"Potter, I permit you to become my friend."

"Why are you always hanging around those idiots? Let me help you find your true friends."

At the compartment door, a fair hand reached out toward Harry.

Harry looked up.

The hand belonged to a pretty girl with long platinum hair.

She wore tailored black wizarding robes, with an exquisite silver ornament pinned at her collar.

The afternoon sunlight slanted through the train window onto her shoulders, casting a soft, luminous sheen over her beautifully groomed long hair.

Her gray-green eyes swept across the compartment, lingered briefly on Ron, then finally settled on Harry's face.

Her chin was slightly raised, her hand extended with perfect ease, and a faint, reserved smile had already graced her lips.

As though she were accustomed to people immediately taking her hand whenever she chose to offer it.

Two other girls stood behind her.

The one on the left was tall, with a neat ponytail, and was watching Ron expressionlessly.

The one on the right had short hair. She glanced down the corridor before entering, then took her place just behind the girl's side.

One on either side, they completely blocked the already cramped compartment doorway.

Ron's face instantly flushed red.

"Who are you calling an idiot?"

The girl didn't even look at him.

She kept her hand extended toward Harry, a faint, reserved smile on her lips.

"Draco Malfoy."

"You must have heard of my surname."

Harry blinked. His gaze lingered on her face for a few seconds before slowly shifting to the two girls behind her.

Platinum hair, gray eyes, the surname Malfoy, and two lackeys standing in very familiar positions.

Almost all those features matched.

So why was the most crucial detail the one that didn't?

"You're... Malfoy?"

The girl frowned slightly, seemingly unable to understand why he needed to repeat it.

"I just introduced myself."

Harry didn't answer.

He really did need a little time right now.

After transmigrating into Harry Potter, he had already accepted owls that delivered letters, walls he could walk through, and the fact that he would very likely have to fight a noseless fellow for his life someday.

Just a few minutes ago, he had been listening to Ron introduce the wizarding world while thinking over his plans for school.

Learn magic properly, master his spells, and try to spare himself and his friends some suffering.

Since he knew so much in advance, he ought to find some way to make life a little better.

But the scene before him really hadn't been part of his plans.

In the story he knew, Malfoy was supposed to be a boy with slicked-back hair who went around making trouble with two lackeys.

Now that boy was gone.

In his place was a pretty young lady with long platinum hair and exquisite clothes, who made even an invitation to friendship seem like the presentation of a medal of honor.

And even the two lackeys behind her had changed along with her.

Harry glanced at the two girls again, then looked back at the girl before him, with only one thought left in his head.

Malfoy.

How did you really get so lucky?!!

"Potter?"

The girl's voice interrupted his thoughts.

Her outstretched hand had been hanging there for quite some time.

Harry looked up at her, still unable to reconcile the face before him with the Malfoy in his memory.

Ron looked at him, then at the girl, and suddenly couldn't hold back a laugh.

It was quiet, but everyone in the compartment heard it.

The faint smile vanished from the girl's lips, and she couldn't help pressing them tightly together.

She glanced at Ron, then back at Harry.

So that was it. This redheaded fellow was waiting to make a laughingstock of her, and Harry Potter was playing along.

They were sitting there together, watching her offer her hand, then deliberately leaving her hanging.

Her fingers slowly curled inward.

"It seems you've already made your choice."

Harry finally snapped out of it.

"What choice?"

To her ears, those words were even more infuriating than an outright refusal!

He was actually pretending not to know.

The girl withdrew her hand and placed it behind her back, her fingertips tightly gripping her robe sleeve.

"I came to invite you personally, yet you can't even show the most basic courtesy."

"Wait, Malfoy, I-"

"Shut up! I'll remember you!"

She cut him off, clearly no longer willing to hear any explanation.

Her gray-green eyes glared at Harry, her fair cheeks flushed with anger, and even her voice had grown tauter than before.

"Don't think the whole world revolves around you just because you're Harry Potter!"

Harry opened his mouth, feeling that she would probably do better to use that line as a reminder to herself.

But before he could say anything, the girl had already turned around.

"Crabbe, Goyle, we're leaving."

The two girls immediately stepped aside.

Hearing those two surnames, Harry faltered again over the explanation he had just pieced together.

It really was them.

The girl reached the doorway, only to stop again.

Her long golden hair slipped from her shoulder as she turned back. She stared at Harry as though trying to firmly commit his appearance to memory.

"You'll pay for your rudeness today, Harry Potter!"

Slam!

The compartment door slammed shut so hard that even the glass shuddered.

Beside him, Ron finally burst out laughing. Most of his irritation at being insulted seemed to have dissipated with the slam of the door.

"Did you see her face just now?"

"I bet no one's ever turned her down like that before!"

Harry turned to him and asked a question Ron hadn't expected at all.

"Ron, you knew she was a girl? That Draco Malfoy?"

Ron's laughter paused, and his expression shifted from delight to bewilderment.

"...What else would she be?"

Harry fell silent.

Baffled by the way Harry was looking at him, Ron glanced down at the box in his hands, then back up at him.

"The Malfoy family's only daughter. Didn't you hear her introduce herself?"

He had.

That was precisely the problem.

Harry rubbed his forehead and leaned against the seat back. Even the fields sweeping past outside the window couldn't help him untangle his thoughts.

Malfoy had become a young lady, Crabbe and Goyle had become female bodyguards, and Ron actually considered all of this perfectly normal.

Great.

He needed to rethink just how much of what he knew could still be taken as fact.

Better still, he'd just managed to thoroughly offend this young lady in less than a minute...

In the train corridor, Malfoy walked quickly, the hem of her robes swaying gently with her steps.

A student approached carrying snacks. Goyle stepped half a pace aside in advance, blocking a paper bag that nearly bumped into him.

Malfoy didn't stop. Only when passing another compartment with its door open did he slow slightly and raise his chin again.

He wasn't angry at all!

Following behind him, Goyle hesitated before finally speaking.

"Miss, just now, he seemed to be merely..."

"Arrogant."

Malfoy coldly finished for him.

Goyle swallowed the words "slow to react."

Crabbe had no such reservations and asked outright, "Should we tell the master?"

Draco stopped abruptly.

Tell Dad?

Tell Dad that she'd taken the initiative to seek out Harry Potter and make friends, only to be left hanging in the compartment and finally have to bring her people back?

Just imagining her father asking what had happened made the heat she had only just suppressed surge into her face again.

Especially since her father would definitely ask what Potter had actually said.

How was she supposed to answer?

That she'd waited and waited, but he hadn't offered his hand?

"I can handle this little matter myself."

Malfoy turned his head, his tone utterly solemn.

"No one is to tell Dad."

Crabbe nodded, and Goyle had the good sense not to continue explaining.

He lowered his head and straightened the sleeve he had crumpled in his grip. Only after smoothing out the crease did he start forward again.

"Once we get to Hogwarts, he'll know what he's missed."

Of course he wouldn't go looking for him again.

The Malfoy family's friendship wasn't something just anyone could have.

Once he saw what he could do and realized how foolish he'd been today, he would naturally regret it.

"I want him to come to me himself." After saying this, Malfoy thought for a moment and added, "When that happens, I won't be so accommodating."

Whatever scene he imagined, the corners of his tightly pressed lips suddenly lifted, and a little more smugness appeared in his gray-green eyes.

"Of course, if our Chosen One is willing to kneel and apologize to me, I might change my mind."

He raised his chin slightly, then added with reserve:

"Of course, only might."
