Organization and Membership
Direct Line and Collateral Branches
The direct line uses the generational characters Cheng, Xian, Qi, and Ping, in that order. Zhou Qixing and Zhou Pingyuan belong to this line; collateral members do not necessarily follow its naming pattern 16 25.
Zhou Ming describes three routes into the collateral branches:
| Route | Requirements | Status and Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Descendants of hereditary servants | Children of families that have served the household for generations must possess spiritual roots, regardless of grade. | Granted the Zhou surname, admitted to the collateral branches, and permitted to learn basic lineage cultivation methods 25. |
| Joining with an outside household | Outside cultivators adopt the Zhou surname, bring their households into the lineage, and swear a Heart Demon Oath of loyalty for generations. | Status and resources depend on strength and contributions; descendants become Zhou collateral members 25. |
| Marriage without changing surname | A promising outside man marries a Zhou woman; all children take the Zhou surname and enter its genealogy. | The man is offered treatment equivalent to a core collateral member, including resources, methods, and protection 25. |
The third arrangement is presented specifically while Zhou Ming is recruiting Lu Zhao. Ming also claims that the children may apply to restore their father's surname upon adulthood. Lu Zhao regards this unfamiliar offer as a faction's attempt to bind his puppet-making skills to the household, rather than an uncomplicated benefit 25.
Guest Retainers
Guest retainers receive a monthly stipend and one pill appropriate to their cultivation. Their rank follows their Qi Refining stage 8.
| Retainer Rank | Cultivation Requirement | Monthly Spirit Stones |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest rank | Early-stage Qi Refining | 1 8 |
| Middle rank | Middle-stage Qi Refining | 2 8 |
| Upper rank | Late-stage Qi Refining | 4 8 |
- Housing: Lu Zhao receives a courtyard in the market, although its plot lacks access to spiritual-vein energy 1.
- Mining obligations: His cold-iron quota is ten jin; failing to deliver it can cost half a month's stipend 1.
- Associated minerals: Materials found alongside cold iron may be surrendered for half their market value 3.
- Garrison duties: Guards at Green Vine Ravine must compensate for spirit herbs destroyed by demonic beasts 8.
- Wartime service: Retainers can be summoned under threat of being declared traitors, then reassigned to military production or combat 39 41 47.
- Identification: Guest retainers carry wooden badges, while household members use gilded bronze badges. Household inspectors also wear the clan emblem on their cuffs 6.
Internal Factions
The household's nine prospective elders include Zhou Qiling and Zhou Qilan, whose followers compete for Lu Zhao's Puppet Art 49.
| Faction | Known Representatives | Documented Conduct |
|---|---|---|
| Zhou Qiling | Zhou Kang and Zhou Hua | Zhou Kang describes Qiling as having limits he will not cross. Zhou Hua openly seeks to place his youngest son under Lu Zhao's tutelage, offering a quasi-second-tier Ice Sword Talisman 48 49. |
| Zhou Qilan | Zhou Ming | Zhou Kang characterizes Qilan as ruthless and willing to use underhanded methods, advising Lu Zhao to avoid his faction 49. |
Zhou Qixing distinguishes the capable, talent-seeking senior leadership from the factional struggles beneath it. He says that being made a scapegoat in an earlier dispute left him tending poisonous herbs in Green Vine Ravine for fourteen years 27.
Territory and Resources
| Holding | Features and Function |
|---|---|
| Perching Cloud Mountain | True headquarters, thirty li from the Zhou Household Market. It possesses a second-tier spirit vein; the principal cave abodes lie halfway up the mountain and above 5 35. |
| Zhou Household Market | Built over a first-tier superior-grade spirit vein. A second-tier Spirit-Locking Formation restricts its spiritual energy to rented cave abodes 5. |
| Cold Iron Mine | Produces first-tier superior-grade cold iron, alongside materials such as cold jade stone and Ice-Congealing Stone. Its severe cold and Spirit-Devouring Rats make mining hazardous 1 3 4. |
| Green Vine Ravine | Spirit-herb production site and retainer garrison, thirty li from the market. Its spiritual spring provides better cultivation conditions than the Cold Pool, but Ink-Scaled Snakes threaten the herb fields 8. |
| Blue Stone Market | One of the holdings attacked during the Tianfang Zhao Family's opening raids; the Zhou army later finds it devastated 39 42. |
Market and Trade
- Districts: The eastern, southern, and western districts primarily serve trade; the northern district is chiefly residential. Household members themselves live on the spirit mountain 5.
- Cold iron supply: Cold iron is the only first-tier superior-grade material that Lu Zhao can reliably buy in the household market; other materials of that grade depend on availability 33.
- Little Cloud Terrace Gathering: Held several times annually for Zhou Qi Refining disciples and invited associates. Exchanges include pills, artifacts, talismans, cultivation methods, and senior cultivators' notes 35.
- Cold Fragrance Pavilion: A venue reserved for major household events, including the exchange gathering 35.
- Nine Abyss Pavilion: Its Zhou shopkeepers purchase Lu Zhao's puppets and supply crafting materials. Zhou Hua succeeds Zhou Kang as shopkeeper during the war 23 48.
