In an alley, more than a dozen humans—children, women, and men—were running desperately, while a large group of yokai chased after them.
However, these yokai did not seem to be in much of a hurry to catch them. Instead, they wanted the humans to fear them, to panic and flee in terror.
Watching these frightened humans, the yokai could not help but burst into laughter, feeding on their fear. It made them feel immensely delighted!
However, if they were caught, these yokai would not show mercy. They would kill them outright and eat them.
Only weak little yokai merely frightened people without eating them.
Those with even a little strength would first let their prey flee in fear, like cats toying with mice. They would terrorize their prey and absorb their fearful emotions, then kill them once they had grown tired of playing.
Normally, when yokai acted at night, they would not attack humans inside their homes. This was because during the Heian period, yokai and human Onmyoji had signed an agreement: the day belonged to humans, and the night belonged to yokai.
During Hyakki Yagyō at night, they were not allowed to attack humans inside their rooms.
But... this time was different. A massive gathering of yokai had assembled in Kyoto. They had become utterly unscrupulous and no longer cared about any agreement.
Besides, once the Child of Darkness descended, this world would become a world that belonged entirely to yokai. Whether day or night, it would all belong to yokai, so why would they still care about any agreement?
