Background / History

Masley trained under an unnamed Druid teacher, who awarded him the Moonshadow Staff when he became a full-fledged Druid. He was familiar with the Night Elves’ practice of pairing frontline feral Druids with supporting archers in Ashenvale, Darkshore, and Felwood 8 19.

Although proud of the victory over the demons at Mount Hyjal, Masley regretted missing the battle. By the twenty-first year after the Dark Portal opened, he was imprisoned by Dragonmaw Orcs at Ragefang Camp, where he met Diago Asnar 6 7 9.

Appearance

  • Purple skin and long ears: His hearing is sharp enough to catch Diago’s quiet remarks during their infiltration of Blackrock Depths 37 38.
  • Small horns concealed beneath his hair: Masley reveals them as a blessing associated with Cenarius and Elune when explaining his divine mission 34.
  • Lower-back scar: Garrosh’s axe leaves a large, earthworm-like scar across his purple skin. The surface closes before the deeper injury finishes healing 43.

Personality

Masley is energetic, adventurous, and impatient with the reserve of other Night Elves. He dismisses Darnassus as forests and “old fossils,” eagerly favors dangerous routes, and initially follows Diago’s plans without asking many questions. His optimism can become naïveté: at Kargath, he insists that the New Horde’s Orcs should be different, underestimating the hostility left by earlier wars 9 13 18 23.

His compassion is grounded in Elune’s teachings. The suffering of enslaved miners moves him to urge a rescue, while the destruction of Searing Gorge pains him so directly that he retaliates by smashing mining infrastructure. That compassion does not prevent necessary violence; in battle, he can be ferocious and willing to risk death alongside his companion 8 23 24.

He enjoys food, alcohol, treasure, and teasing Diago. He devours the hunter’s cooking, nearly drinks through a tavern’s stock during their stay at Thorium Point, and can become absorbed in looting. His curiosity also extends to old artwork and architecture, sometimes distracting him during dangerous missions 10 18 30 31 45.

Travel and injury gradually temper his recklessness. After surviving Matolius’s ambush and months of adventuring, he becomes more resilient and less rash, increasingly asking how to proceed before acting 26 36.

Abilities & Skills

Shapeshifting

Masley specializes in close combat rather than the spellcasting focus of a Balance Druid 19.

  • Great bear: Grants the strength to crush an Orc guard, batter groups of enemies, and carry an unconscious Diago to safety 7 8 12.
  • Natural protection: Thick fur, tough hide, and heavy fat reduce incoming damage. Organized polearm formations can still hold him off, and Garrosh’s axes inflict a severe wound 8 42 43.
  • Black panther: Supports rapid travel, claw attacks, and stealth. He maintains his distance from pursuing Dark Iron musketeers and later steals General Angerforge’s tablet undetected 15 37 49.
  • Stealth limits: Concealment does not prevent physical contact; passing jailers nearly discover him after brushing against his hidden body 38.

Plant Manipulation and Entangling Roots

Masley describes basic plant manipulation as a simple Druid technique rather than a substantial spell 7.

  • Grows a seed into a shoot in his palm and fashions a plant-made key to unlock his cage 6 7.
  • Uses previously scattered vine seeds to cast an instantaneous group version of Entangling Roots. The ordinary version requires casting time 43.
  • Briefly catches Garrosh’s foot, giving Diago time to evade a killing blow. Garrosh tears the vines apart in less than half a second 43.
  • Magically treats the ironwood used for Diago’s rifle stock; the reinforcement later prevents an axe strike from splitting it 30 43.

Healing

  • Heals Diago’s injuries during their escape from captivity and again while carrying him away from Dragonmaw pursuers 7 13.
  • Resets his own dislocated elbow and casts Healing Touch, restoring much of its function without entirely removing the pain 26.
  • Provides rear-line healing while his injured arm prevents strenuous combat and helps treat wounded miners at Thorium Point 27 30.
  • Uses Druid healing and a Seed of Life to close Garrosh’s wound. Blood loss leaves him weak, and internal recovery takes longer than surface healing 43.

Cyclone

Masley can summon a growing cyclone by calling upon wind elemental spirits, but his normal mana reserves cannot sustain the spell 19.

  • Uses the Moonshadow Staff to supplement his mana while clearing a mountain passage guarded by twelve Orcs 19.
  • Scatters the guards and lifts one into the air, allowing Diago and Khanifa to slip past 19.
  • Finds summoning wind spirits easier in the Badlands, their domain 19.
  • Nearly exhausts himself maintaining the spell; the staff supplies a final three seconds before he escapes in panther form 19.

Soothing and Spiritual Guidance

  • Casts Soothing, normally used on enraged beasts, to interrupt Diago’s growing bloodlust. It also works on humans, though less noticeably 32.
  • Explains Elune’s faith and teaches Diago a prayer after the hunter thanks him for pulling him back from corruption 32.
  • Reports receiving a vision from Elune directing him to rescue Marshal Reginald Windsor 34.

Heightened Perception and Wilderness Skills

  • Darkvision: Can activate it, though abrupt contrasts between bright light and darkness make its use uncomfortable 35.
  • Magical sight: Allows him to see Franclorn Forgewright’s otherwise unseen ghost 36.
  • Panther senses: Gains a keen sense of smell, which becomes a liability in a filthy latrine 40.
  • Nature sensitivity: Feels the damage inflicted on Searing Gorge almost as if its wounds were his own 23.
  • Wilderness survival: His Druid skills help make travel through the harsh Badlands manageable alongside Diago 13.

Equipment / Items

  • Moonshadow Staff — An oak staff nearly as tall as a man, with a triangular head. His teacher claimed it was made from a branch taken from Nordrassil’s shaded side. Its natural energy supplements his mana 19.
  • Magical storage bag — Finds two leather bags in an Orc camp and gives one to Diago; their supplies are subsequently packed inside them 16.
  • Rare herbs — Claims a chest of valuable herbs while looting the Black Vault with Diago 47.
  • Metal restriction — Druid doctrine forbids wearing metal objects. Masley cites this restriction when wishing he could have a handgun like Diago’s M500 43.

Relationships

  • Diago Asnar — Fellow prisoner, traveling partner, and trusted friend. Their bear-and-archer teamwork begins at Ragefang Camp, and each repeatedly saves the other. Masley also challenges Diago to trust his companions rather than handle everything himself 8 12 32 39 43.
  • Khanifa — Diago’s animal companion and Masley’s fellow stealth operative. Khanifa remains fascinated by his panther transformations; Masley urges Diago to have confidence in the animal’s abilities 37 39.
  • Unnamed Druid teacher — Trained Masley, taught him about humans’ attempts to learn Druid magic, and rewarded his qualification with the Moonshadow Staff 9 19.
  • Elune — His goddess and moral authority. Her teachings motivate his opposition to slavery, and her reported vision initiates the Windsor rescue mission 24 34.
  • Thorium Brotherhood — Allies who shelter the escaped slaves and recognize Masley and Diago’s service with a farewell celebration 28 35.
  • Tharnok Frosthammer — Fellow participant in the slave escape. Tharnok promises that the Frosthammer Family will repay Masley and Diago for their help 26 28.
