Background / History
Yan Qi came from Wei Province and moved east for school during middle school. Before the apocalypse, he worked as a programmer in a major eastern city 26.
While escaping with survivors, he met Yang Fan and Ye Xuanyin when their groups put out to sea. The three joined forces and established the Hope Fleet. Yan Qi and Ye Xuanyin supported Yang Fan as fleet captain because of his abilities and foresight, while retaining command of their own ships 26.
Qin Mao and Su Miaomiao initially traveled aboard Yan Qi’s Yaximu. During a Rotgill Corpse attack, Yan Qi controlled five skeletons that eventually destroyed three attackers through superior numbers, though the fight was prolonged 7 24.
Appearance
- Face: High, straight nose, thick eyebrows, deep, melancholy eyes, and lips described as neither too thin nor too full 25.
- Overall impression: Strikingly handsome, with a mixed-race appearance; Qin Mao considers him better-looking than most male celebrities 25 26.
- Clothing and accessories: Carries miniature skeletons in a hoodie pocket and a pouch at his waist 30 36.
Personality
Yan Qi is sociable and playful, habitually addressing others as “my friend,” “buddy,” or “adash.” His distinctive “Nang Language” began as a joke to make a girl he liked laugh and became an ingrained habit. When discussing serious matters such as survivors’ property rights, he switches to standard Mandarin 26 29.
His friendliness does not exclude practical self-interest. He supports Qin Mao’s return partly because the Yaximu desperately needs repairs, and he approves of Yang Fan’s suggestion that Qin Mao could be kept prisoner as a shipwright if necessary. Nevertheless, when Qin Mao initially selects broken objects as payment, Yan Qi insists that he choose again rather than accept an unfair deal 24 30.
Yan Qi is easily embarrassed over bargaining and reluctant to appear greedy among companions. After the Chang-Driving Pufferfish battle, he offers to surrender his loot share, arguing that Ye Xuanyin’s rescue of Yang Fan matters more than wondrous materials. He later admits that his sole attempt at haggling ended when a seller claimed the goods were already priced at cost 47.
Abilities & Skills
Bone Conversion and Skeleton Control
As a Bone Controller, Yan Qi turns creatures’ bones into skeletons that act under his command 36.
- Combat: Uses multiple skeletons to surround enemies, strike with claws, and bite 7 40.
- Scouting: Explicitly identifies reconnaissance as one of their uses 36.
- Manual labor: Commands a human-sized skeleton to carry a heavy crate of supplies 30.
- Storage and deployment: Keeps skeletons in miniature form, enlarges them for use, and can collect them afterward 30 36.
- Scaling: Can convert more skeletons as his strength increases 36.
Skeleton Reassembly
Yan Qi can gather scattered bones back into a functioning skeleton. Against the Bloodfang Warthog, he uses the command “Coalesce!” while his Yinling Orb flashes, rebuilding a skeleton after it is crushed 40.
- Reassembled skeletons can immediately resume fighting, although the demonstrated reconstruction is more battered than before 40.
- Recovery is not guaranteed: he retrieves only two skeleton soldiers after the island retreat, leaving three behind permanently 40.
Fish-Bone Skeleton
Yan Qi assembles miniature fishbone fragments into a ranged attacker that launches its ribs as arrows 45 46.
- The skeleton draws a rib backward and releases it through its mouth, firing a powerful projectile 45 46.
- Its movements are slow and its attack requires a lengthy wind-up 46.
- Ammunition depends on its remaining ribs; Yan Qi counts five shots left during the pufferfish battle 45.
- Initially unfamiliar with the technique, he misses before successfully wounding the Chang-Driving Pufferfish 45 46.
- Its arrows cannot penetrate the pufferfish’s inflated defenses, and its earlier hits prove superficial 46.
Limitations and Sequence Price
- Armored opponents: His skeletons cannot meaningfully damage the Bloodfang Warthog’s thick hide, even when targeting its eyelids 40.
- Mental interference: Fu Qingshi’s influence prevents him from considering the use of his bone-control ability to test suspected corpse impostors 44.
