Background / History
Muzan is the first demon, whose blood can transform humans into man-eating demons. His rule and the Demon Slayer Corps’ struggle against him span roughly a thousand years. He maintains control over his descendants through his blood, including a curse that can destroy demons who speak his name 53 131 188.
Centuries before confronting Rokuya, Muzan nearly died fighting Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Yoriichi cut him into pieces and left burns that remained unhealed for hundreds of years. The encounter also gave Tamayo an opportunity to escape Muzan’s control. Muzan subsequently ordered Kokushibo to eliminate every swordsman who knew Sun Breathing, together with anyone connected to them 53 92 222.
Muzan recruited powerful humans into his service. He offered Kokushibo the endless lifespan needed to continue pursuing swordsmanship, and forcibly transformed Hakuji into Akaza after discovering the aftermath of his massacre at a swordsmanship dojo 320 325.
His overriding objective is to overcome sunlight and become a “perfect being.” He searches for the Blue Spider Lily as a possible solution, personally investigating a reported sighting on Mount Kumotori. Nezuko Kamado’s eventual immunity to sunlight gives him a new target 185 281 283.
Appearance
Muzan usually presents himself as an elegant, handsome young man with a slender build and deathly pale skin 91 185.
- Hair: Short, slightly curly, and black 185.
- Eyes: Plum-red or crimson, with vertical slit pupils 185 305.
- Usual clothing: A tailored black suit and white dress hat; he also wears a black kimono during a Twelve Kizuki gathering 91 220.
- Combat mutations: His arms, fingers, back, and thighs can produce whips, spikes, and tentacles 92 186 331 333.
- Berserk appearance: Dark red skin markings, an enlarged mouth reaching toward his ears, and exposed sharp fangs 331.
Personality
Muzan regards humans as inferior creatures and treats most swordsmen as disposable nuisances. Before fighting Rokuya, he considers Yoriichi the sole exception among the many Hashira he has encountered. His cruelty extends beyond feeding: he attacks the Kamado household to relieve his frustration and deliberately tries to turn Nezuko into a demon so that she will slaughter her own family 91 186.
His arrogance conceals an intense fear of death. When Rokuya first disrupts his regeneration, Muzan immediately abandons the fight and flees. Later encounters leave him with recurring nightmares, while Sun Breathing and Bright Red Nichirin Swords revive his terror of Yoriichi 92 219 330.
He routinely turns fear and humiliation into violence against his subordinates. Doma’s report about Rokuya provokes a prolonged beating because Muzan interprets the account as mockery. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge danger tactically: he explicitly forbids the Upper Ranks from confronting Rokuya alone and sacrifices substantial essential blood to strengthen them 221 222 223.
Abilities & Skills
Demon Creation and Blood Enhancement
Muzan’s blood mutates human cells, creating demons and supplying the foundation of their supernatural abilities 117 188.
- Forced transformation: Injects blood through wounds, as demonstrated against Nezuko and Hakuji 186 320.
- Essential blood: Uses highly concentrated blood from his own essence to force existing demons beyond their previous limits 223.
- Dangerous dosage: Concentrated original demon blood can leave a recipient near death; Nezuko survives an interrupted injection while resisting its mutation 188.
- Enhanced subordinates: His blood strengthens Daki’s sashes, increases Akaza’s power, and enables Doma’s new Blood Demon Art, Ice Snow Lotus Heaven 242 314 317.
Blood Curse and Bodily Control
Muzan exercises direct authority over demons carrying his blood 53 320.
- Name curse: A demon who speaks “Muzan Kibutsuji” can suffer uncontrolled cellular growth, with arms tearing the body apart from within 53.
- Possession: Seizes Akaza’s body and forces it to resume fighting after Akaza accepts defeat 320.
- Memory transmission: Projects images of Rokuya and Tanjiro into the Upper Ranks’ memories to identify his targets 222.
- Limits: Tamayo severs her blood connection through centuries of bodily modification. Akaza ultimately resists Muzan’s control with Koyuki’s intervention 53 320.
Blood-Linked Perception
Muzan can gather information through the blood he leaves within other demons 219 281.
- Senses the Twelve Kizuki’s locations, reads their thoughts, and shares their vision 281.
