Power Progression
Mingli’s advancement is described retrospectively; his exact cultivation stage is not named 14 34.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| King Mingzhu empowerment and offerings | 14 | Offered his body, fear, and terror to King Mingzhu, obtaining empowerment and the deity’s secrets without losing his fundamental mind and becoming an Outer God. |
| Further King Mingzhu cultivation — exact stage unspecified | 34 | Progressed beyond the point where other practitioners stopped after their first empowerment and offering. His cultivation has since stalled because he has not found “a way back,” rather than because he fears advancing. |
Background and Authority
Mingli was born a slave servant but rose to become a powerful monastic official. By the time he accepts Yongzhen as his disciple, he owns six estates and several thousand slaves in Achubu Prefecture. His position also entitles him to an official residence with servant monks and clerks supported by the temple 34.
Within the Discipline Hall, Mingli serves as Elder Mingzhi’s deputy. Because Mingzhi rarely concerns himself with administrative affairs, Mingli manages matters both large and small. His judicial authority extends beyond the monastery into its affiliated institutions 34.
Mingli is one of the Abbot Venerable’s most important supporters in the Discipline Hall and belongs to neither the Tusi nor the Dzongben monastic factions. Even senior red-robed monks move aside when they hear his iron staff approaching 14 18 32.
Zajuben Temple reportedly offered him a guardian Lama position. He declined, declaring that he had offered his body to King Mingzhu and would never leave 14.
Appearance
- Build and complexion: Tall, heavily muscled, and black-faced 14 18.
- Clothing: Dark crimson monastic robes that leave his right shoulder bare 14.
- Eyes: Needle-point pupils surrounded by broad whites 14 32.
- Head covering: Shifting light and shadow above his head resemble a black hat decorated with red streamers 14.
- Skull rosary: Wears six human skulls around his neck, associated with his six former disciples 34.
- Iron staff: Carries a heavy, mantra-blessed staff whose repeated strikes announce his approach 14 32.
Personality
Mingli is imperious and openly intimidating. He often ignores formal greetings, deliberately sounds his staff to make others clear his path, and exercises disciplinary power without hesitation. He is equally blunt about the danger of becoming his disciple: after explaining how his previous six students died, he tells Yongzhen that he does not mind adding another skull to his rosary 18 32 34.
His mentorship nevertheless includes practical instruction, material support, and personal protection. He explains monastic privileges in detail, arranges a paid post for Yongzhen, investigates the threat attached to him, and rescues him during the storm. He allows his disciple’s charitable work but insists that compassion must be backed by the strength to survive 34 38 44 47.
Abilities & Skills
King Mingzhu Dharma Protector Mantra
Mingli is an unusually accomplished practitioner of the temple’s dangerous protector lineage 14 34.
- Offers himself through Mind Offerings, progressively surrendering fear, wrath, love and hatred, gain and loss, and deeper aspects of consciousness 34.
- Can invoke King Mingzhu’s wrathful presence, producing overwhelming terror and great hands bearing bells 37 38.
- Visualizes King Mingzhu to suppress the Yaksha King within his abdomen 49.
- Limit: His wrathful manifestation can turn against bystanders after its original target disappears. Mingzhi must calm it with mantras, offerings, and ritual performances 38.
- Collateral danger: At Wula Station, the attending Lamas contain his Great Terror Resonance because its escape would transform the attendant monks outside into Malevolent Ghosts; Lu Feng alone is identified as an exception 50.
Great Terror and Ghost Subjugation
Mingli can terrify other practitioners without visibly releasing his power 14.
- His natural Great Terror rhythm leaves Zhiguang unable to think of anything except kneeling in worship 14.
- Subdues the six disciples who become Malevolent Ghosts during their first empowerment and makes them his Dharma Protectors 34.
- Rides a subdued Malevolent Ghost whose resonance overwhelms Lu Feng’s fiery vitality during their escape from the storm 39 47.
Secret Mantras and Seals
Mingli uses secret techniques for restraint, revelation, and protection 33 37 39.
- Speech prohibition: Sends Ghost Resonance into Yongli’s throat, forming a hidden mantra beneath his tongue. The prohibition is to lift when Yongli reaches Bayang Village and meets its monk 33.
- Six-Syllable Manjushri Sword Seal: Attempts to reveal the invisible Thangka presented by Lu Feng 37.
- Golden Great Sun: Forms the Vajra Fist and chants “Om! Ram!” to dispel darkness and reveal the concealed landmark leading to Sunrise Temple 39.
- Protective curses: Uses blood, incense, a Vajra Bell, and mantras to secure scriptures and ritual objects against unauthorized handling 49.
Empowerment and Instruction
As Yongzhen’s registered Yidam Lama, Mingli prepares him for the King Mingzhu lineage and demands the obedience associated with that relationship 33 34.
- Prescribes fasting, bathing, and meditation before the first blessing empowerment 34.
- Requires dietary restrictions, avoidance of women, obedience to the Lama, and an unwavering state of mind between the first and third empowerments 34.
