecting Jiraiya’s objections. When Hiruzen later challenges her choice of an Uchiha partner, she argues that the old clan feud belongs in the past and insists that she knows Lei’s character 43 44.

Ibuse antidote and frontline deployment

As Amegakure attacks the Land of Fire’s border, Hiruzen assigns Tsunade two tasks: counter Ibuse’s poison and increase the number of medical ninja. She objects that medical training requires time and adequate chakra control, but reluctantly agrees to recruit from Academy graduates and regular village ninja 41.

Her initial antidote trials fail. Lei’s team then delivers three-flowered purple rue grass gathered for her research, enabling further progress. When the border situation worsens, she travels with Lei and Mikoto to Konoha’s camp 46 47 48.

Despite her imposing manner, she is deeply attached to Mito. She fears her grandmother’s anger and becomes tearful when Mito speaks about dying. Her resentment toward Lei initially grows because Mito repeatedly punishes her for insulting him 17 23.

Her medical judgment can be obscured by her abrasive delivery. She calls saving Lei a doctor’s duty and considers him recovered even when his family distrusts her recommendation to discharge him. She also leaves her personal time with Lei immediately when summoned over a frontline emergency 24 40.

Once committed to Lei, she defends their relationship against both personal rivals and village authority. She openly rejects Jiraiya’s comparison with him and challenges Hiruzen’s attempt to invoke the Senju–Uchiha feud 43 44.