- Receives blood-borne memories of Tanjiro using Sun Breathing during Final Selection 219.
- Sees Nezuko standing unharmed in sunlight through Hantengu’s eyes immediately before Hantengu’s death 281 282.
Regeneration and Survival
Muzan regenerates limbs and extensive bodily damage at extraordinary speed. His body contains numerous hearts and brains, and decapitation alone does not kill him 187 294.
- Decapitation survival: Remains alive after Rokuya severs his head 187 192.
- Rapid reconstruction: Regrows severed limbs and tentacles during combat 333.
- Splitting escape: Can attempt to divide his body into countless pieces to flee 294 336.
- Finite endurance under pressure: Sustained destruction eventually drains his energy and slows regeneration despite his exceptional stamina 336.
Flesh Whips and Tentacles
Muzan reshapes his body into long-reaching biological weapons 92 186 221.
- Flesh Whips: Produces multiple thick whips from his back to surround opponents 92.
- Dark Red Thorn Whips: Barbed weapons capable of crossing dozens of meters at speeds beyond sound 221.
- Finger transformations: Converts his fingers into barbed whips or sharp bone spikes 186 333.
- Tubular tentacles: Generates heavier appendages during his berserk transformation, overwhelming the Hashira’s defensive formation 331.
- Poison: His tentacle attacks carry deadly poison; poisonous blood can also spray from his wounds 299 336.
- Consumption: Absorbs a Lower Rank through a spiked tentacle, leaving no blood behind 221.
Sonic Boom
Muzan expels compressed, high-pressure air from his mouth in an omnidirectional sonic attack 333.
- Injures and scatters the surrounding Demon Slayers.
- Temporarily incapacitates them, allowing him to regenerate.
- Creates an opening to prepare a battlefield-wide follow-up attack 333.
Infinity Castle Support
Muzan relies on Nakime’s spatial Blood Demon Art, rather than a demonstrated personal spatial technique 128 187 220.
- Nakime opens portals to retrieve Muzan or endangered Upper Ranks 128 187.
- The castle’s shifting terrain can separate the Corps and isolate Rokuya from the main battle 301 329 331.
- Yushiro’s attempt to control Nakime threatens this territorial advantage 328.
Weaknesses & Countermeasures
| Weakness / Countermeasure | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sunlight | Carbonizes his exposed flesh, breaks down his cells, and reduces his body and tentacles to ash 337. |
| Yoriichi’s red blade | Leaves burns that fail to heal for hundreds of years and causes lasting psychological trauma 92. |
| Bright Red Nichirin Swords | Suppress cellular activity at severed areas, slowing regeneration and inflicting severe burning pain 330. |
| Rokuya’s arcana-infused attacks | Residual sacred and dark-blue energy destroys cells and obstructs regeneration 92 186 305. |
| Sustained bodily destruction | Forces repeated regeneration until Muzan’s energy reserves are nearly exhausted 336. |
Tamayo and Shinobu’s Medicine
Tamayo and Shinobu develop a staged medicine using Rokuya’s blood, concentrated wisteria toxin, and Tamayo’s knowledge of Muzan’s cells. Its delayed effects are designed to exploit his attempts to break down the initial humanization component 294.
| Stage | Intended Effect |
|---|---|
| Humanization | Converts demon cells into human cells, forcing Muzan to expend enormous energy counteracting it 294. |
| Accelerated aging | Ages him at a rate of tens of thousands of years per minute 294. |
| Anti-splitting | Locks his cells together to prevent escape by fragmentation; this effect is confirmed during the final battle 294 336. |
| Cellular destruction | Triggers cellular self-destruction and stops regeneration 294. |
Relationships
- Rokuya / Takanashi Rokuno — Principal opponent. Repeatedly wounds Muzan beyond his ability to regenerate normally, becoming a source of terror comparable to Yoriichi 92 187 219.
- Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Historical near-killer. His swordsmanship and red blade leave Muzan with centuries of physical damage and fear 91 92.
- Tamayo — Former victim and subordinate who escapes his control. She blames him for turning her into a demon and tricking her into eating her husband and children, then develops medicine to destroy him 53 294.
- Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Leader of the opposing Demon Slayer Corps. Rejects Muzan’s claims of perfection and helps stage the estate ambush 305.