- Promises to teach the Immaculate Body Yoga Great Mudra while Yongzhen cannot practice the King Mingzhu Dharma Protector Mantra 39.
- Begins a safflower-water purification ritual at Sunrise Temple 40.
- Attribution caveat: The subsequent figure appearing as “Elder Mingli” is revealed to be connected to the Abbot Dharma Venerable’s hidden transmission. Lu Feng identifies that Venerable—not Mingli—as the true transmitter of the Great Mudra empowerment 42 43.
Travel and Crisis Leadership
Mingli is experienced in the hazards of the Secret Dharma Region 44 46 47.
- Recognizes dangerous celestial phenomena and orders supplies abandoned when speed becomes essential 46 47.
- Uses grease-coated ritual torches whose flames survive heavy rain and reveal the beings within it 47.
- Directs scouts and rear guards, warns Yongzhen against trusting apparent returning travelers, and prioritizes escape when a dragon-type Wild God approaches 46 47.
Equipment and Holdings
- Mantra-blessed iron staff — Weighs well over ten jin; serves as both a ritual implement and an audible declaration of authority 14 32.
- Six-skull prayer beads — Linked to his six failed disciples, whom he subdued as Dharma Protectors 34.
- Malevolent Ghost mount — Carries Mingli on the northwest journey and enables his escape with Lu Feng 39 47.
- Wicker chest of scriptures and ritual objects — Contains scrolls, prayer wheels, ritual robes, a Vajra Bell, and protected printing blocks from Zajuben Temple’s Printing Scripture Institute. He renews its protections daily 49.
- Treasure vase — Used to pour safflower-infused water over Lu Feng during purification 40.
- Estates and household — Owns six estates and several thousand slaves in Achubu Prefecture, in addition to his temple-supported official residence 34.
Relationships
- Lu Feng / Yongzhen — Seventh disciple and intended successor. Mingli wants him to inherit his Dharma lineage and shelter his descendants; Yongzhen may also inherit part of his authority and established influence 33 34.
- Elder Mingzhi — Senior fellow disciple and superior in the Discipline Hall. Mingzhi trusts him to question Yongzhen and personally intervenes to calm his wrathful transformation 34 37 38.
- Abbot Venerable — Political superior whose authority Mingli supports within the Discipline Hall 14.
- King Mingzhu — Protector deity to whom Mingli offers his body and mind. The relationship grants great power but carries the danger of losing control 14 34 38.
- Six former disciples — All failed their first empowerment and became Malevolent Ghosts. Mingli subdued them as his Dharma Protectors 34.
- Elder Mingfa — Rival whose attempt to reach Lu Feng through Zhiguang is blocked by Mingli. Mingfa later dismisses him as an obstacle he expects to outlast 14 15 38.
- Master Zhiyun — Junior monk who addresses Mingli as Uncle-Master and defers to his authority, including his decision to register himself as Yongzhen’s Yidam Lama 18 33.
- Zhiguang — Monk whose Dharma protector Mingli subdues before sentencing him to ten lashes and a one-nine livestock penalty 14 15.
Story Role
Intervention and Examination
Mingli first appears after Lu Feng’s mantra practice develops a compassionate radiance. He subdues a Malevolent Ghost, stops Zhiguang, and imposes disciplinary punishment, frustrating Elder Mingfa’s effort to have Lu Feng brought to him 14 15.
He later escorts Lu Feng toward the Debate Hall. His presence clears the route, while Zhiyun leads Lu Feng into the rear courtyard for the final stage of the Kalyāṇamitra examination 18.
Taking Yongzhen as a Disciple
After learning that Yongzhen intends to worship King Mingzhu, Mingli takes him to register and has himself entered as the young monk’s Yidam Lama. He banishes the registration official Yongli to Bayang Village and offers the vacated clerk’s post to Yongzhen 32 33.
Mingli then explains the privileges and obligations of discipleship, gives Yongzhen an ivory token confirming his appointment, and reveals the fate of his six previous students 34.
The Invisible Thangka
When Yongqing becomes a dangerous Malevolent Ghost, Mingli takes charge of questioning Yongzhen, preventing Mingfa’s faction from using the incident against him. He believes his disciple’s account of an invisible Thangka but cannot safely expose its nature 37.
His attempt provokes King Mingzhu’s wrathful manifestation. After Mingzhi restores him to normal, Mingli arranges a northwest journey to consult the Ganing Lineage about the ancient matters connected to Yongzhen’s predicament 38.
Sunrise Temple and the Northwest Journey
At Sunrise Temple, Mingli begins Yongzhen’s purification and empowerment. A figure merges with his shadow, and the ritual develops into a hidden transmission that Lu Feng ultimately attributes to the Abbot Dharma Venerable 40 41 42.
During the onward journey, Mingli guides the party through supernatural rain, then abandons the convoy to carry Yongzhen away from an approaching Wild God. At Wula Station, he refuses to blame his disciple for the lost scripture and treasure, assigns him recovery duties, and resumes the daily rites protecting his own scriptures 46 47 48 49.
