Shortly after the medicinal fragrance spread, five figures rushed out, their clothes somewhat disheveled.
Their gazes swept the corridor before finally settling on a room.
Naturally, it was the little room where Xiao Chen was staying.
Five gazes as sharp as hawks pierced the drifting pale-red medicinal fragrance and locked firmly onto Xiao Chen's tightly shut door.
That medicinal fragrance, so thick it seemed impossible to disperse, was a fatal temptation to them, a raging fire that ignited the greed in their hearts.
The old man leading them was thin and withered, yet his eyes were exceptionally keen. He drew a deep breath, and an undisguised gleam of greed burst from his cloudy old eyes.
He licked his cracked lips and said hoarsely, "Hiss-this medicinal fragrance-it's definitely a fifth-grade pill! There's no mistaking it!"
"Lord Jing, should we-" A burly man with a brutish face beside him could no longer restrain himself, itching to act.
Just as the greed in the withered old man's eyes intensified and the brutish man was about to make his move.
A soft creak sounded.
The door of an inconspicuous little room diagonally opposite was suddenly pulled open.
At the same time, an icy shout rang out. "What do you think you're doing?!"
A young man stood like a spear in the doorway, his figure erect, his shoulders broad and his back straight, instantly drawing everyone's attention.
He wore simple, close-fitting dark teal martial attire beneath a well-tailored, dark belted robe. His sleeves were neat, without a single crease, and his movements were crisp and efficient.
His face was very young, looking no older than thirty, with healthy wheat-colored skin and sharply defined features.
Most striking were his eyes, which were sweeping fearlessly over the five people in the corridor.
His gaze held profound contempt for the greedy.
The young man had a high, straight nose, and his hair was neatly tied into a simple high ponytail behind his head, revealing his smooth, full forehead and temples. He looked spirited, without a single stray hair out of place.
The five swept their gazes over the Second-Rank Alchemist badge on the young man's chest, and a clear flicker of astonishment passed through their eyes.
Among the five were two old men and three middle-aged men who appeared to be in their thirties.
The two old men wore Third-Rank Alchemist Badges on their chests.
The other three were all Second-Rank Alchemists, the same rank as the young man.
"Hehe, young friend, what is your relationship with the alchemist in that room?" Keeping his eyes on the wisps of pale-red fragrance drifting from the room, one of the old men coughed twice, slowly approached the young man, and asked amiably.
The young man cast a faint glance at this seemingly amiable old man and shook his head. "I don't know him."
The old man's smile did not fade at this answer. Still beaming, he said, "Hehe, young friend, that sudden energy fluctuation just now came from here. We mean nothing else; we only want to go inside and ask about it. Hehe, after all, we're all a thousand meters in the air right now. If anything goes wrong, we'll all suffer."
The young man did not reply. He merely took out a crimson staff.
"That's right, young fellow. You could practically say we're all in the same boat now. If the person in that room makes something dangerous, it won't do any of us any good." Another old man, with white hair and beard and dressed in an elegant deep-blue alchemist's robe, also approached with a smile that did not reach his eyes. His gaze furtively swept over the little room, and his Adam's apple visibly bobbed several times.
He was the withered old man addressed earlier as "Lord Jing."
Seeing that both old men had spoken this way, the other three middle-aged men also gathered around and echoed them in unison.
While voicing their agreement, they even proposed that all six of them enter the room together to inspect it.
"The alchemist in that room is clearly refining pills. You're all sensible people, so there's no need to play dumb with me. Please preserve your dignity as alchemists, respect yourselves and conduct yourselves properly. Return to your own rooms and don't disturb him without cause." The young man glanced at the five people before him, whose ill intentions were obvious, and spoke with a sharp gaze.
"Hehe, you're joking, young friend. We have no such intentions. But as you know, we're a thousand meters in the air. None of us can bear the consequences if an accident occurs. And since you chose to ride a Flying Bird Beast, you certainly haven't reached the point of using Dou Qi Transformation Wings yet. If something really does happen-" the old man who had spoken first said, his face full of smiles.
Yet, peaceful as his smile was, it still could not conceal those traces of greed and malice.
Although he knew that the mysterious alchemist inside was probably fifth-rank or at the very peak of the fourth rank, the other party was clearly in the middle of refining pills. At such a time, distraction was taboo. With one careless mistake, ruining the pill would be the least of his troubles. If he suffered a backlash, he might well become a cripple for the rest of his life.
That was why he dared to act so boldly.
The other four harbored the same thoughts.
"Young fellow, we're only going to take a look. We won't cause any trouble, so sorry for the trouble, but please step aside."
The brutish-faced man knew this was an excellent opportunity, so he dared not delay any longer. He stepped forward and reached straight out to shove the young man.
"Get lost!"
At the man's action, the young man's expression turned icy. His grip abruptly tightened, and the crimson staff carried a ferocious force as it slammed into the middle-aged man's palm before he could react.
Thud!
With a dull impact, the burly man staggered rapidly backward.
"A Five-Star Dou Master?!"
At these words, the others' expressions shifted slightly.
"Ying Ming, You Kang, hurry up and attack! The pill inside is almost finished!" The old man who had spoken first turned directly to the other two Second-Rank Alchemists and shouted.
From the looks of it, the three clearly knew one another.
At the old man's reminder, the other two Second-Rank Alchemists exchanged a glance and nodded together. Stamping their feet, they attacked the young man from the left and right.
The burly man who had been driven back also charged in to attack.
One Three-Star Dou Shi and two Four-Star Dou Shi thus attempted to keep the young man occupied.
But the young man was indeed an expert, driving all three back in just three moves.
Yet the two smug sneers behind him made his heart jolt.
He abruptly turned around, only to see that the two old men wearing Third-Rank Alchemist Badges had already appeared before the door.
One of them turned his head and flashed the young man a smug grin, saying sinisterly, "Boy, remember in your next life: mind your own business! Once we've dealt with the fellow inside, we'll throw you off!"
At that moment, the other old man's fist had already struck the wooden door.
Wood splinters flew everywhere, and the door burst apart amid the two old men's smug laughter.
Casually sweeping aside some flying splinters, the old man who had smashed the door wore a broad smile.
He was just about to step into the room when a figure flashed before him like a ghost.
A young, fair-skinned hand shot out like lightning, finally clamping around the old man's neck and lifting him into the air.
"You're going to deal with me?"
The calm voice beside his ear made the pupils of the still somewhat bewildered old man suddenly contract.
