After buying the leafy greens, Pei Yi began searching for his second target.
"Green peppers, green peppers, green peppers." Pulling his shopping cart, Pei Yi began weaving through the vegetable section again.
The green peppers happened to be on sale that day. After finding them, Pei Yi let go of the shopping cart behind him again, rested both hands on the display in front of him, and stood on tiptoe.
Many elderly shoppers beside him were picking out green peppers.
As they watched the little boy who had suddenly appeared beside them, their hands slowed. They turned to look at him curiously.
Pei Yi carefully picked through the green peppers in front of him, oblivious to the gazes around him.
Pei Yi did his best to choose large green peppers with no damage on the outside.
Unfortunately, he might have arrived a little late. The previous wave of customers had already picked out most of the good peppers, and Pei Yi spotted several damaged ones.
"Child, did you come grocery shopping all by yourself?" an elderly lady carrying a shopping basket asked curiously.
Pei Yi nodded gently. "Yes, Grandma."
"Wow, you're so impressive! Such a capable boy, coming out to buy groceries all by yourself at your age!"
"Yes, yes! You're buying green peppers, right? Here, Grandpa has a bag for you."
"No, no, take Grandma's. All the ones I picked are big and undamaged."
Without another word, the first elderly lady who had spoken to Pei Yi shoved her bag of green peppers straight into his arms.
"I can't. These are yours, Grandma." Holding the large bag of green peppers, Pei Yi tried to give it back.
"It's all right, child. Grandma has a whole plot of them growing at home." The elderly lady proudly straightened her back.
