Background / History
Chen Xin found Chen An as a baby while returning from an outing and brought him to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. He named the child “Chen An” because he hoped the boy would grow up safe and sound 1.
After Chen An awakened his Martial Souls, Chen Xin became his cultivation instructor. He began with meditation, Soul Power recovery, and controlled expenditure, helping Chen An maintain the Dragon-Transforming Pot without exhausting himself unnecessarily. He also arranged the boy’s first Soul Hunt, taking particular care because the unusual cooking Martial Soul had no established precedent for ring selection 2 4.
Personality
Chen Xin is affectionate but firm with the children. He smiles at Ning Rongrong’s transparent attempts to bring dinner forward, yet still makes Chen An complete his lessons. His instruction consistently balances regular practice with rest rather than demanding rapid advancement at any cost 2 11 20.
His protectiveness is practical and attentive. Before permitting unusually old Soul Rings, he examines Chen An’s condition and explains the risks plainly. After absorption, he checks for injuries and insists on recovery before allowing the boy to test a new dish 23 24 36 37.
He also enjoys teasing Gu Rong, especially over food. After Gu Rong discovers that he has already eaten Chen An’s fried rice, Chen Xin casually boasts that he had two bowls. Their bickering does not prevent them from studying Soul Beast records together or coordinating protection of the sect 3 4.
Abilities & Skills
Sword Energy and Sword Intent
Chen Xin uses sword-based power to restrain Soul Beasts and protect those beside him 24 36 37.
- Subdues a roughly 950-year-old Earth King with sword light, immobilizing its tail and pincers 24.
- Pins down a seven-thousand-year Mandala Snake and splits its scales so Chen An can deliver the killing strike with an ordinary dagger 36.
- Repels approaching Soul Beasts with Sword Intent while Chen An absorbs his third ring 37.
Soul Power Control
His control allows him to apply force selectively, from intimidating beasts to examining a child’s cultivation 6 23.
- Releases only a little aura to drive away Soul Beasts attracted by popcorn 6.
- Gradually increases pressure to test Chen An’s physical endurance without introducing sharp Sword Intent 23.
- Creates a Soul Power barrier that stops a lunging Mandala Snake 36.
- Channels gentle Soul Power into Chen An to assess circulation, physical condition, and breakthrough stability 23 33 56.
Soul Beast Knowledge and Ring Assessment
Chen Xin evaluates a Soul Beast’s traits, age, and compatibility rather than treating age alone as the deciding factor 4 23 36.
- Identifies a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent as a suitable candidate for a food-type Martial Soul 4.
- Estimates an Earth King’s age from its nineteen tail segments 24.
- Explains tracks, habits, and environmental signs during forest travel 5 36.
- Warns that he can restrain a beast, but Chen An must endure its Soul Ring’s power himself 36.
- Avoids assigning certainty to incomplete evidence, directing Chen An to ask an academy teacher about identifying ambiguous traces 42.
Teaching and Supervision
Chen Xin teaches both cultivation fundamentals and their practical use 2 10 29.
- Helps Chen An reduce the Soul Power consumed by maintaining his cookware 2.
- Advises him to learn the weight and required force of each Eternal Spirit Knife form even without adding a Soul Ring 6.
- Supervises evasion practice and freely answers Fang Ming’s questions 10.
- Explains the timing of an auxiliary Soul Master’s boosts during an academy training exercise 29.
- Keeps cultivation on Chen An’s schedule alongside cooking and academic study 33 41.
Relationships
- Chen An — Grandfather figure and principal cultivation teacher. Chen Xin rescued and named him, oversees his development, and buys him a three-cubic-meter Storage Soul Tool belt for 41,000 Gold Soul Coins 1 2 12.
- Ning Rongrong — Affectionately calls him Grandpa Sword. He accompanies her on outings, buys her flower-adorned hair ties, and participates in her cultivation supervision 2 12 20.
- Gu Rong — Fellow sect elder and friendly rival. They tease each other over meals and escort duties while cooperating on Chen An’s Soul Ring preparation 3 4 16.
- Ning Fengzhi — Sect master who addresses him as Uncle Jian. They coordinate Soul Hunting arrangements and discuss the significance of Chen An’s food-based abilities 3 4 26.
