Minghui nodded and followed his parents around the crowd toward the east gate.
Beneath the east gate stood more than a dozen young men and women in fitted yellow uniforms, standing guard in neat formation. They were all around fourteen or fifteen, with green badges pinned to their chests. The yellow uniforms marked them as second- and third-year Outer Court students.
"Please stop!" Seeing the family of three approaching directly, dressed not in sect attire but merely in somewhat luxurious clothes, the leading male student immediately raised a hand to halt them. Those who came to enroll at Shrek Academy were either wealthy or noble; plenty wore expensive clothing.
Of course, precisely because he knew the applicants were people of status, there was no arrogance on his face. His voice was simply somewhat stiff.
"If you're here to enroll, please line up at the back."
He wore the air of someone handling routine business.
Ming Chen kept a smile on his face. With a flick of his hand, he took out his old Inner Court badge from his Soul Tool.
The male student's expression changed at once. He immediately straightened himself and bowed respectfully.
"Please come in, Senior!"
"Thank you for your hard work." Ming Chen nodded slightly and offered a smiling word of encouragement before leading his wife and son through the gate.
Once the three had gone some distance away, the students around the male student could no longer hold back their gossip.
"He's actually an Inner Court disciple from the older generation. I wonder which class he was from? His child is already this old, so he must be from at least two classes ago. He's probably at least a Soul Sage."
"But why does that senior look so young? Could he just be a family member?"
"I think so. He looks no older than eighteen to me. So that badge should belong to the senior sister beside him."
"She's really beautiful!"
"Damn, you're thirsty as hell. Get a hold of yourself!"
"..."
Meanwhile, Minghui followed his parents down the academy's main avenue. The vegetation around them was lush, and the scenery was exceptionally beautiful.
After walking another two hundred meters or so, their view ahead was blocked by ten orderly arranged white stone statues, each ten meters tall.
"The one in the middle is Flender, the founder of Shrek Academy and its first dean."
Qingyi began the introductions.
Having read the original Douluo I novel, Minghui had no particular feelings toward these people. His expression remained calm as he merely nodded in response.
"This is Yu Xiaogang, known as the Grandmaster. The one beside him is Liu Erlong, also the Grandmaster's wife..."
So the academy had deliberately concealed the other familial relationship between Liu Erlong and Yu Xiaogang. Minghui curled his lip.
And now they suddenly care about saving face?
"The seven behind them are the first generation of Shrek Seven Devils." Having passed the first three statues, Qingyi continued.
Minghui looked up, and his gaze soon settled on Tang San's statue. He remembered that face vividly.
A gentleman's revenge is never too late. Just you wait!
His face revealed neither joy nor sorrow. After giving a slight nod, he passed it over and looked toward the enormous lake behind the statues.
Seeing her son looking farther ahead, Qingyi smiled. "That is Sea God Lake!"
"The academy's Inner Court is located on Sea God Island in the center, along with the Golden Ancient Tree and Sea God Pavilion built around it."
"The academy's environment is pretty nice." Minghui forced a smile and offered a simple assessment.
"It certainly is." Qingyi nodded and took her son onward.
Before long, they arrived at a rectangular plaza. Behind it stood a series of tall buildings in different colors, mainly white, yellow, purple, and black. Minghui knew this well; they represented teaching buildings for different grades and school districts.
The white freshman teaching building stood at the southernmost end, closest to the lakeshore. Quite a few people had already gathered there.
"Ayi, go take care of your business first." Ming Chen suddenly spoke. "I can handle Hui'er's enrollment here."
"Alright." Qingyi nodded gently, released her son's hand, and headed directly behind the teaching building.
"Hui'er, let's go." Ming Chen smiled, took his son's hand, and led him toward the crowd waiting in line. They honestly joined the back of the queue.
Minghui did not grow impatient because of his status. He calmly observed the surroundings, occasionally asking his father a question.
Meanwhile, Qingyi soon arrived before the Freshman Dormitory Building and approached the old man reclining in a rattan chair.
"It's Qingyi." Sensing someone approach, the old man opened his eyes, a kind smile appearing on his face.
"Greetings, Old Dean." Qingyi bowed politely.
