"Weren't you two planning to rob me of my silver and then take my life?"
Lu Mingyue spoke quietly, not a trace of hesitation on her face. She controlled the branches on the other side, winding them around Brother Dali's arms and hoisting him up as well, leaving both men suspended in midair.
"Ah! Spare me! Please spare me, miss!"
With one arm suspended, Monkey had been about to take out his dagger and cut through the branches, only for his other arm and both feet to be entangled as well. The sight practically scared him witless, and he begged Lu Mingyue for mercy, tears and snot streaming down his face.
"Fairy! You're an immortal cultivator! We brothers had eyes but failed to recognize Mount Tai. Please show mercy, Fairy, and spare our lives!"
Brother Dali was clearly a little cleverer and had already worked out Lu Mingyue's identity.
What monster? She was clearly an immortal cultivator!
The two brothers must truly have accumulated virtue for eight lifetimes. Of all the targets they could have picked, they had chosen a female immortal!
"You two certainly have a good attitude about admitting your mistakes."
Lu Mingyue stood with her hands behind her back, watching the two idlers whose limbs were all entangled in branches. Her expressionless little face made both Brother Dali and Monkey hold their breath.
"Unfortunately..."
"No!"
"Ah-"
The next instant, as Lu Mingyue activated her origin power, the eight bundles of branches pulled together, tearing the limbs straight off the two men and turning them into two screaming "wooden sticks."
Whoomph!
Lu Mingyue was not cruel. She was merely avenging the innocent souls these two had murdered. Rather than stand by and watch them slowly bleed to death, she reduced them both to charcoal with a single Fireball Technique.
"No wonder those immortals see all mortal beings as ants..."
Watching two people who had been alive moments ago turn into two incomplete lumps of charcoal in the woods in the blink of an eye, Lu Mingyue shook her head. Thinking that she was now little different from those immortals, she turned and left.
The sense of familiarity this place gave her was far too strange. Lu Mingyue still could not remember just where that feeling came from.
Yet she did not want to remain here.
That was why she had not even taken out her Corpse-Wrapping Cloth.
If possible, she would leave the Great Ye Dynasty, either seeking a blessed haven rich in heaven and earth spiritual qi with ample wild food, or going to a neighboring country to assume a new identity.
Either of the two was an option for Lu Mingyue.
As for how to get past the border stronghold at Cangzhou Prefectural City... that was not much of a problem for Lu Mingyue now that she was an immortal cultivator.
Whoosh!
About half a day after Lu Mingyue left, a fierce wind swept through, and a tall figure in white suddenly appeared standing on a tree trunk in the woods.
"Mm, it really is the aura of origin power cultivated through the Five Elements Eternal Spring Art. I've spent years searching for this!"
The white-robed figure was a middle-aged man with handsome features, eyes like stars, and a profound gaze. He possessed an ethereal air, as though he were an immortal beyond the mortal dust.
"Not Bai Yunzi... it seems to be a woman!"
The white-robed man rode a cloud down to where Lu Mingyue had stood. Looking at the two small footprints on the ground, his nostrils twitched almost imperceptibly, as though he had caught a lingering scent in the air, and a sinister smile curled his lips.
"It seems this must be the successor Bai Yunzi entrusted with his legacy on his deathbed. Ten years, and only at the third layer of qi refining? Her aptitude is a little poor, but... with enough resources, reaching late-stage qi refining within a few years isn't impossible!"
The white-robed man glanced at the two mutilated, charred corpses on the ground. With a sweep of his sleeve, both bodies and the charred limbs scattered on the ground turned entirely to drifting ash.
"Heh heh, Bai Yunzi, oh, Bai Yunzi. Back then, you would rather have died than enable my foundation establishment. Yet now I've found your successor. Tell me, isn't this destiny? The Five Elements Eternal Spring Art you obtained was merely sewing a wedding gown for my [Geng Metal Earth Origin Art], wasn't it?"
"Your corpse had even been buried. I knew you must have left a successor before you died!"
"Since this woman received your dying legacy, she presumably only cultivated the three kinds of spells you mastered: water, fire, and wood. The five elements origin power refined that way is bound to lean toward certain elements... which happens to be perfect for forging my five elements Dao foundation!"
As he finished speaking, the white-robed man's smile grew brilliant, and he suddenly patted a black pouch at his waist.
Chirp, chirp!
The next instant, a white sparrow flew out of the black pouch at his waist, circled him several times, and landed on his shoulder, its tiny, bean-sized eyes brimming with intelligence.
"Spirit Sparrow, go. Take me to that woman."
The white-robed man gave the white sparrow on his shoulder an order. The sparrow tilted its head, then flew into the forest.
"This time, I won't let you escape again..."
The white-robed man stepped forward, a cloud forming beneath his feet as he followed the white sparrow.
Lu Mingyue knew nothing of this.
She did not even know that a special sparrow had set its sights on her. There were plenty of birds in Ten-Mile Forest, and along the way, she had even encountered quite a few fierce beasts, including tigers and black bears.
Intent on leaving the Great Ye Dynasty, Lu Mingyue did not waste time along the way and naturally left those little animals alone.
Finally, after five days had passed, she saw an enormous city.
It was three or four times larger than Yumen City, which had a population of a hundred thousand.

"So that's Cangzhou Prefectural City..."
Looking at the ancient city crouched on the horizon like a colossal beast, Lu Mingyue felt a measure of awe toward this unfamiliar world. After some thought, she followed the crowd toward it.
As a border city of the Great Ye Dynasty, Cangzhou Prefectural City did not permit ordinary people from inside or outside the city to pass through. Only merchant caravans from the two sides could come and go.
Of course, those caravans could not use the main city gates, either. They could only pass through a small side gate.
This was to prevent an enemy army from charging straight through the pass if a neighboring country attacked while too many civilians were gathered at the main gates.
A small gate barely wide enough for a single carriage to pass through meant that even if a neighboring army invaded, once the city lowered the gate bar, no number of attackers could break in through that entrance.
Even so, it would not be easy for Lu Mingyue to leave the Great Ye Dynasty through this gate.
Every caravan leaving the city, whether from the Great Ye Dynasty or a neighboring country, had to register and have its household registration and travel permits inspected.
Lu Mingyue had household registration, but no travel permit.
Yumen City lay within the country, so entry and departure were unrestricted, and there was no need to inspect travel permits. Here in Cangzhou Prefectural City, however, anyone wishing to travel beyond the Great Ye Dynasty had to have their travel permit checked.
"Do I really have to fly straight out...?"
After entering Cangzhou Prefectural City, Lu Mingyue looked at the walls towering over ten zhang high and could not help hesitating.
