Background / History
Early Life and Return to Martial Arts
Yamcha was originally a desert bandit who became acquainted with Son Goku through a fight. He once struggled with an extreme fear of women and later became romantically involved with Bulma. By the time Ye Chuan encounters him, he has abandoned martial arts for professional baseball and is practicing his swing alone in the desert 365 366.
Ye Chuan confronts him with knowledge of his past, his insecurities, and his feelings for Bulma, then offers him a chance to regain the strength to stand beside Goku. Yamcha smashes his baseball bat, quits his career, sells his luxury cars and mansions, and follows the aura Ye Chuan deliberately leaves behind. After crossing deserts and snowy mountains, he reaches God’s Lookout and asks for power 366.
Training and Raditz’s Invasion
Ye Chuan places Yamcha in a ten-times-gravity environment, repeatedly restoring him with Senzu Beans whenever exhaustion brings him close to collapse. Unbeknownst to Yamcha, the beans also contain traces of Ye Chuan’s Saiyan blood. After adapting to the gravity, he must destroy hundreds of undead opponents; his success earns Ye Chuan’s approval and establishes their master–disciple relationship 367.
When Raditz threatens Earth, Yamcha volunteers to fight him alone. His redesigned Wolf Fang Fist allows him to evade Raditz’s attacks, while a compressed ki projectile pierces the Saiyan’s shoulder. Raditz’s counterattack nearly kills him, but Ye Chuan secretly casts High-Tier Attribute Enhancement, enabling Yamcha’s final attack to pierce Raditz’s heart. Before dying, Raditz transmits information about Earth and its Dragon Balls to the other Saiyans 368 369.
Saiyan Invasion
To prepare Yamcha for the next invasion, Ye Chuan subjects him to two years of training inside a counterfeit Hyperbolic Time Chamber, with only two days passing outside. Yamcha first struggles to survive against Death Knights, then learns the improved Spirit Ball and faces frost-dragon skeletons and Dreadlords. After leaving the chamber, he continues training alone for the remainder of the year 369 370.
During the invasion, Yamcha kills all six Saibamen with one splitting Spirit Ball, avoiding the humiliating death Ye Chuan had foreseen for him. He then shatters Nappa’s right arm, leaving him defeated; Vegeta kills Nappa afterward. Vegeta overwhelms Yamcha, but Yamcha’s final Spirit Ball strikes his arm and diverts the Galick Gun away from its intended path 371.
After Vegeta’s defeat, Yamcha stops Krillin from killing him, and Goku also asks that he be spared. Ye Chuan heals Yamcha and takes him toward Planet Namek, beginning hundred-times-gravity training aboard Dr. Brief’s spaceship 372.
Planet Namek
On Namek, Yamcha kills Cui and Dodoria, then defeats Sabo’s transformed state with a measured power level of 22,000. Against the Ginyu Force, he uses terrain manipulation and repeated Spirit Balls to exhaust Recoome before finishing him with Wolf Fang Fist. He also evades Burter and Jeice’s combined assault, moving faster than Burter 373 374.
Yamcha and Vegeta briefly unite against Frieza, but their attacks prove ineffective. Frieza pierces Yamcha’s chest with a Death Beam; Ye Chuan secretly resurrects him, removes him from the battlefield, and heals him aboard Bulma’s concealed spaceship. This ordeal fully awakens his Saiyan bloodline 376.
Despite his fear, Yamcha returns to fight Frieza and grows stronger through repeated near-fatal injuries. He transforms into a Super Saiyan alongside Goku, and the pair coordinate their attacks against Frieza. Both choose to remain on Namek when the others are evacuated. Yamcha counters Frieza’s final attack with a Kamehameha, while Ye Chuan prevents the planet’s destruction 377 378.
Androids and Cell Games
After returning to Earth, Yamcha continues training and eventually defeats Super Saiyan Vegeta in a sparring match. During the android crisis, he easily defeats Android 19 and later overwhelms Android 18 with a golden Wolf Fang Fist, prompting Android 17 to withdraw with her and Android 16. When Ye Chuan returns, Yamcha announces that he and Bulma have had a child 378 379.
At the Cell Games, Yamcha destroys all seven Cell Juniors with Galactic Starburst Wolf. He later reveals Super Saiyan 2 and fights Perfect Cell evenly for several rounds, but his stamina and combat experience cannot sustain the contest. Ye Chuan catches him after he falls, blocks Cell’s finishing attack, and destroys Cell after Yamcha asks him to intervene 381 383 384.
World Martial Arts Tournament and Majin Buu
Yamcha continues training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber throughout the following seven peaceful years. At the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, his strength impresses Piccolo and Vegeta. When Spopovich attempts to kill Videl, Yamcha intervenes and vaporizes him with a Kamehameha 384 385.