Military Forces
| Force or Asset | Composition and Role |
|---|---|
| Cloud-Pattern Cavalry | An elite force numbering only a few dozen, all late-stage Qi Refining cultivators. Its Cloud-Pattern Horse mounts are first-tier demonic beasts that almost all reach the middle first stage at adulthood, with exceptional speed and endurance 5. |
| Enforcement Team | Operates alongside the cavalry during the suppression of rogue cultivators and small lineages behind the northern front 42. |
| Hundred Arts Battalion | Wartime production unit commanded by Zhou Qixuan, combining household specialists and guest retainers 41. |
| Subordinate-lineage forces | Join the household's expeditionary army; Lu Zhao estimates the initial marching force at no fewer than two thousand cultivators 42. |
| Mountain-Splitting Ballistas | Large cold-iron siege artifacts engraved with formation-breaking runes. Three bombard Greenrock Market; more than thirty appear in the later all-out assault preparations 43 49. |
| Flowing Cloud Ship | Present among the forces assembled for the all-out assault on the Zhao Family Market District 49. |
| Flowing Cloud Sparrow Puppets | Provide aerial reconnaissance, camp surveillance, and early warning. Lu Zhao maintains them and supplies replacements 4 42. |
Hundred Arts Battalion
| Division | Wartime Work |
|---|---|
| Artifact Division | Produces magical artifacts and large equipment; Lu Zhao serves here as its only Puppet Master 41 47. |
| Pill Division | Produces Grain-Repelling, Spirit-Recovery, and Spring-Rejuvenation Pills 47. |
| Formation Division | Prepares formation plates and supports the camp's formations; Chen Moyang serves in this division 41 47. |
| Talisman Division | Produces and stockpiles consumable talismans 42 47. |
Battalion rules impose production quotas, work registration, restrictions on leaving assigned stations, and mandatory compliance with wartime requisitions. During the prolonged siege, participating cultivators also receive free daily access to Spirit-Gathering Formations according to their cultivation level 41 47.
History
Establishment in Changfeng
The household has been entrenched in Changfeng Commandery for hundreds of years. Even Zhao Renhai, an enemy elder, considers its reserves, prosperous market, guest retainers, and late-stage Qi Refining personnel substantially stronger than those of the Tianfang Zhao Family 38.
About a century before the Green Vine Ravine incident, several Zhou Foundation Establishment ancestors attacked a second-tier Qiulong Green Vine in what was then Qiulong Ravine. Their Three Powers Mountain-Burning Formation took a month to burn through its main root and damaged the formerly first-tier superior-grade spiritual spring. Buried remnant roots survived and later produced shoots that attracted Ink-Scaled Snakes 28.
Recruitment of Lu Zhao
Three years before the opening chapter, the household widely recruited retainers to prospect for a cold-iron vein. Lu Zhao joined at the second level of Qi Refining and received lowest-rank status 1.
His eventual success as a tiered Puppet Master filled a rare specialty: the household had no known tiered Puppet Master of its own. As his flying puppets became valuable, Zhou Kang supported his business while Zhou Ming attempted to recruit him through marriage 1 4 18 25.
Heavencloud Mountain Operations
News of Zhou Pingyuan's injury coincided with a large household search in the Heavencloud Mountain Range. Cavalry operations disrupted hunting on the northern slopes and made some demonic-beast materials harder to obtain 2 5 14.
Zhou Kang later confirms that cavalry losses and Pingyuan's recovery created an urgent need for reliable aerial reconnaissance. By the time he warns Lu Zhao to stockpile supplies, the cavalry has been operating in the mountains for almost two years, placing a sustained burden on household resources. The precise object of the search remains undisclosed 18 36.
War with the Tianfang Zhao Family
The Chu Household promises the Zhao Family a Foundation Establishment Pill and pledges pressure intended to keep Foundation Establishment cultivators out of the conflict. Zhao Deye consequently orders raids against Zhou subordinate lineages, markets, and mines, followed by withdrawal behind Tianfang's defensive formations 38.
After the attacks, the Zhou Household requisitions supplies, mobilizes affiliated families and retainers, and forms the Hundred Arts Battalion. Market patrols triple as prices rise sharply 39 41.
| Campaign Stage | Events |
|---|---|
| Northern deployment | The army reaches the ruined Blue Stone Market after five days and establishes a fortified camp. Cavalry and Enforcement Team operations kill nearby rogue cultivators and members of small lineages; Lu Zhao interprets this as eliminating threats to the army's rear 42. |
| Capture of Greenrock Market | Three days of bombardment break the Greenrock Mystic Light Formation. Zhao Yongfeng, Zhao Changhai, and Zhao Changyan escape using Minor Teleportation Talismans before Zhou forces take the market 43. |
| Advance on the main Zhao market | Following a month of repairs and recovery, the army resumes its advance toward the Zhao Family Market District, protected by a second-tier formation 46. |
| Prolonged siege | Hundred Arts personnel rotate into formation attacks. The barrier first visibly ripples in the sixth month and shows repeated disturbances after another month, but Zhou commanders maintain the existing attack frequency 47. |
| All-out assault preparations | Two thousand Qi Refining cultivators are organized into ten teams. The assembled force includes cavalry, the Enforcement Team, siege ballistas, the Flowing Cloud Ship, and aged late-stage cultivators including Zhou Kang 49. |
