Chapter 206: Forward!
Su Can arrived at the Meiluo Building. Sunlight streamed through spotless glass, and even the corridor floor had been mopped so clean that it reflected the light-steel-framed suspended ceiling overhead. Wisps of fluff occasionally drifted through the sunlit passage. The entire Shanghai headquarters of Facebook Chinese lay in a stillness without so much as a warm breeze, as though a great battle were approaching.
Uniformed guards stood at the entrance. They were military veterans from a professional domestic bodyguard company, and their upright bearing and resolute, forward-facing eyes gave anyone approaching the doors an immediate sense of security.
Given the emergency that might arise, Facebook Chinese was now strengthening security around its premises to prevent media outlets desperate for private information they could sensationalize from barging in.
Su Can and Li Pengyu entered the headquarters, and the young women at reception hurried to their feet. Perhaps it was the invisible tension within Facebook, or perhaps it was the arrival of Chairman Su-the highest decision-maker, whom everyone at Facebook Chinese now regarded as their pillar of strength-through the main entrance guarded by four professionals, but even their breathing grew strained.
Su Can gave the three young women a polite smile, then walked with Li Pengyu around the enormous, distinctive mural at the entrance and headed inside. Never before had passing employees been so prompt about greeting them.
"Chairman Su." "Assistant Li." "President Mu seems to be in a hurry to see you..." "President Liu is in his office too..."
It was not that discipline at Facebook was usually lax. Most of those present were simply homebodies, employees who had graduated in technical fields, statistics, mathematics, and other disciplines. Facebook's internal structure meant that it was not a company rife with fierce office politics, but a relatively open environment.