He accompanies Supreme Kai Shin to Babidi’s spaceship and kills Yakon in complete darkness by sensing the creature’s movements. Vegeta, increasingly jealous of Yamcha, accepts Babidi’s power and challenges him. Their battle supplies enough energy to awaken Majin Buu 385 386.
Yamcha confronts Fat Buu as a Super Saiyan 3, but retreats after several hours when his stamina runs out. He later fights Super Buu at the Lookout to buy time for Goten and Trunks to fuse 387 388.
For the final battle, Ye Chuan takes Yamcha, Goku, and Kid Buu to the Sacred World of the King Kai. Yamcha and Goku fuse into Yamute and defeat Kid Buu. After separating, Yamcha kneels before Ye Chuan and thanks him for saving him from his former fate 389.
Appearance
- Normal appearance: Long black hair, dark eyes, and several facial scars; wears a baseball uniform when first encountered 365 367.
- After training: Develops sharply defined muscles and acquires extensive scars during his two years of chamber training 367 370.
- Super Saiyan 2: Surrounded by a golden aura threaded with blue lightning 383.
- Super Saiyan 3: Golden hair grows to his waist, his eyebrows disappear, and his brow ridge becomes more pronounced; his eyes turn deep emerald green 387.
Personality
Yamcha initially masks deep insecurity with pride. He reacts irritably when Ye Chuan criticizes his batting stance, but the exposure of his private fears quickly breaks his composure. Before fighting Raditz, he openly admits his jealousy of Goku and his companions, declaring that he would rather die honorably than remain a laughingstock in their shadows 366 368.
His renewed determination does not eliminate fear. Frieza’s killing blow leaves him terrified of returning to battle, and Ye Chuan uses Conqueror’s Haki to pressure him into going back. Nevertheless, Yamcha stands his ground once he returns, gradually developing the restrained confidence later noticed by Videl at the tournament 377 384.
He remains protective of Bulma and his companions, refuses to abandon Earth even when outmatched, and shows mercy by preventing Vegeta’s execution. His gratitude toward Ye Chuan endures despite the cruelty of his training, culminating in a deeply respectful farewell after Kid Buu’s defeat 371 372 389.
Abilities & Skills
Wolf Fang Fist
Yamcha’s signature martial art is extensively redesigned by Ye Chuan, combining evasive footwork, close combat, and concentrated energy attacks 367 368.
- Evasive movement: Slips through Raditz’s attacks without being touched and creates openings against stronger opponents 368.
- Modified Wolf Fang Fist: Produces a giant silver-white wolf of ki capable of tearing apart undead enemies 367.
- Point-Blank Piercing: Fires an intensely compressed spiral ki bullet from his fingertips; penetrates Raditz’s armor and shoulder 369.
- Galactic Starburst Wolf: Manifests a massive energy wolf that later swallows and destroys all seven Cell Juniors simultaneously 370 381.
- Super Saiyan application: Uses a golden Wolf Fang Fist to overwhelm Android 18 379.
New Spirit Ball
Ye Chuan’s improved version fuses the user’s will with ki, granting precise control over the projectile’s trajectory and form rather than merely launching a ball of energy 370.
- Splits into multiple smaller projectiles, potentially several dozen, to surround a target 370.
- Loops behind enemies after apparently missing; kills six Saibamen with six simultaneous strikes 371.
- Delivers concentrated penetrating force, shattering Nappa’s arm and overpowering Cui’s projectile 371 373.
- Alters terrain to disrupt an opponent’s footing, as demonstrated against Recoome 374.
- Can redirect a larger attack by striking its user, as with Vegeta’s Galick Gun 371.
- Cannot overcome Fat Buu’s near-limitless regeneration through damage alone 387.
Saiyan Bloodline and Transformations
Although born an Earthling, Yamcha gains Saiyan traits through Ye Chuan’s secret blood infusion 367 376.
- Near-death growth: Recovers with increased power after severe injuries, with especially dramatic gains during his battles against Frieza 372 376 377.
- Combat endurance: His awakened bloodline allows him to struggle back from repeated near-fatal wounds against Frieza 377.
- Transformations: Attains Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3 377 383 387.
- Stamina limit: His power can match Perfect Cell or Fat Buu temporarily, but exhaustion prevents him from sustaining those battles 383 387.
Kamehameha
- Counters Frieza’s final attack during the battle on Namek 378.
- Vaporizes Spopovich to stop him from killing Videl 384 385.
Energy Sensing and Tactical Combat
- Detects the shared origin of Spopovich and Yamu’s evil auras 385.
- Fights without sight by sensing Yakon’s heartbeat, breathing, and minute muscular movements 385.
- Uses mobility, terrain destruction, and persistent projectiles to exhaust Recoome instead of contesting his durability directly 374.
Fusion Dance
- Performs the Fusion Dance with Goku to become Yamute, combining Goku’s power with Yamcha’s techniques 389.
- Yamute overwhelms Kid Buu and destroys him with a Spirit Bomb; the two fighters separate afterward 389.
