Background / History

Family and Revenge

Guo Ding grew up in a wealthy Yumen City household but lacked an innate Spirit Mansion. His family sought a secret method for opening an acquired, or houtian, Spirit Mansion so that he could become a cultivator. Despite their secrecy, powerful enemies exterminated the family. Guo Ding survived because he had been sent away beforehand 36.

An evil cultivator subsequently accepted him as a disciple and taught him the Yin Baleful Qi Condensation Art. After his master failed a breakthrough and died of old age, Guo Ding returned to Yumen City and tortured his family’s killers to death. The authorities initially tolerated his revenge, but pursued him once he began murdering others to cultivate demonic arts 36.

Repeated attacks by constables and volleys of crossbow bolts wounded him severely. Yang Qin rescued him and surrendered an Immortal Cultivation Technique to secure the cancellation of his arrest warrant. The authorities prohibited the pair from proceeding beyond Yumen City into Great Ye territory, permitting only stays of up to half a year near Cangzhou Prefectural City 36.

Partnership with Yang Qin

Grateful for Yang Qin’s rescue and moved by their similar histories, Guo Ding became her Dao Companion. They spent periods in Cangzhou Prefectural City selecting targets, then accompanied them beyond the pass to rob them 36.

The couple usually waited for rogue cultivators to attack their caravan before striking while both sides were unprepared. Rogue cultivators were their more frequent targets; when they murdered traveling companions, they left no survivors. Their victims eventually numbered over a hundred 36 37.

Appearance

  • Ordinary features and a kindly face: His appearance suggested an honest, approachable man 27.
  • Disarming expression: Introduced himself with an honest smile and friendly offers of mutual assistance 27.

Personality

Guo Ding concealed his criminal intentions beneath a courteous, reassuring manner. He presented himself and Yang Qin as inexperienced travelers and feigned nervousness during a bandit encounter. Meng Hai nevertheless detected the deception because Guo Ding’s breathing did not match his outward anxiety 27 28 29.

His caution coexisted with arrogance. Although meticulous about choosing victims and avoiding witnesses, he dismissed Yang Qin’s suspicions about Bai Zishan as the ordinary pride of a young cultivator. In battle, he called mortal escorts “ants” and treated their resistance as an insult to his dignity 32 36 37.

His love for Yang Qin was genuine. Her death distracted him from his attack and drove him to expend his last reserves on revenge against Bai Zishan 34.

Abilities & Skills

Yin Baleful Qi Condensation Art

His principal cultivation method, inherited from his unnamed master 36.

  • Condenses yin baleful Origin Power, which damages the practitioner’s internal organs and shortens lifespan 39.
  • Ranked higher than Lu Mingyue’s Five Elements Eternal Spring Art, but lacked its gentle, life-nourishing properties 39.

Yellow Springs Nightmare

A demonic spell that traps its targets in nightmares 31 32.

  • Used in the caravan ambush; Bai Zishan broke free before awakening Lu Mingyue 30 31.
  • Could be cast rapidly with a one-handed seal and a pointing gesture. Guo Ding incapacitated Meng Hai and three escorts during their charge 32.
  • Was not inescapable: Bai Zishan resisted it, while Lu Mingyue used Origin Power to awaken the affected escorts 31 32.

Yellow Springs Ghost Coffin

His trump card: a manifested black coffin with a powerful devouring force 33.

  • Required prolonged preparation—more than ten breaths during the caravan battle 32 33.
  • Pulled victims inside and reduced them to bones. It killed five Evergreen escorts 33 34.
  • Remained stationary when Lu Mingyue’s vines flung Guo Ding away; he later commanded it to fly 33 34.
  • Overwhelmed Lu Mingyue’s initial attempt to block its pull with Water Mirror Shield 33.
  • Consumed substantial Origin Power and dissolved immediately upon his death 34.

Fireball Technique

An ordinary offensive spell that Guo Ding could release from his mouth 32.

  • Produced a fireball four or five meters across against Meng Hai and the escorts 32.
  • Was blocked by Lu Mingyue’s Water Mirror Shield while most of his Origin Power was committed to preparing the Ghost Coffin 32.

Unnamed Black-Light Defense

A layer of black light protected his body during close combat 33.

  • Withstood iron-staff blows to his head and lower back, producing metallic clashes and rebounding force 32 33.
  • His protection did not remain sufficient throughout the battle: after his Origin Power dwindled, Meng Hai’s thrown staff struck him and sent him flying 33.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Journey Beyond the Pass

  • Joined Lu Mingyue, Yang Qin, and Bai Zishan in hiring the Evergreen Escort Agency for passage toward Taiping City. He and Yang Qin shared the first of three carriages 27.
  • Chose the agency because a fifth-layer rogue cultivator had previously targeted it. The couple expected to overpower that cultivator together 29.
  • Communicated secretly with Yang Qin by writing in each other’s palms. With Taiping City approaching, he decided to wait two more days before acting without their intended target’s appearance 29.

Caravan Ambush and Death

  • Attacked after the travelers retired for the night, using Yellow Springs Nightmare while Yang Qin controlled Netherworld Yin Soldiers 30 31.
  • Was interrupted by Meng Hai’s escorts and Lu Mingyue, whose vines suspended him upside down. His black-light defense withstood the escorts’ initial staff blows 32 33.
  • Completed the Yellow Springs Ghost Coffin and killed five escorts, but the repeated spell exchanges nearly exhausted his Origin Power 33 34.
  • After Bai Zishan fatally wounded Yang Qin, she used her remaining strength to shield Guo Ding from Meng Hai’s thrown staffs and urged him to flee 34.
  • Instead, he forced out enough Origin Power to activate the coffin against Bai Zishan. His weakened perception failed to detect Bai Zishan’s flying sword circling behind him, and he was decapitated 34.

Posthumous Legacy

  • Lu Mingyue stitched his head back onto his body and used her life-bound Corpse-Wrapping Cloth to obtain his memories, cultivation method, and spells 36.
  • His memories revealed that Bai Zishan had approached the couple first, helping overturn Lu Mingyue’s assumption that Bai had simply been another intended victim 36 37.
  • Lu Mingyue buried him separately from Yang Qin to avoid drawing attention to their remains 37.
  • She rejected his cultivation method because it harmed lifespan and switching methods would impede her progress, but studied Yellow Springs Nightmare and Yellow Springs Ghost Coffin 39.

Relationships

  • Yang Qin — Wife, Dao Companion, rescuer, and criminal partner. Their shared experiences brought them together; she protected him with her final spell 34 36 37.
  • Unnamed master — Evil cultivator who taught him the Yin Baleful Qi Condensation Art; died after failing to break through 36.
  • Bai Zishan — Prospective victim who approached the couple himself. Guo Ding underestimated him and was ultimately killed by his flying sword 34 36 37.
  • Lu Mingyue — Traveling companion and ambush victim who opposed him, then collected his remains and inherited his memories and techniques 27 32 36.
  • Meng Hai — Hired escort chief who detected his deception and fought him to protect the caravan. Guo Ding’s coffin killed five of Meng Hai’s disciples and relatives 29 32 34.
