Background / History
Childhood and chosen name
Ding Shu grew up in a family that favored sons. She was the youngest of four daughters, followed by Ding Ding and, later, Ding Xianzong. Her parents delayed her schooling so she could accompany Ding Ding, giving her access to educational opportunities her older sisters had lacked 34 35 77.
She despised the name Zhaodi because it made her feel that she existed only to pray for another child’s arrival. After reading Sanmao’s description of living like an independent, steadfast tree, she began writing Ding Shu on all her exercise books 35.
When her parents planned to withdraw her from school and marry her off, she ran away. Human traffickers subsequently abducted her and demanded twenty thousand yuan for her release. Her parents refused to pay; Ding Ding arrived three days later with the ransom and gave her his remaining cash before they parted. Afterward, the siblings largely limited their contact to an annual New Year phone call 34 35.
Career and independence
Thirty marked a turning point in Ding Shu’s life: she won the International Jewelry Design Competition, became W.E.’s chief designer, bought her own home, and accumulated enough savings to feel financially secure. Despite those achievements, seeing Ding Ding’s relationship with Bai Congming made her recognize that she also wanted to be loved with unwavering certainty 41.
Her career remains demanding. She works overtime on New Year’s Day and later spends several consecutive days developing a new season’s designs. A necklace completed during the Spring Festival performs well in an international awards competition 60 98 113.
Reunion with Ding Ding
Ding Shu clears two days to visit Ding Ding after his financial collapse and injury. She brings his identification documents and a replacement phone, offers him two hundred thousand yuan, and arranges clothes and household appliances. Ding Ding insists on accepting only twenty thousand yuan—the amount he once paid to rescue her 31 34 35 40.
Her first meeting with Bai Congming goes badly. Concerned that Ding Ding is exploiting him, she questions whether their relationship is voluntary and angrily confronts her brother. Seeing Bai Congming shield Ding Ding during their argument convinces her that his affection is genuine 31 32.
She later apologizes to Bai Congming while taking him to buy fireworks. His explanation that she is family, and therefore important, deeply affects her guarded understanding of family bonds 40.
Relationship with Sun Chang'an
Ding Shu meets Sun Chang'an while investigating the herbal medicine Ding Ding has been taking. She asks the doctor to add her on WeChat so she can contact him with questions 35.
Their next encounter occurs when Sun Chang'an retrieves a kitten from beneath her car. Attracted to him, she approaches with a joke about staging an accident. Their relationship develops naturally, and they move in together at the beginning of autumn; she remains in M City and conducts work meetings from the room behind his clinic 41 55.
By Ding Ding’s birthday celebration, they have already registered their marriage. Ding Shu announces that their wedding will take place before the New Year 148.
Reunion with her older sisters
For Ding Ding’s surprise birthday party, Ding Shu invites their eldest and second sisters. She hopes the reunion will help him move beyond his longstanding distress over birthdays. Ding Lai Di, their third sister, also arrives unexpectedly 141 142.
The visit exposes Ding Shu’s unresolved resentment toward Ding Lai Di. Once close, they became estranged after repeated unpaid loans and escalating demands. Ding Shu also confronts her over encouraging their father to end her education and later attempting to lure her home for an arranged match 142 149.
When Ding Lai Di upsets Bai Congming, Ding Shu supports Ding Ding’s demand for an apology. She records the apology video, warns Ding Lai Di against further schemes, and delivers money Ding Ding has entrusted to their eldest and second sisters. Those two sisters decline her wedding invitation before leaving 150 152.
Marriage and later events
Ding Shu marries Sun Chang'an at a lavish wedding banquet, with Ding Ding escorting her to the groom. The Sun family arranges younger relatives to accompany her as a bride because her own relatives are largely absent. Although Ding Ding contributes generously to her dowry, she regards her professional achievements—not her husband’s wealth—as the source of her confidence 154.
She subsequently assists with Ding Ding and Bai Congming’s wedding arrangements, including receiving guests and settling them into their hotel while keeping the preparations secret from Bai Congming 157 158.
Appearance
- Sun Xiangxiang considers Ding Shu good-looking 73.
- During her New Year visit, she dresses for style rather than warmth and arrives shivering after carrying goods to the house 59.
- At her wedding, she wears a phoenix crown and embroidered bridal robes 154.
Personality
Ding Shu is sharp-tongued, proud, and reluctant to express affection directly. She and Ding Ding trade insults almost automatically, but each steps forward when the other needs help. She disguises concern as criticism, questioning his health, finances, and living arrangements while supplying practical support 31 34 55.
Her aggressive manner began as a childhood defense: she believed acting fiercer would prevent others from bullying her. Beneath that bluster, she was sensitive enough to cry over poetry. Her parents’ abandonment and later experiences with her sisters leave her suspicious of affection tied to obligation or material gain 35 40 142.
She maintains firm boundaries with her birth family. She refuses to return when her father is dying and rejects Ding Lai Di’s attempt to obtain help through Sun Chang'an’s family. By the time of her marriage, she openly identifies herself and Ding Ding as people who have built new families of their own 64 148 149.

- Award-recognized work: Produces a necklace that performs well at an international awards competition 98.

Practical limitations
- Cooking: Cannot cook; she and Sun Chang'an rely on prepared food when hosting Bai Congming for dinner 60 70.
Relationships

- Bai Congming — Ding Ding’s partner, whom she introduces to her older sisters as her little brother’s wife. After initially fearing that Ding Ding is exploiting him, she becomes protective of him, buys him a small electric car, and helps furnish the couple’s new home 31 32 64 99 142.
- Sun Chang'an — Her husband, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. Their relationship brings her the settled home life she had not expected to find 55 148.

- Ding Nian Di — Her second older sister, whom she invites to Ding Ding’s birthday alongside Pan Di. Both older sisters are delighted by her marriage announcement but ultimately decline to attend her wedding 142 148 152.
- Ding Lai Di — Her third older sister and former confidante. Their relationship deteriorates over financial demands and interference in Ding Shu’s independence. Ding Shu acknowledges that Lai Di urged their father to pay her ransom, but refuses to let that erase her other actions 142 149.
- Ding Changyuan — Her father. His refusal to ransom her confirms her belief that her parents do not love her; she later refuses to visit him when he is gravely ill 35 64 67.
- Sun Xiangxiang — Sun Chang'an’s niece and one of the relatives who accompanies Ding Shu during her wedding preparations. An earlier misunderstanding leads Ding Shu to offer her five hundred thousand yuan to leave Bai Congming before learning that the gathering is simply a barbecue 73 154.