- Swimming: Yan Qi never learned to swim and cannot enter the sea to rescue Yang Fan 45.
- Reported Sequence price: Qin Mao recalls Wang Tai saying that Undead Bone Masters must share a pillow with a skeleton while sleeping; Yan Qi does not personally confirm this requirement 36.
Equipment / Items
- Yinling Orb: A crystal ball that reacts strongly to Qin Mao. Yan Qi interprets the reaction as evidence that Qin Mao has dozens of lives on his hands. The orb also flashes when he reassembles a shattered skeleton 24 40.
- Miniature skeletons and bone fragments: Portable servants and materials carried in his pockets or waist pouch, deployed for labor and combat 30 36 45.
- Yaximu: His approximately thirty-meter ship, built from wood and metal with protective metal cladding underneath. An Eight-Eyed Ice Weird Spider’s bite leaves it dangerously damaged before Qin Mao repairs it 26 27 29.
Relationships
- Yang Fan — Fleet captain and fellow founder. Yan Qi accepts his leadership and follows his targeting instructions during battles against the Bloodfang Warthog and Chang-Driving Pufferfish 26 40 45.
- Ye Xuanyin — Fellow founder and captain of the Rose. They joke together, assess Qin Mao’s trustworthiness, and cooperate in the fleet’s defense 24 26 45 47.
- Qin Mao — Former passenger turned fellow Transcendent and shipwright. Yan Qi welcomes him back, negotiates payment for repairing the Yaximu, and fights alongside him against the pufferfish 24 29 30 45 46.
- Xu Ran — The Yaximu’s shipwright, whom he respectfully calls “Engineer Xu.” He seeks Qin Mao’s help after her repairs fail to stop the flooding 26 27.
- Zhao Yuechuan — The Rose’s shipwright, initially regarded by Yan Qi as the fleet’s best. Yan Qi acknowledges his experience while introducing Qin Mao as another shipwright 27.
- Su Miaomiao — A passenger aboard his ship. Before her confrontation with Qin Mao, Yan Qi has a favorable impression of her popularity and social skills 27.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Qin Mao’s Return and the *Yaximu* Repairs
- Recognizes Qin Mao during a nighttime encounter and invites him to rejoin the fleet. Privately, his Yinling Orb’s reaction raises concerns about Qin Mao’s recent activities 24.
- Brings Qin Mao to inspect the Yaximu after conventional repairs fail 26 27.
- Helps evacuate the survivors after Yang Fan mistakenly suspects that Qin Mao intends to blow up the ship 28.
- Returns to find the hull restored, then arranges Qin Mao’s payment from the survivors’ registered stores. Their bargaining leaves him frustrated enough to complain to Yang Fan and Ye Xuanyin 29 30.
Bloodfang Warthog Retreat
- Holds off the Bloodfang Warthog with skeletons while survivors board the fleet’s ships 40.
- Prevents the creature from reaching the departing Yaximu by throwing a skeleton’s rib into its path, shortening its leap and sending it into the sea 40.
- Escapes with only two skeleton soldiers recovered 40.
Chang-Driving Pufferfish Crisis
- Helps investigate the apparent drownings and reports that Xuanxuan was seen leaving with his older brother before falling overboard 41.
- After the mental interference breaks, realizes his bone-control ability might have exposed the corpse infiltrators 44.
- Wounds the attacking pufferfish with his Fish-Bone Skeleton while Ye Xuanyin rescues Yang Fan. Qin Mao subsequently kills it with Just Verdict 45 46.
- Participates in the resulting loot discussion, initially offering to forgo his share before the group establishes contribution-based distribution rules 47.
Dwindling Supplies and the Apocalypse’s Timeline
- Reports that the chance of catching normal fish has fallen to roughly one percent or less over the preceding four or five days 49.
- Joins the discussion of corpses predating the apocalypse’s apparent arrival and learns about differing time flows deeper at sea 50.
- Responds bitterly to Qin Mao’s proposal to remain in safer waters, indicating that the fleet cannot simply stay where it is; Yang Fan then presents Qin Mao with an ominous note 50.
