Jin Xia hesitated, then slowly asked, "Who is this?"
The person on the other end hurriedly explained, "Here's the situation. We're with the City Public Security Bureau Brigade. The person involved is currently unconscious, and we'd like to ask you a few questions."
"Questions about what?"
Jin Xia was completely confused, with no idea what had happened.
She never expected the officer to drop a bombshell right away. "Here's the situation. We received a report that Yan An slit his wrists in a suicide attempt because of you. Someone said you made some extreme remarks to Yan An at the time, so I'd like to ask you about it."
Yan An had slit his wrists in a suicide attempt?
Was he really the type?
At the thought of Yan An, the man's sleazy face surfaced in Jin Xia's mind, especially the way he had come to her carrying an obviously fake bag, his every word condescending, even mocking her by asking whether she had ever been to a Chanel counter.
Deep furrows formed between her brows as she parted her lips. "Yan An and I don't have each other's contact information. We've only met a few times, and those were all in public places on campus. So why can't you check the surveillance footage for whatever you want to know?"
"Then let's do this. Give us your ID number first, along with your phone number..."
The officer on the other end continued questioning her.
Jin Xia glanced at the caller ID. Although the number did show 110, it also had several unusual area codes in front of it. The number looked suspicious to her, not quite genuine.
"How about this? I'm not far from a police station right now. I'll report it at the nearest one."
After saying that, she gave An He a look, signaling for her to pull over nearby.
An He promptly drove toward the police station ahead.
The male voice on the phone continued, "No, there's no need. You only need to cooperate with our work. You don't need to get personally involved in anything else."
Before Jin Xia could say anything, the other person hung up without the slightest hesitation.
She knitted her brows slightly, utterly baffled. Why was this person so strange?
Logically, if the police were summoning her, they shouldn't have demanded her identification right off the bat. They should have had her report to the nearest police station first.
Unable to make sense of it, Jin Xia opened the car door and got out, then hurried into the police station.
Within just a few minutes, they had traced the call.
The number had no registered location. It was merely a virtual internet number disguised as the official 110 number.
Under these circumstances...
The officer looked at Jin Xia. "If you receive any similar calls in the future, contact us right away."
"All right. I only came here to get it on record anyway."
With that, she stood up and strode toward the door.
Suddenly, something else occurred to Jin Xia, and she turned to look at the officer. "Oh, there's one more thing I'd like to ask. Have there been any emergency calls from our Haida University recently?"
"Haida University?"
The officer brought Jin Xia back to the computer and sat down.
Looking this up wasn't so easy. They would need to register Jin Xia's information first, then apply for access to the internal system.
Jin Xia handed over her ID card. The officer beside her took it, glanced at it, and chuckled. "You're not even eighteen yet?"
"No..."
Jin Xia nodded.
The officer looked pleased. "Good for you. You young girls are very aware of scams these days. That's good. At least you can protect your personal information when you're out on your own."
"Exactly. Even if I can't find out who made that call right now, I can find out whether Yan An attempted suicide."
Jin Xia spoke casually, pulling out a chair and settling into it languidly.
Before long, the officer touched the screen and clicked a few times, but his search yielded nothing.
He frowned and paused. "From the looks of it, this is rather serious. Not only did this person impersonate the police to contact you privately, but they also impersonated the person involved. No one at your school has made any reports in the past five days."
This was no longer merely a scam; it also constituted a criminal offense.
After giving a brief statement, Jin Xia hurried out of the police station.
As she sat in the car, An He occasionally glanced at her worried face in the rearview mirror. "Xia, why do you look so serious? Did something happen?"
"I'm thinking about something. How exactly did Yan An and the others get my phone number?"
Jin Xia's expression grew even more serious, and she even opened her phone without thinking.
At present, she only had a handful of contacts.
"Could it have been one of your classmates?"
As An He spoke, she continued watching Jin Xia's expression.
If this person was Jin Xia's classmate, what was the point of giving him Jin Xia's phone number?
Jin Xia abruptly looked up!
She had it!
Who else could it have been but the sisters, Liu Rui and Liu Yan?
"I know now. An He, pick me up tomorrow evening. I'll stay at home."
Jin Xia's eyes lit up. Looking at the students in Haida University uniforms walking briskly toward her outside the car window, an intriguing smile gradually appeared on her face.
An He didn't know what Jin Xia planned to do, much less who that person was. She simply picked up the insulated container on the passenger seat beside her like a caring older sister next door.
She passed it to Jin Xia through the window. "Xia, take this and have some. I made soup for you at home. By my calculations, your period should be coming soon. Drinking more of this will be good for you."
"...All right."
Jin Xia stood there holding the insulated container. As she watched An He leave, she didn't know what to say for a moment.
After being reborn, although she had lost the world of fame and fortune from her previous life, she had also gained quite a few opportunities to experience the warmth of family affection.
Jin Xia strolled through campus. This time, no one pointed at her or whispered about her.
So she could be certain that Yan An hadn't spread word of this incident.
What was he planning to do with her ID number?
Elsewhere...
Yan An and the others sat on the beds in their dorm room, their faces filled with distress.
Sitting on the upper bunk, Chu Xiao curled his lips into a smug smile. "Yan An, I told you, didn't I? You'd never get her ID number. Let me put it plainly. The day before yesterday, I saw Jin Xia going in and out of a plastic surgery hospital with my own eyes. There was even a doctor in a white coat with her. If she wasn't there for plastic surgery, was she there to buy the hospital?"
Yan An clenched his fists indignantly, as though he had been betrayed. "Damn it. I never thought Jin Xia was that kind of woman. Why did she get plastic surgery?"
"Why else? Obviously, you just didn't see through her from the start. She's a plastic surgery girl. She's had work done all over!"
"If you ask me... Yan An, hurry up and get her ID number. Go to the hospital and check for yourself, and then you'll know, right? If she's a plastic surgery freak, how could she possibly deserve you, Yan An?"
