Why couldn't these Konoha Ninja stay in their village instead of coming here with nothing better to do?

He slapped hard at Orochimaru's hand gripping his arm, his voice trembling with extreme fear.
"Can't you see this fellow doesn't care whether I live or die? Taking me hostage won't do you any good..."
This bastard had just said he would protect the Land of Rice Fields once the village was established, only to turn around and take him hostage.
He couldn't keep his word at all.
Did any of his earlier promises actually count?
Once he helped him establish a Ninja Village, would he really protect the country?

Orochimaru said nothing. He quietly studied Uchiha Jin's expression, trying to catch even a trace of some other emotion.