"No need for such formalities!" Mu En waved a hand lightly and smiled. "You little girl are always busy. You never come unless you need something. Tell me, what brings you to see this old man today? Don't tell me you came all this way just to visit me."
"Old Dean, Qingyi brought her son here to enroll today. Chen Ge came as well." Qingyi said with a smile.
"They should be lining up to register right now."
Mu En was immediately taken aback. This young couple had actually had a son at their age? How did they usually take care of themselves? He felt his disappointing disciple Yan Shaozhe desperately needed to learn from them!
What he wanted most now was to hold a child.
He immediately sat upright, his expression carrying a trace of reproach.
"You little girl, honestly. You brought the child here but didn't bring him to see this old man first, so I could meet him and let him get familiar with me!"
Though they were not Personal Disciples, he was still delighted to see students he had once taught finally fulfill their wishes and have children of their own. He was especially happy for Ming Chen. As the sole surviving bloodline of the previous generation of the Ming Family, this student of his had always carried a heavy burden.
Now, he could finally breathe easy.
"Old Dean, I came here first because there are some matters I wanted to discuss with you." Qingyi said politely.
Mu En frowned. "What matter could be more important than the child?"
"This matter concerns Minghui." Qingyi said, revealing her son's true name.
"Oh?" Mu En's expression relaxed, but then, as if recalling something, he frowned again. "Xiao Yi, don't tell me your child inherited the problem from Xiao Ming's family?"
Qingyi nodded gently. "But it has already been resolved."
"That's good." Mu En let out a breath of relief, then asked in confusion, "Xiao Yi, is there some other problem involved?"
In his view, the only thing that could bring the couple here together was a matter concerning their child.
"Old Dean, Hui'er has Twin Martial Souls." Qingyi said directly. "One of them is a Body Martial Soul."
Mu En froze, then asked tentatively, "The Personal Disciple Du Busi took in is your Hui'er?"
"Yes." Qingyi lowered her head and nodded, looking like a child who had done something wrong.
Mu En smiled and gently shook his head. "Xiao Yi, there's no need to act this way. Your teacher completely understands your difficulties. You and Xiao Ming had such a hard time having a child, and he is your only child. Naturally, you have to think more for his sake. What you did was for the child's good, and you did the right thing. If it were me, I would have done the same."
"Cultivating the Body Martial Soul first to build a foundation, then cultivating the Ultimate Ice Martial Soul—that truly is the best choice."
"When it comes to research into Body Martial Souls, this old man must admit that Shrek Academy is far inferior. That is simply the truth!
"Besides, the Body Sect has done quite a few good things for the continent over the years. It isn't some evil organization, so your teacher has no reason to oppose it. Come to think of it, if your child hadn't been Du Busi's disciple and happened to need Soul Rings, Du Busi might not even have been present when Lexuan and the others encountered danger in the Star Dou Great Forest. Even if he had been there, he might not have intervened to save them, much less gifted them Soul Rings."
"By that reckoning, this old man ought to thank your Hui'er on behalf of the academy."
"You jest, Old Dean. It was merely a fortunate coincidence." Qingyi said modestly.
"All things have cause and effect. It cannot be explained away as a mere fortunate coincidence." Mu En sighed.
"A favor is a favor. This old man isn't so old that I can't tell the difference."
At that, he smiled and took the initiative to change the subject.
"Xiao Yi, if I'm not mistaken, your child's other Martial Soul should be the Radiant Plume Divine Bow?"
"I heard from Xuan Zi that this Martial Soul also possesses the Wind Attribute. It must be a mutated Martial Soul, right?"
Qingyi raised her head and nodded gently. "An Azure Luan Beast Soul resides within it."
Mu En's eyes revealed surprise. "It actually exists in this manner. It is somewhat similar to the Evil-Breaking Dragon attached to the Coiling Dragon Staff Martial Soul."
"That should be the case." Qingyi replied. "I looked into it. My Azure Family did indeed intermarry with their family."
Though that had been over a thousand years ago.
"I see." Mu En nodded. "This is an exceptionally rare atavistic mutation."
"Old Dean," Qingyi continued immediately.
"Actually, there was another consideration when Chen Ge and I decided to send Hui'er to the Body Sect."
