Everyone was preparing to light a fire and cook. A full day and night of travel and fighting had left them all exhausted.

His voice was quiet, but it stopped everyone in their tracks.
The Nightmare Nekomata rose beside his legs, its eerie green slit pupils fixed on the distant night sky as a low growl rumbled in its throat.
Everyone in the Hope Convoy instantly readied themselves for battle.
A dark silhouette was rapidly approaching through the night sky.
It moved with astonishing speed. One moment, it was a vague outline on the horizon; the next, it was clearly visible.
It was a human figure with a pair of enormous wings spread behind her. But they were not feathered wings. They were shapes formed from some viscous black substance, gleaming eerily in the moonlight.
With every beat of those wings, black droplets flew from their edges, trailing long, thin streaks through the air before dispersing in the night wind.

The figure slammed into the ground dozens of meters ahead of the convoy like a meteor.
Dirt and gravel flew in every direction like cannonballs, striking the RVs with sharp metallic clatters.
The impact left a crater several meters across, with spiderweb cracks spreading outward from its edges in every direction.
Dust billowed into the sky, swallowing the figure completely.
