Background
Akagi played basketball alongside Tomokazu Godai in middle school. Even then, his exceptional height and strength distinguished him from less naturally gifted players such as Godai 25.
By his third year at Shohoku, Akagi and vice-captain Kiminobu Kogure had spent three years working toward the National Tournament. Akagi regarded his final high-school season as his last opportunity to realize his dream of conquering the nation 4 35. Before the arrival of Shohoku’s standout newcomers, the team’s offense revolved around his low-post positioning and operated at a slow pace 4.
Appearance
- Build: Extremely tall and powerfully built, with a massive frame, broad shoulders, and large hands 3 20 94.
- Mature appearance: Looks older than his actual age; Shinichi Maki jokingly points to him when Sakuragi mocks Maki for looking old 37 81.
- Uniform: Wears Shohoku’s number 4 jersey 9.
- Injury-related features: Uses crutches and thick bandaging around his left ankle during the later National Tournament rounds 118 132.
Personality
Akagi is a stern captain who expects basketball to be treated seriously. He initially rejects Sakuragi because he considers the newcomer disrespectful toward the sport, accepting him only after Ryota Kudo takes responsibility for him 3. His discipline can be physical: he punches Sakuragi on the head and drags him away when his behavior disrupts the team 11 28.
Despite his imposing composure, Akagi feels considerable pressure. Nervousness causes his opening jump-ball violation against Shoyo, while his pride drives him to challenge Jun Uozumi directly after losing their early exchanges 29 59. He is also openly emotional when years of effort begin to pay off, crying after Shohoku defeats Kainan 44.
His sense of responsibility extends beyond results. He considers protecting his teammates part of his duty and is prepared to intervene when Kudo deliberately attracts Toyotama’s aggression 91. An excellent student, he offers academic help and personally pleads for makeup-exam opportunities when four teammates fail multiple subjects 35 62 64.
Akagi is far less cautious about his own health. He repeatedly asks to play through serious ankle pain, but becomes increasingly willing to leave the game to his teammates when they can win without him 40 103 146. Away from basketball, he dotes on Haruko, is unconcerned about his own looks, and privately longs for romance despite never having dated 25 56 81.
Abilities & Skills
Post Offense and Gorilla Dunk
Akagi uses strength, positioning, and forceful turns to create close-range scoring opportunities 25 39.
- Backs down Koichiro Nango before turning into a Gorilla Dunk 25.
- Finishes Kudo’s lob through Jun Koizumi’s interference with a two-handed dunk 97.
- Converts a dunk through contact and makes the accompanying free throw against Aiwa 102.
- Uses a fake hook shot and a turn in the opposite direction to score a short floater over Masashi Kawata 124.
- Can be overpowered by stronger opponents: Uozumi suppresses his post attack, while Hiroshi Morishige forces him backward 59 77.
Rim Protection and Gorilla Block
Akagi covers a large area inside and serves as Shohoku’s principal defender beneath the basket 38 103.
- Leaves Kazuma Takasago to stop Maki’s penetration, then recovers to reject Takasago with a Gorilla Block 38.
- Combines with Kudo to double-team Morishige and force Meihou to attempt a midrange shot through another player 77.
- Shifts more attention toward defense and rebounding once Shohoku has abundant scoring options 84.
- Has difficulty contesting Toru Hanagata’s high-release fadeaway 29.
- His injured ankle severely limits his ability to resist Kawata’s post moves or follow him away from the basket 125 127.
Rebounding and Jump Balls
Akagi combines physical strength with effective boxing-out technique to secure position beneath the basket 103.
- Claims a contested rebound between Takasago and Maki 39.
- Wins tips that initiate Shohoku’s rehearsed opening fast break 33 38.
- Beats Aiwa center Koizumi clearly at the opening jump 93.
- Is not unbeatable: nerves disrupt his first tip against Shoyo, and Uozumi wins the opening jump in their final-four meeting 29 59.
Screening and Interior Passing
Akagi contributes without needing to finish possessions himself, using his size to free teammates and passing out of defensive pressure 20 94.
- Sets a solid screen that gives Kudo an open three-pointer against Takahata 20.
- Finds Sakuragi’s baseline cut with a two-handed bounce pass through Aiwa’s double-team 94.
- Screens Kazunari Fukatsu at the high post, allowing Ryota Miyagi to advance against Sannoh’s full-court pressure 124.
Leadership and Analysis
Akagi organizes practices, communicates tournament information, and steadies Shohoku during distractions 3 16 53.
- Keeps training orderly even while injured and seated courtside in Coach Anzai’s absence 47.
- Reviews the team’s needs before bed, identifying paint protection and rebounding as his most important contributions 84.
- Restores teammates’ confidence through his return against Sannoh, even before scoring 124.

University Recruitment and National Preparations
- Fukuzawa Sports University: Kazuo Karasawa considers Akagi as a replacement for graduating center Shota Sugiyama. Karasawa initially offers a recruitment place contingent on Kudo’s future enrollment; Kudo refuses the condition as disrespectful to Akagi. Karasawa then says a national-quarterfinal finish should make Akagi’s recruitment viable 69.
- Shizuoka training camp: Akagi dominates Jousei center Shuji Fujisawa across three friendlies, but is subsequently overpowered by Meihou’s Morishige 77.
- Combined-team practice: Leads Shohoku against a joint Shoyo–Ryonan lineup, arguing that they must overcome opponents of that caliber to succeed nationally 82 83.
