Teacher Bai hurried off to make arrangements. "That works too. The children can get used to life here after our move as soon as possible."
She busied herself getting people to sort out which children would go and which would stay, while also leaving two people behind to care for the children with physical disabilities who could not use the toilet or eat on their own.
Jin Xia watched the teachers bustling about. Just watching them left her feeling physically and mentally exhausted.
Yet they were like tireless robots, devoting themselves wholeheartedly to the children's welfare and education, day after day.
The vans she had booked in advance arrived outside the welfare home on time.
The children lined up neatly and boarded the vehicles one after another.
Sitting in the van, Jin Xia looked through the amusement park's information and called the person in charge first. "Hello, is this Happy Fight Amusement Park? I couldn't find your opening hours. I wanted to ask, can we come and play now?"
"Yes, just come straight over."
The person in charge answered briskly.
Jin Xia had been thinking that if they could not, they would head to an amusement park in the city instead.
She, Teacher Bai, and Teacher He brought more than thirty little kids to the amusement park entrance.
Beneath the blazing sun, in the sweltering heat, every child wore a radiant smile. Not one complained of being tired or having a hard time.
Teacher Bai stepped forward and tapped on the security booth's glass window with a smile. "Hello, we're from Tongxin Welfare Home. We've brought the children here to play."
The older man reclining in a lounge chair in the air-conditioning raised his eyebrows and glanced at Teacher Bai, then slowly stood up. He grunted. "You've brought so many children here. Our amusement park is a business, you know. We can't waive admission for all these kids! Go beg somewhere else!"
Jin Xia had been discussing riding the carousel with Mengmeng and the others once they got inside.
Hearing the security guard's words, she furrowed her slender brows and stepped forward. "What do you mean by that?"
"You know perfectly well what I mean. This is an amusement park, not a charity home. If you want to do charity, pay out of your own pockets. We have a business to run and a living to make. If we let you in for free... everyone who comes here afterward will claim to be an orphan. Are we supposed to close down? Let everyone come in and play for free?"
Leaning on the window ledge, the older man roared harshly.
His face flushed crimson as he screamed hysterically, spittle flying everywhere!
Teacher Bai was furious. "We only came here to play. Who said we wanted to get in for free? We'll buy tickets!"
"Oh, now that's what you're saying. The moment you came over, the first thing out of your mouth was that you're from Tongxin Welfare Home. You think I don't know what you meant? You wanted to get in for free! If you ask me, these so-called charity homes of yours are just a gimmick to swindle government subsidies. Once you're done scamming the government, you come scam business owners like us!"
Reluctantly, the older man pulled a thick stack of tickets out of a drawer. He glanced at the little kids lined up outside. "Ninety-nine per child. Tell me how many of you there are first. Adult tickets are 199. Pay first, then I'll give you the tickets."
Jin Xia's first reaction upon hearing the admission price was that it was quite cheap.
After all, she had heard there were plenty of attractions inside. Like those large amusement parks, once you bought the initial admission ticket, all the other rides were free.
But Teacher Bai pointed at the security guard furiously. "Aren't you just scamming us? Since when does this place charge ninety-nine per person? I just looked it up online. This is your ticket price, isn't it?"
Fuming, she held up her phone and opened a video on Slowhand.
The video clearly introduced the amusement park's attractions, and at the end, the creator added, "Children's tickets are only 29.9 each!"
The older man did not even look Teacher Bai in the eye. He snorted and muttered contemptuously, "That video you showed me has our opening prices. Do you know how long ago that was?"
"Teacher Bai, we brought the little ones here to play and have fun today. I'll buy the tickets."
As Jin Xia spoke, she took out her phone to scan the payment code.
She had unconsciously overlooked the fact that, in 2015, mobile payments such as Zhifubao were not yet fully adopted at many tourist attractions.
Some established large supermarkets and shopping centers accepted payments by scanning a code, but for a "palm-sized" children's amusement park like this, it had yet to become widespread.
The older man stared at Jin Xia as though she were an idiot. "Why are you showing me your phone? Aren't you supposed to be paying?"
Jin Xia let out a long breath, struggling to suppress her anger. "I'll scan a code to pay you. Tell me your Zhifubao account."
"What Zhifubao? What mobile payment? If you want tickets, hand over the money! I really did hit the nail on the head. You're just here to play for free, aren't you?"
He pointed at Jin Xia and shouted imperiously, grabbing the baton beside him as he strode outside. "I don't care what charity you're from. We opened this amusement park to do business and make money. Want to play for free? Not a chance! A bunch of paupers doing charity, bringing a bunch of beggars to beg at an amusement park!"
With one hand on his hip, the older man swept a belligerent gaze around before spitting hard on the ground. "If I said I did charity and went to a bank, would the bank have to give me some spending money?"
Even Teacher He, standing nearby, could no longer bear to watch. "The Zhifubao we mentioned is just a payment method. If you don't have it and don't understand it, forget it. We won't argue with you! Xia, come on. We can have just as much fun somewhere else!"
Jin Xia was about to leave too, but a harsh shout suddenly came from behind her-
"You little beggars! Who said you could touch the statue at our entrance? If you break it, can you afford to pay for it? Already up to no good at your age, keeping your filthy hands on things!"
The older man rushed over to Mengmeng and the boys beside her and shoved them away hard.
Mengmeng and the others had grown up in the welfare home. Although the teachers could be a little stern when they misbehaved, none of them had ever faced anything like this.
"Waaah... boo-hoo-hoo!"
Mengmeng stood there, covered her face, and burst into loud sobs. "I want Mommy Director! I want to go home! I don't want to play anymore!"
While she cried that she wanted to go back, the children beside her clamored to stay and keep playing.
Everyone wanted something different, and the amusement park entrance soon descended into chaos.
Jin Xia had never expected that simply taking these little ones out to play would lead to so many complications.
"Get lost! All of you, get lost! Go cry somewhere else, you damn jinxes!"
