So this was how the ancient scroll worked.
Absorb the aura of a malevolent ghost.
Then develop the brain?
This was the first possibility Lu Feng thought of.
At the same time, his mind began to storm, working on three things at once.
On one hand, he was considering the ancient scroll's function.
On another, he was reviewing his old lessons.
And on yet another, his brain began to consider everything he had seen and heard today.
Lu Feng realized that he had guessed wrong.
The ancient scroll did more than just provide hints.
It was very possible that he had simply never discovered the Ancient Scroll's marvelous uses before.
The ancient scroll only reacted when he encountered a malevolent ghost or killed one.
Previously, he had often studied in the monastery and had never seen a malevolent ghost.
Even when he went out to "work," he had never encountered a Malevolent Ghost—if he had, he might have died long ago.
So his first encounter with a malevolent ghost was also the first time the ancient scroll had shown its power.
Moreover, Lu Feng's mind was now working at tremendous speed. He soon understood the causes and consequences, and everything that had happened over the past few days flashed before his eyes like a film.
He suddenly realized something.
Regardless of what he had come here to do, or why things had turned out this way.
He had nevertheless gained a once-in-a-thousand-years opportunity for wealth vast enough to flood the heavens.
He was like a little ant that had accidentally stumbled into a treasure vault and obtained the wealth to ascend to heaven. As long as he maneuvered appropriately here, he would surely obtain treasures beyond his imagination!
First, he now had a source for the money he needed to give alms. The two thousand taels of silver for this offering had been accounted for.
In the Secret Dharma Region, there was a saying.
The chieftains were white.
The monks were yellow.
This meant that monks needed large quantities of gold objects. Whether it was gold dust for Buddhist statues, sacrificial offerings, or the manufacture of other ritual implements, all of it required gold.
Thus, within the monasteries.
There was a great deal of gold.
But the chieftains loved only silver.
The chieftains had their own silver vaults.
Large quantities of silver were stored in those vaults for deposits, withdrawals, and use.
Gaqila Tusi's household had suffered a ghostly calamity.
His money had surely become an "inheritance."
Something everyone would fight over.
Lu Feng could not carry away all the money alone, nor was it his to take.
Taking it meant death.
But taking enough money to give alms, and using it for that purpose, would absolutely be fine.
Because, second, he remembered perfectly clearly that not long ago, when Master Zhuogedunzhu had granted him permission to use the secret mantra, he had explicitly said that if Lu Feng survived this time, he could invoke his Lineage's name.
What a great monk like this said while casting spells counted.
Lu Feng was not surprised in the slightest that Master Zhuogedunzhu had a powerful Lineage behind him.
What was there to be surprised about?
Most chieftains were relatives. Your daughter married my son, and my son was your son-in-law.
There were also many noble Lineages whose members were relatives of monks in the monasteries. Every great noble household had large numbers of Lineage members in monasteries, serving either as steward monks or treasury monks. Like a tightly woven net, they connected monastery and Lineage, each holding high rank and great power.
Zhuogedunzhu had completed his studies at one of the four highest monasteries.
Having an illustrious Lineage behind him was perfectly normal.
That also meant that, if he survived this time, he could invoke Master Zhuogedunzhu's Lineage's name and gain a backer.
With a backer, taking two thousand taels of silver would not count as a fatal offense.
No, he needed to take a little more to use as gifts.
At least three thousand taels.
That was the third point.
He remembered very clearly that people coveted Gaqila Tusi's pastures and estates.
In Achubu Prefecture, Gaqila was not the only chieftain household.
There were quite a few chieftains and Dzongben nobles.
So when he next went to the monastery to report the news, whom he reported to and whom he allowed to learn of this first were all matters requiring finesse.
As long as he thought things through properly and acted reasonably, he could reap tremendous benefits from this.
At this thought, another urgent matter occurred to Lu Feng.
When would this effect of "quick-wittedness" end?
If this "quick-wittedness" could remain in effect until his scripture debate examination.
Wouldn't that be wonderfully convenient!
Then he would sweep all before him, finish the examination, and obtain his degree. Wouldn't it be as easy as plucking something right into his hand?
He took out the ancient scroll.
On the ancient scroll, beneath that huge tiger-shaped old woman, he saw a corpse, with a duration beside it.
Two hours and seven and a half minutes.
It could last that long?
Lu Feng was greatly heartened, though also a little disappointed.
It seemed it would not last until the scripture debate.
He tucked the Human-Skin Sutra Scroll against his body, but did not go looking for more trouble with these lesser ghosts.
He knew that all of today's wonderful possibilities depended on Master Zhuogedunzhu remaining alive. He prepared what the Lama had instructed him to bring and ran over. Before he even arrived, that intense, indescribable smell nearly made him vomit and faint!
"Chant the mantra!"
From afar, Lu Feng heard Master Zhuogedunzhu's voice.
With no other choice.
"Om, sattva, samyuti."
It was still like "someone up ahead had struck a mighty hammer blow." The surrounding stench dispersed, but Lu Feng, whose "ears and eyes were keen," suddenly felt a surge of immense Great Terror. His spiritual intuition told him not to raise his head to look at the magical battle ahead, but simply to keep his head down and bring the offerings over.
A mighty power blessed Lu Feng, warming his entire body from his navel.
It allowed Lu Feng to keep approaching.
Then he heard true "ghosts weeping and wolves howling."
He dared not lift his head, so he did not see how fierce the battle before him was. Behind Master Zhuogedunzhu, indistinct shadows now seemed to form a wrathful deity. As he recited the secret mantra, the corpses on the ground made cracking sounds. He took out a small knife, sliced open a skin on the ground along its spine, and used blood to draw a secret mantra on it.
Looking back at "Zhasa," who dared not raise his head, Zhuogedunzhu shouted, "Chant the mantra! Imagine a great sun between your brows, burning everything! Turn that great sun into a vajra! Burn!"
"Zhasa" did as instructed.
With that alone, the corpses on the ground and the offerings "Zhasa" had brought burst into flame together, becoming oily green fire as viscous as fierce-burning oil.
Master Zhuogedunzhu guided these flames, giving them true form over his body and outlining a venerable being with one face and two arms. It held a spear in one hand and the Demon-Binding Lasso in the other. It flung the lasso far out, bound the "malevolent ghost" trapped inside the upper chamber, and hauled it fiercely outward!
That malevolent ghost was extraordinarily terrifying. It could even chant mantras!
With a tiger's roar, a striped tiger charged out and slammed into Guru Zhuoge Dunzhu. Guru Zhuoge Dunzhu immediately cried, "Don't!"
But it was already too late.
The spear in the hand of that one-faced, two-armed venerable being blasted down fiercely, piercing the malevolent ghost.
At the same time.
Not far away, Lu Feng saw a stream of blackish-gray aura, visibly much thicker and stronger than that of the lesser ghost before, drift over from nearby and settle onto his Human-Skin Sutra Scroll!
In an instant, Lu Feng's brain suddenly underwent a "massive expansion"!
I've struck it rich.
That was Lu Feng's very first thought.
He really had struck it rich!
Storehouse of Infinite Wisdom.
Storehouse of the Vajra That Cuts Through.