- Nezuko Kamado — Forcibly transformed victim who later becomes his highest-priority capture target after conquering sunlight 186 283.
- Tanjiro Kamado — Targeted as a surviving Sun Breathing user and Nezuko’s protector 219 222 223.
- Nakime — Spatial-support subordinate who controls the Infinity Castle and rescues him from Rokuya 187 220.
- Kokushibo — Long-serving Upper Rank One. Muzan relies on him while questioning his failure to eradicate Sun Breathing 222.
- Doma — Upper Rank Two and a frequent outlet for Muzan’s rage; tortured for reporting Rokuya’s strength 221 222.
- Akaza / Hakuji — Forcibly recruited subordinate. Muzan later possesses his body to prevent him from accepting death, but Akaza breaks free 320.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Confrontation with Rokuya
Muzan encounters Rokuya after executing an incompetent subordinate in the wilderness. Initially dismissing him as another insignificant Hashira, he attacks with flesh whips. Rokuya forcibly activates an incompletely unlocked Invincible Might and cuts across Muzan’s chest with the Shura Greatblade 91 92.
The wound’s residual energy prevents immediate regeneration, frightening Muzan into fleeing. Back in the Infinity Castle, he summons the surviving Lower Ranks and orders them to find and kill the silver-haired swordsman 92 93.
Attack on the Kamado Household
While searching Mount Kumotori for the Blue Spider Lily, Muzan attacks the Kamado family to vent his frustration. He injects Nezuko with blood and prepares to kill Kie and Takeo, but Rokuya arrives and severs both his arms 185 186.
Rokuya overwhelms and beheads him, only to discover that decapitation is insufficient. Nakime retrieves Muzan’s severed head and body through a portal. Rokuya sends Returning Blade: Flame Tiger’s Roar through the closing entrance, severely burning Muzan and igniting part of the Infinity Castle 187 192.
Purge of the Lower Ranks
A year after the Mount Kumotori defeat, Muzan remains haunted by Rokuya. Blood-borne memories reveal Tanjiro using Sun Breathing, compounding his fear that two life-threatening enemies might join forces 219 220 222.
Muzan destroys the four remaining Lower Ranks and brutally punishes Doma for recounting his own encounter with Rokuya. He then orders the Upper Ranks to kill Rokuya and Tanjiro, warns them against fighting Rokuya alone, and strengthens six of them with essential blood 221 222 223.
Swordsmith Village and Nezuko’s Sunlight Immunity
After Hantengu discovers the Swordsmith Village, Muzan orders him and Gyokko to kill everyone there 258.
Through Hantengu’s dying vision, Muzan learns that Nezuko can withstand sunlight. He summons Kokushibo, Doma, and Akaza, orders them to bring her to him, and renews his demand for Rokuya’s destruction. His forces pursue Nezuko’s escort as the survivors evacuate the village 281 283 284.
Ubuyashiki Estate Ambush
Muzan arrives at the Ubuyashiki Estate declaring that the Corps will end that night. Rokuya detonates buried explosives infused with magic, shielding himself and Kagaya while the blast destroys Muzan’s limbs and hinders his regeneration 305.
Tamayo emerges from the burning ruins, pierces Muzan’s abdomen, and introduces medicine into his body. The swordsmen converge on him as the confrontation moves into the Infinity Castle 305 306.
Final Battle and Dawn
Inside the castle, Muzan confronts the exhausted swordsmen while Rokuya is isolated on a high platform. The Corps’ coordinated attacks and Bright Red Nichirin Swords briefly restrain him, but his berserk transformation and sonic boom overturn their advantage 329 330 331 333.
After rejoining the battle, Rokuya activates the fully unlocked Invincible Might for eight minutes. He repeatedly destroys Muzan’s muscles and nerves while deliberately avoiding direct strikes to his hearts, exhausting his regeneration. Muzan attempts to split apart, but Tamayo’s medicine prevents it. When Rokuya’s transformation expires, the other swordsmen resume the assault 336.
Dawn exposes Muzan’s torso to sunlight. His flesh carbonizes, and even the tentacles he extends to shield himself turn to ash. Following the final battle, the surviving swordsmen accept that demons no longer exist, and Nezuko is fully human again 337 339.
